Midterm Artist Statement
I would say that my self portrait is a reflection of things that make me happy or reflect my personality. The pose I chose represents my passion for visual arts it’s always be a part of my everyday life. Hence why I chose a painting to be in my hand. I also decided to add my bird into the picture to symbolize my major in psychology. The bird was gifted to me but another family. For some reason the bird pulls out its feathers from stress. I’ve been treating the bird from day 1. I wanted that to represent the helping hand that I would give to anyone who needs it. Finally for the clothing I chose something I would usually wear at home because that’s where I would spend most of my time. In something comfortable working on another drawing. I’ve been working on my self portrait for a week and dedicated 3-5 hours everyday to work on it. In total I spent 35 hours on this portrait. I’m more than thrilled at how my portrait looks because I feel as though it finally represents my confidence about myself as a person.

Final 2 Paintings

Final Assignment Artist Statement
The first of my paintings I incorporated a museum setting with paintings hanging on both walls. The first painting is inspired by my visit to the Lowe’s Museum on the campus of the University of Miami. I added my take on “ The Starry Night Painting” as a tribute because when I visited the Lowe’s Museum, it was mostly historic Works. Not very old but works from the 1800’s. The second I wanted to be outside and during the sunset to capture different lighting. For the second painting, I used a couple of the poses from class and transformed them to look and do things in a different angle. I incorporated clothing that represents modern fashion and different styles others like to wear now. This was a challenge assignment because acrylic paints dry very quickly. I had to remake colors often and couldn’t blend colors together if I waited to long. I’ve been working on these pieces since Monday 04/14/2025 I would give myself 4-5hours to work on the piece everyday. So far I have been working on both pieces for about 30 hours in total for a week. I would have liked to try other poses and backgrounds. I definitely did enjoy how my paintings are progressing. I hope to learn how to handle acrylic paints better in the future.
Final Portfolio Statement
A) My favorite materials and why?
My favorite materials to work with were the graphite pencils. The reason why I choose the graphite pencils is because it’s something I’ve always been comfortable working with. I’ve been learning how to do the gray scale since middle school so getting to work with that again after high school was pretty fun.
B) My favorite assignment.
My favorite assignment was the midterm self portrait. While doing the self portrait, I found another self portrait I did in middle school. It was very nostalgic, looking at my self portrait from middle school and brought awareness to my developments or my progress when it comes to my skills with art.
C) Obstacles that I have experience, this semester learning wise.
The biggest obstacle for me was the three figures using one point perspective and using acrylic paints. Before this class, I have never used more than one figure in a painting. It was very challenging, but fun. also, before this class, I would’ve never thought about where I would put other figure. However, the more I did this particular assignment I started to realize how easy it was just to incorporate two more figures. Using acrylic paint was never easy for me whenever I did a painting in high school using acrylics I never really liked how the painting came out. So whenever I do use acrylics, I only used it for backgrounds or still lives, but never to add a figure. But think of this class and a couple of videos I’ve watched online. I feel like I was able to somewhat get a grasp on acrylics.
D) How was I able to overcome this obstacle.
In terms of acrylic paint, I watched a couple of YouTube videos and looked at a couple of paintings that I saw in the museum. For incorporating more figures it was really the amount of stress that I want to make each of them look similar or like. Do it in one point perspective was beneficial because making a figure smaller with less details isn’t terrible . The drawing still looked like the model just with less detail. Once I realized and figured out these things, it was easier to continue on with the assignment.
