3 posts
An Italian conductor of worldwide renown, Maestro Alessandro Siciliani most recently held responsibilities as Conductor Laureate with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. As music director of the orchestra from 1992 to 2004, Alessandro Siciliani guided the Ohio ensemble through performances that included a Carnegie Hall debut appearance in celebration of the Columbus Symphony’s 50th anniversary. Maestro Siciliani has been applauded by Ohio audiences for creating a repertoire of well-loved Italian opera pieces in the romantic symphonic tradition. One noteworthy performance in 2008 brought him back to Columbus’ Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in a benefit concert for the symphony’s musicians. Taking advantage of improved acoustics in the renovated theater, Siciliani directed heartfelt renditions of Dvorak's Symphony No. 4 and time-tested Italian opera overtures. As reported in the Columbus Dispatch, a highlight was the woodwind ensemble, with mellifluous flute-playing enhancing the opening section of the Dvorak piece. Alessandro Siciliani has been recognized with the Amerigo Vespucci Award, reserved for Italian conductors of international stature. Active as a symphony and chorus composer, he continues to make guest-conducting appearances in the United States and Europe.

Columbus Symphony Orchestra Displays Virtuosity at Carnegie Hall
Tumblr media
Maestro Alessandro Siciliani has had a storied career in classical music that included positions as conductor laureate and music director with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. One of Alessandro Siciliani’s crowning achievements with the Ohio orchestra centered on a debut at Carnegie Hall in 2000. A New York Times review of the performance lauded the opening, a vividly scored performance of Arrigo Boito's ‘’Mefistofele' Prologue, which brought together the combined forces of the Columbus Children's Chorus and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Chorus. The demanding piece was attacked with "confident virtuosity” by brass players, both onstage and in the overflow third balcony. At the same time, the blending of choral voices masterfully conveyed distinctions between alternating passages that feature penitent mortals and cherubim. At the center of this choral extravaganza was bass-baritone Stephen West, in the title role of the devil. Maestro Siciliani was also lauded for his interpretive reading of Brahms’ Second Symphony, with the performance providing a showcase for winds and strings. These sections demonstrated “warmth and solidity,” as they capably navigated shifts in tempo. The sold-out performance was bolstered by the presence of many of the orchestra’s long-standing supporters, who traveled from Columbus and provided standing ovations following each presented piece.
