(Version française en commentaire) The Plaque Découpée Universelle or Universal Stencil Plate was created by the engineer Jonathan A. David in 1876 and sold at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878, hence the French name. This lettering stencil was designed to draw all upper and lower case letters as well as all possible ornaments one can imagine using its numerous lines. I had the pleasure of discovering this item while reading the amazing book On Letters published by @domain______ , in which @prem_krishnamurthy discusses and examines On Kawara's lettering in his famous Date Painting series. Little is known about its creator, except that he probably lived in New York, where he patented the object almost 150 years ago. The scope of the project, shown in general public main events, suggests that it was made by someone who wasn't a type designer and therefore perhaps not in dialogue with the type world of his time. This may explain why it was long forgotten until Eric Kindel's 2007 article on how he came across it. I realised that it would be quite easy to cut copies with a laser and thought it would make an edition that graphic design enthusiasts would love. Then I thought that the object should be accompanied by some explanation. My solution was to reprint the original broadsheet with which it was sold, trying to recreate the entire typographic composition with today's means. The plates I cut out are made from cardboard scraps left over from previous projects, their sizes therefore depend on the pieces I come accross. Jonathan A. David, Plaque Découpée Universelle, 2023 (1876), 103 x 180 mm for the plate & 475 x 662 mm for the broadside Keaycolor 450g cardstock lasercut & digital newsprint, 200 copies. Website update Check the link in bio #72 — ARTZINES #16, Housewife Special, 2022, 21 x 29,7 cm, 32 pp. colour photocopy, 100 copies. – This 16th issue of ARTZINES is dedicated to the French zine Housewife created in Paris at the turn of the millennium by Axelle Le Dauphin and Dana Wyse for the cult lesbian club Le Pulp. I first met the artist Dana Wyse (p. 4-7) and was very intrigued by her art and wondered what kind of person could have created this hilarious body of work. But it is only years after I first interviewed her that she told me about the publication she made a long time ago. She introduced me to Axelle Le Dauphin and the three of us wondered if it should be considered as a zine, a fanzine or a magazine. (p. 8-16) Obviously, this kind of interogation ends up being even more confusing. But meeting the two creators together, can help to understand the kind of craziness that was at play in Housewife. In her brilliant article Housewife, La Redistribution du sensible (p. 24-31) translated as Housewife, Tongue in Chick (p. 18-23) by Amy Lay-Pelletier, Elisabeth Lebovici manages to retraces the series of event that led to the creation of Housewife, which forever changed the way lesbians are perceived in France. Website update Link in bio #70 — Katsushika Hokusai , La Manga #6, Paris, 2022, 14 x 20 cm, digital print, 56 pp., 100 copies. – This photocopied version of Hokusai’s Manga vol. 6 was made using an original 1876 edition directly on a copier during Copie Machine @ Shmorévaz, Paris. While the paper of the 19th century is so thin you can see through it, I pushed the contrast on the machine so the printing looks a lot more black and graphic than the original. Website update #69 — ARTZINES #15, Print It Yourself, Strasbourg/Nîmes, 2021/2022, 21 x 29,7 cm, First printoing: 12 pp. colour photocopy, 50 copies, Second printing: 24 pp. colour photocopy and Riso, 50 copies. Download / Télécharger – This issue shows an on-going research about projects present on line to be printed by the readers. The first version was published in an edition of 50 for Book Brutality curated by Emma Cozzani and Mathieu Tremblin at Syndicat Potentiel in Strasbourg in December 2021. Taking a candid shot at reinventing the outdated model of the art book or zine fair, Book Brutality invited mostly artists publishers who question the supposed dichotomy between IRL and URL, for workshops, discussions, exhibitions and talks; transforming the event into a lively moment of production and conviviality. The second version includes a 12 page web to print contribution created by the artist and cyberwitch Lucile Olympe Haute.

Website update Link in bio #68 — ARTZINES #14, Interviews, Paris, 2021, 21 x 29,7 cm, laser print, 218 pp., open edition. – This issue of ARTZINES was first imagined as a working document to help me put my thoughts in order. I gathered the transcripts of all the interviews done since 2015 in order to read them. As some people were interested in this blunt text only document, I started to print it on demand. This issue is destined to be forever a work in progress. It is different each time I print it because It depends on the advancement of my work. The printing and paper stock may also vary. Avec/With: AA BRONSON, PHIL AARONS, ARCHIV DER JUGEND KULTUREN, LISA ANNE AUERBACH, B&D PRESS, MAHIEDDINE BACHTARZI (LE GROS MONSIEUR), MICHAEL BAERS, ALEXANDRE BELLENGER (MY PRECIOUS TRASH), BLACK PAGES, PAKITO BOLINO (LE DERNIER CRI), PAM BUTLER, RICHARD CASTOR, MAITE CLAVEAU (TIJUANA), DAVID DE BACA about TEEN ANGELS, JULIE DOUCET, STEPHEN DUNCOMBE, SAMUEL ETIENNE, EXPERIMENTAL JETSET, MARC FISCHER, MARC FISCHER about BRUNO RICHARD, RYAN FOERSTER, AUDE FOUREST, JENNA FREEDMAN, GFELLER + HELLSGÅRD, MORITZ GRUNKE (GLORIA GLITZER), LUCILE OLYMPE HAUTE, MASANAO HIRAYAMA, Housewife Dana Wyse & Axelle Le Dauphin, fumiko imano イマノフミコ, KOTARO INOUE, CHRISTOPHER KARDAMBIKIS, DARIN KLEIN, PASCALINE J. Website update #64 – Livres Uniques / Unique Books antoine lefebvre editions, La Leçon, Paris, 2021, 21,8 x 49 cm, Charcoal, Lithography and collage on Vergé paper, 22 pp. _ I have always made unique books that felt more like experiments than finished objects. Since the pandemic and the absence of book fairs, I have been making more of them, repurposing never seen before lithographs into very pleasurable unique books. The books presented on this page are off-shoots of the project Absence Radicale.

Website update! Check the link in bio #10 bis — Robert Smithson, Monuments of Passaic (second and improved version), Paris, (1967) 2015, 16 pp., 14,5 x 21 cm, digital print on glossy paper, 100 copies. — I first created this booklet for another publication. It is a bilingual bootleg version of the famous piece Monuments of Passaic published by Robert Smithson in ArtForum in 1967. I used the original design of Artforum, but as the proportions of my A5 booklet are very different from the square format of the magazine, I decided to split the lay out between the pages. In the first version, the fonts were completely wrong. This is the second and improved version using the right fonts and the exact Artforum original layout in a reduced and different format. Everything is readable, the cut columns are full on the next page.
