I agree that I don’t think it glorified it. Especially after S1 where it showed how Hannah’s death affected her parents and how everyone around her was devastated and wracked with guilt. They will always be haunted by Hannah and how they didn’t do enough to save her. The families and friends of people who commit suic****never fully recover, and I think that it was important to show on television even if we agree the show is very flawed and problematic in other ways.

Exactly. The show is v flawed and I never said it wasn’t 😭😩it’s not perfect and there were times were it did seem to be the were glorifying being depressed. I understand everyone else’s argument too but I was saying in the most extreme case possible (which is like Hannah’s) it shows how deeply it can affect the ones you lvoe like Hannah’s family Clay, and how the entire school was changed by one simple action. The show was trying to portray to butterfly affect and albeit in the bad writing and a bad way and maybe the should’ve consulted with ppl who are suffering from these mental illnesses but I don’t think it meant to glorify it if it did.

I jumped around from topic to topic here so hopefully it makes sense but you seem like wanted to be nice in the begging and then in the tags you wanted to be rude. I don’t think you should just assume things about people. That could hurt people and you shouldn’t use it in a way of “I know how this goes and you don’t”. I’ve tried to kill myself multiple times so I think I asked a person with depression to defend the show.

I wasn’t using Justin as a way to defend the show the show has v many flaws v many things wrongs with I was using as an example for the butterfly affect that the show was trying to portray.

I have suffered from depression and anxiety for most of my life so maybe you shouldn’t put in the tags to not talk over the voices of the mentally ill because I’m one of them. In addition, Clay does end up getting help and they antagonized the school because the school did nothing in the first place. Hannah went and asked for help and to her it seemed like he did nothing. Children often don’t go to adult but rather confide in one another which is what this show could’ve portrayed if it had better writing. The school didn’t tell them they’d have a active shooting drill, the principal rlly only gave a shit abt the money the sports teams were making the school. So I could see the Avenue for them to put in the “a problem shared is a problem halved” narrative.

You’re taking my words and twisting them. I think Bryce didn’t become a better person and they shouldn’t have portrayed him in the show as becoming a better person because he didn’t deserve redemption arc. It wasn’t that Bryce heard the tapes and wanted to be better that was clearly not it, and he said it multiple times. That “no one will give him a second chance” and he thinks he deserves one because entitled.

You also got to remember that the people who are making this sad girl edits of Hannah could also be struggling too and using these edits as a form of coping. They could see themselves in Hannah, yes I understand the romanizing of depression, it is disgusting the way people think that ppl who have mental illness who can’t shower are gross I’ve been made fun of it on multiple occasions. I agree 100% that the way the show portrayed Hannah wasn’t the best.

I never applied or said that suicide was logical and right option because it isn’t. I understand how confusing and how painful it may be when you’re suicidal. And I never applied “logical” reasoning to Hannah wanting to kill herself, you continue to say “you gotta understand” I know what it is and I know I felt when I wanted to and I understand how friends felt they did too. And I’m reiterating stop assuming things abt people you don’t know.

And finally, everyone responds the show in different ways. I’ve watched the show at one of the lowest points in my life and it didn’t affect me the way it did you because everyone is a different person.

I’ve been rewatching 13rw and something I really noticed was the argument of “13rw glorifies suicide” could really only be used if it stopped at the first season. although it didn’t. and we got to see just how one persons suicide can cause a ripple effect or the butterfly effect (bc thats literally what the show is about).

I’ll start with Justin- now if Justin never let Bryce send out the original photo of Hannah in the first place. Justin’s death wouldn’t have occurred or would’ve occurred later (still due to having AIDS). See, if Hannah didn’t end up killing herself I don’t think Justin would’ve ever ran away, or would’ve ran away later due to Jessica finding out on her own.

So what I’m sayin is: I don’t believe 13rw has ever glorified suicide. I think the show takes you through the lives of people who were effected due to their own actions in Hannah’s life and how they evidently helped end it. It shows it’s viewers what the most extreme of cases could happen if you were to kill yourself. It would cause far more hurt than good. Because sure yeah Bryce is dead but at what cost?
