Final Photobook
Tumblr media
Reflecting on my photography work this semester, I can see how I have grown in my portrait photography. Coming into this semester it felt very confronting to take portraits as I am much more experienced and am more comfortable with landscapes. As I got better throughout the weeks, I started enjoying it. I had fun photographing my three friends for this project. I photographed Imogen, and Ella on my trip to Christchurch and my friend Nicole from AUT. If I had the opportunity to spend more time on this project, I would take photos of all three of them for the ending of the book. I would also like to spend more time in the photography studio and gain more experience with using artificial lighting as this did not fit theme of this project.

Week 12 - Feedback
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feedback:
Move writing to be the last page. Is the blue pages necesssary?
Personal Reflection:
Each image needs to be edited, centred to the page.
The second to last image is not necessary.
The blue pages distract from the photos and should be removed and the last 2 images could be larger.
I also add acknowledgments and short summary about the assignment to the last page.

Book Cover
I felt like the read did not suit the colours in my photographs and as i used a blue light for two of my images i thought that it would look best.

Auckland Library - Looking at photo books
Getting some inspiration on how to layout my photo book and how to make the layout more interesting.
I like how this book has large images and how the fold actually helps frame the image.

Week 10 Contact Sheet Ella
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started this photoshoot with my inspiration from my mood board. I played around with different lighting, props, angles, and Ella’s poses. I used stationary as a prop in Ella’s hair to represent her academic ambitions. I also used a glass as a prop to create distortion and convey confusion, fear. I shot movements with a low shutter speed to create distortion to convey the feeling of being lost and feeling like you’re not enough. I also wanted to take photos of Ella doing her normal everyday tasks including studying and doing her makeup. As there is mundane in the everyday tasks. I used a shower curtain as my backdrop to defuse the natural light and I used a make shift light reflector (baking tray with tinfoil) to help minimise the shadows on Ella’s face.

Week 10 Contact Sheet
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With this photoshoot i just wanted to have fun. I saw a nice spot to take photos across from where we were getting breakfast. I thought that ending my photo book on a happy image of two friends would be a good idea. I asked Ella and Imogen to look at each other and laugh make them feel so awkward the really did laugh. I also wanted to get some images of them walking away to symbolising the end of the narrative that i am trying to portray. The natural lighting conditions from the morning sun was very nice it wasn't too harsh or too little. It was a good time of day to take these photos.

Week 10 Contact Sheet Imogen
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the begging of this photoshoot i did not have a clear plan as i was visiting Christchurch and did not have any set locations in mind me and Imogen just walked around the city.
I started by taking some images at the cafe we where getting lunch at but i fount that the natural light was creating too harsher shadows.
Once we started walking around I took photos of Imogen behind any interesting backdrop including the graffiti, plant and city scape.
when taking photos in front of the city scape I wanted to use bokeh to show the disconnection of the place to my subject as the narrative i am trying to tell is a teenage girl moving far away from here family and home town. I also wanted to frame the image using the traffic light and use the road as a leading line into the scene.
I then wanted to show distortion and movement by taking an image using a low shutter and have my subject still while having people moving looking distorted in the background. Unfortunately i could not find a populated area to be able to take an image like that so i improvised and took photos of Imogen beside moving car to still be able to movement and distortion.
I then wanted to take photos inside of Imogen's room I wanted to take images that convey sadness to show the turbulence of emotions of teenagers and the ups and downs of life. to do this i limited the amount of light coming into the room and used a light reflector to bounce the limited amount of light back onto the face and to also minimised harsh shadows. Along with this i Instructed Imogen on how to pose and showed her reference images that I was taking inspiration from. While doing this i also tested out using a coloured blue light to inherence the feeling of sadness.
I wanted to use her room because it is a reflection of yourself it is a very personal space that is your own and it feel very intimate to see it and creates a connection with the viewer it is more intriguing.
I then wanted to try take some more portraits of Imogen. I used a shower curtain to try and diffuse the light coming from her window. I also wanted to covey feelings of anxiety using movement, so I used my tripod and set my camera to a low shutter speed but I found it hard getting the iso correct as the window was letting too much light in and I was not sure what moments Imogen should do to make it too distorted. This images did not come out how I had imagined but i want to try again when I take my images of Ella.
I also wanted to try use a glass of water as a prop to show the perception of self identify and how unclear it is at a young age.

Week 11 Contact Sheet Nicole
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this photoshoot I wanted to get some images of Nicole studying and I wanted them to feel more natural. So I asked her to pretend to study and just move around. I focused on trying different angles and framing the composition.
I also wanted to try something abstract and see what it would look like if Nicole posed with the book covering her face. It was awkward for Nicole to pose like this and i felt like it did not match the narrative i am trying to tell.

Justine Kurland
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Justine Kurland series called Girl Pictures (1997–2002).
Justine wanted to depict teenage girls as if they had run away and started their own community. she used props to help set the scene to tell the story. The way that she shows a wider view helps set the scene and makes the viewers have to dive deeper and investigate the photos.
To help tell the narrative of my story throughout the photo book having some images with a wider view will help set the scene, show more detail.

Amelie Sachs - Portraits
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amelie Sachs portrait photography style resonates with me as she uses high contrast and bokeh to add interest and grab the attention of the viewer I also like the composition of these images having some negative space frame the subject.
I want to explore using high contrast and bokeh in my own photographs

Using Bokeh - Sergio Heads
Nelson, Steph. 2021. "40 Beautiful Examples of Bokeh Photography." The Photo Argus, October 9, 2021. https://www.thephotoargus.com/40-beautiful-examples-of-bokeh-photography/.
Bokeh could work well in my portraits as it will help to miniamizes distractions, and gain the views attention. Using bokeh could also help to make the background of my images more interesting. I would still want to use a range of different techniques as well as bokeh to be able to establish the environment and setting. Using Bokeh could help me visual show the feeling of isolation and the unknown as the viewers have no where else to look besides the subject.
Sergio Head is an 18yr old photographer and she uses bokeh very successfully in her portraits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top two images resinate more with my theme and concepts. The way that Sergio uses Bokeh to add interest to an urban environment is very cleaver. She shows a subject that doesn't want to be looked at as the focal point in the image which is very commanding to the viewer and very powerful.
