In this life there are three types of people. The leaf person, the branch person and the root person. The leaf person is the person who leaves you when the wind blows hard, the branch person is the person who breaks when things get tough and the root people are those who hold you up when things go wrong... They stay with you no matter what happens... Come what may... Make sure to keep those people close to you, because they are the ones who matter, they are the ones who feed you... They are the ones who make you better, they are the ones who revive you when everything dies.

Honestly, I thought this was super cute. I am sure there are plenty of Austenland fans like me who have been eager for more stories of modern Austen readers finding love, and this little Hallmark film delivers! Despite the title, Paging Mr. Darcy is perhaps a bit more Sense and Sensibility than Pride and Prejudice, as our stoic leading lady dearly loves but often clashes with a sister who wears her heart on her sleeve. One could argue that there's quite a bit of Emma in the extent to which she meddles in that sister's love life. Will Kemp's leading man is a ball of joy and charm (more Tilney than Darcy), and our heroine greatly admires and bonds with his aunt in a way that reminded me of Anne Elliot and Mrs. Croft. As in Mansfield Park, there's a theatrical. Overall, it's a fun mash-up of Austen-y stuff.
I'd happily watch a sequel about their friend Kelsey the costume designer. Here's hoping Hallmark commissions Reina Hardy to write more.
(For anyone who has Peacock, it will probably be available there for another day or two. Hallmark seems to keep their new stuff up for about 4 days.)

In this film, Alison Sweeney plays a copywriter who for some reason has been tasked with coming up with an entire ad campaign for a bookstore run by a tech bro (but... like... a nice one?). She's recently single, and the ghost of Jane Austen turns up in her apartment to help her navigate these transitions. Oh, and of course she's also a closet novelist.
A swing and a miss, I'm afraid.
The romance was pretty soul-less, probably because the male lead had no depth or arc. At some point the heroine yells at him something to the effect of "who even are you?!?" and we never really get an answer to that question. Jane Austen's ghost is under-used, as she mostly just chastises Sweeney's character for pouring tea incorrectly. We don't get to see her meaningfully engage with modern womanhood. On the plus side, I did get pretty invested in the subplot (her best-friend's love story), and I could have used more scenes from that plot line.
As far as the Jane of it all goes: there were a lot of Austen quotes and a charming fan club, but also some weird choices, like Austen-esque names given seemingly randomly to characters. (Most notably: the protagonist is "Lily Thorpe").
