Current Research!
Research (theatre companies with videos)
Our topic what we will base our movement piece on.
World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The vast majority of the world's countries”including all the great powers”eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.

We watched this piece of movement and I got a few senses of ideas of what the story could have been. At first I got the impression that she was over protective of herself shown by how her moves where sexual but tense and how only some things were different as there were some insecurities. Then I got the impression of mental emotions from how aggressive some of her movements where within the piece but how sometimes it could be very fast pace but then suddenly slow down. I also got impressions of confusion as sometimes it was like people where lost within their imagination and where out from what was happening.

Watched this piece of physical theatre to look at research towards of piece of movement for our topic WORLD WAR II. I wanted to notice how movement and physical theatre links together and within movement and stamina and agility and team work link towards how physical theatre and movement are and how stories in physical theatre you are able to speak/ interact within scenes but with movement you tell a story without speaking. I feel like comparing these helped with the understanding on how movement can tell us the story we want to portray and use things in clever ways.

Pantomime
Week 1 - We read our scripts and started to look into the characters. We read the script giving use an understanding of the performance. We spent time talking about the script and characters understanding what the play was about, when it was set and what the meaning of the different scenes where. We then re read the script starting to give out characters. I choose most of john’s lines as I suited the character as I learned he was nerdy. I picked john’s lines and played it as myself but with john’s characteristics. Next we looked at research on the films set in the script. One was a Christmas carol. I knew about this film but looked up details as then I could use the type of setting and location during the scene. We also looked at it’s a wonderful life as a lot of people hadn’t watched it and if we didn't understand it how where they expected too. We all as a group spoke about what to cut from the script meaning we decided to adapt the script to our location and audience. After all this We started setting the first scene as we knew it would be a Christmas carol. We kept it so it would be a mess up after people wouldn't want to do it. This scene needed to be set in Victorian London. We then went onto another scene, this was a repeat of wanting to do a Christmas carol but we all add ideas and want something different.
Week 2 - A the start of week 2 we continued finishing work setting scene 2, this continued with the disagreement scene where we made sure to adapt it the current and known movies. We made this scene funny by adding jokes to diehard as people debate it being a Christmas film. After working on this we did  a re-run of what we had so far making sure it worked and felt like a panto while learning our lines. We then discussed the scenes we had cut as we was going to keep the Australia scene and the Gustav the green nose reingoat scenes but changed the parade as it was an American thing and changed it so it was the St Helen’s Christmas light switch on. We did this as we wanted to make sure it adapted to our audience. After all this we did our first full on script run of act one so we could see how it looked and made sure it all worked as a act one and so we could make improvement's. After we worked on the script we made a prop list with any props we would need for the panto and for our characters giving us jobs to get things. We then looked over all lines making sure we had gave out all the lines.
Week 3 - We started off the week finishing act one after we made sure we had added and linked the St Helen's switch on and added the shark idea to the Australian scene. We made sure to write a clothing list so we knew what we needed for our characters' and we also did repeat runs of act one during Monday and Tuesday taking notes so we could improve scenes and making it the best we could. We also started work on the dances for the finale, we spent Tuesday afternoon just working on our dances what replaced the Christmas carols with Christmas music and added dancing. After we spent time on doing our runs of act one we started on act 2, at this time we hadn.t cut it and it was focused on a Christmas carol and went into a wonderful life within the same story. This was all looking bad as no one had learned lines for act two and we had only learned act one and could be noticed instantly that people hadn’t watched a wonderful life and so we was told to cut act two and create a devised piece. We constantly tried different idea’s but they just didn't seem to work as we was going to do stuff line home alone and die hard and polar express but every idea we tried just didn't work and looked bad.
We once again did a full act one run as we had made act one look good as we wanted to make sure everyone knew there lines and that it all had been done correctly. Next we continued work on act two as we still didn’t have a idea, we continued discussing our idea’s and trying to add them in. Still things didn’t seem to work until decided to plan using our idea’s we had created what would include things from our drafts of scenes including the nativity story, the polar express and the three ghosts and repeating of act one scene one but scrooge realising that his ways would need to change. We decided to add a job centre scene after the nativity and second polar express scene. We then linked it all together making act 2 functional.
Week 4 - On our final week we did some extra edits to act two as it still needed work so it could be funny as it didn’t feel like it was funny so we worked to make sure it was good enough so people could understand what was happening, after we worked on making sure act two was good and worked as a piece we then just spent the rest of the time doing full runs of act one and two together repeating this with notes so we could keep making improvement’ s so it would look good. We also made sure we had full costume and props for the performance and finished working on the dance so we could practice with the dances included. After this we was then ready to perform after doing a run in the theatre and lighting tech.
Evaluation -  Overall I feel like I portrayed my character well as I shown my nerdy style of character throughout, I enjoyed playing the character as I was able to use comedy while still being nerdy. One fun moment was during the second scene where we was talking about Christmas films as I was able to add comedic lines what made the moment a lot better, also I felt like my character worked in the scene as I was able to use my character in a way where I was able to agree and disagree with things like it was normal. In act one I felt like my character was shown as nerdy and can has sarcasm, it was like he would always just give inputs and likes to be right about everything but isn’t. Also I feel like he gets depending on by the rest of the group. I liked how I played my character in act one. I'm Act two I felt like the more weirder side of him came out as I randomly became a donkey for the nativity scene. This was funny as you had only seen my character as nerdy then randomly he comes donkey’s and Santa. Also I felt like my character was funniest in act one. Another thing I felt was good was how I changed from nerdy to weird within scenes. The best part of my character was how I could be funny but nerdy at the same time. Overall I feel like my best bit was during scene two when I was talking about films and stuff. But I feel like a way to improve was to clock the audience a lot more and linking more towards them as I needed more audinace interaction and should of acted more important during act 2. I felt like I did good in the performance as I managed to show my characters nerdy side and I also feel like I shown skill with how I acted with the audience. One thing I was disappointed in was how I messed up on lines but I liked how I managed to make it work with lines I added for it to make sense still.

Fear Feedback
Solid ideas, I liked the use of the music to create a disjunctive feel in the dentist scenes. The idea of image and sound being in opposition creates an unease and it was used to full effect at the start and end of your piece. Some of the performances were a little comical at times, but this is due to the fact that you didn't have help from tutors to focus the performances. The violence was a little too tame to invoke a response from the audience and could have been enhanced with clever lighting and a more affecting soundscape. Remember its what we don't see that awakens our imagination and therein is where the fear lies. You had obviously thought about the theme and you were the only group to demonstrate a clear and coherent response to the stimulus. I liked the use of physicality when you stood in a line downstage and used your arms to create the image of some kind of crooked insect, it reminded me of Steven Breakoffs Metamorphosis! Had tutors been allowed to help facilitate and direct in the rehearsal room this would have been by far the strongest piece. Well done.
A piece full of theatrical devices and the most ideas seen in a piece today. The flashing lights, emphasised facial expressions and sound effects to create the fairground scene was imaginative and playful. Alex shouldn't have moved about so much, stillness is very effective in tense scenes. Using music that is in opposition to the themes/atmosphere of the scene is higher level thinking and theatre making, continue to explore this concept in your devising. Niamh it was nice to see you have a go at being a lighting technician/designer.
Evaluation
I feel like we portrayed fear well as we made realistic tension and realistic themes And did fear well.

Identity Evaluation
We watched over our whole performance, writing down notes for what we thought we did good and what we did bad during the performance.
I felt like after watching the performance the positioning of the first movement scene was off, I felt like we should have looked for staggered, so we could have our lights positioned a lot nicer. I felt like it did tell what was to come but I also feel we could have had something else there to make it clearer to the audience. The next scene was the college scene, this is where we show of the three groups. The bully's, The Same Sex, The Outcasts. I feel like just how we separated these groups helped show identity. So, during this scene it started with both girls talking, Then I come walking in. I instantly shown my character as a shy and how he was a pushover. This was shown from the lines “Hi Alex, Bye Alex” as during them lines I was looking scared as the one of the bullies where speaking to me. Then It was shown after I told the rest of my group, I was having a gaff then I got shouted over. I felt like this was funny at the same time as when I got shouted over, I answered their questions but then jumped when I grabbed me. I also made it so when I was answering the questions I was stumbling as I feared them.
Next was the smaller scenes, I felt like the scenes what was showing sexuality worked well as it was showing how they wanted to fit in, but society wouldn’t let them and how one wasn’t bothered about what people thought but then the over is wanting to be able to look like they were a good part of society. The scene I felt lacked a bit was the bully scene as it was liked it was being dragged on and they were delaying replies to each other. It was like they wanted to scene to be longer than it needed to be because the only message we were sending here was that they were going to use the same sex relationship to mess with and take advantage over. After this was the Other Same sex scene what was showing a strong message of identity because how one was saying I don’t care what people think and how they were going to use us, but the other girl was saying how they won’t use us they are letting us fit in and how they were trying to be there friend.
After the smaller scenes we had the party scene, this was our main scene what was showing off the groups, sexuality and mental health. This scene is where the main plot happens where one of the girls gets spiked and the bully’s take advantage by taking pictures of her while she kisses another lad as they trick her into doing it what linked to peer pressure. I felt like I also played my character well in this as I needed to be drunk so during the whole scene, I was dancing drunk not noticing anything happening. I managed to make the audience laugh during this as while all serious stuff was happening, I was just dancing. Next was the social media aftermath of all the party, this scene shown social media well as we used our phone lights as our phone screens. This told how we all felt after the party using repeated words and soundscape’s we shown how we all felt and how it affected us all including the girl’s relationship.
Finally, it was the ending movement piece where we show the aftermath of everything and it affected Niambh and how it all ended badly because of it all and how we all realized what happened.
Overall, I felt like this was a great pierce showing identity, but I felt like we could have had scenes to improve rparts. I liked how we managed to make it still work even though props where missing and people where not reacting during scenes.
We represented the idea of identity through sexuality, social media, Mental health and peer pleasure.
I felt like we gave a clear understanding of the theme of identity and how it affects, and it shown in different ways.
One thing I felt could have been improved after watching it back was the first movement scene as there was times where we did nothing, and it was total darkness.
We could have implemented more improvements to the first movement scene by making it so instead of darkness until the music picked up, we could have made it, so we show what we were going to use as a drug.
One idea I could have included to improve the piece was we could have had another scene with the outcasts to show how they felt about the whole issue and how it affected us, so for example after I was recorded dancing drunk. Did someone see that who wasn’t meant too. Also, what did the others think about what happened that night

Project one
Overall i felt like i did well in the performance, my role in the performance was helping directing and set all the lighting using touches. The aim was to create loads of nice images on the walls while also using the idea how the memories where in the light.

Identity is who you are, Who people think you are and how you look at yourself compared to how people look at you. And how you can change and be different.

We was asked as a group to discuss what we thought identity was and what types of identity that link into society.
We all gave idea’s as a group what was going to be used next lesson.
I gave the idea of pretending to be someone else and how people could be pressured into changing through social media, i also mentioned about fake id and how people act different ages to do things or impress people.
I also mentioned about about living a different life linking back to how people change on social media.

Unit 1 + 2
Collaborative Performance
Week one
Monday During our first lesson we played some games, including bang and zombie, the main reason we played these games where to test our reactions, concentration and awareness. This is important to any actor as things may happen on stage what might not be expected and you need to adapt and work with whatever happens on stage and work as a team.
We then was placed into two groups where we was given a scenario and nothing else but then needed to create a still image using this, We also was made in our groups to be given a word and scenario and needed to create it into a short scene. These tasks where given to us to test to see if with minimal information we could get people to understand the setting and a key focus word.
These activities continued after the break and we Learned about how team work and information was important, a lot of this lesson was getting us used to working as a class and learning how key information, reactions and awareness is important to an actor. We then did facial expressions and team building exercises to get used to all working as a group, While also getting us to grips with devising.
Tuesday - we played zombie and a clapping game, this clapping activity was testing us to clap to someone while they clap at the same time while trying to clap at the same time without a delay. This required a lot of focus so we knew when the person next to us was going to clap. We then was told to all stand in our own space and do everyday activities with actions and no sounds, we was given tasks like going to buy some shoe’s and making a bed. This was done to show we can do things without sound. We continued to repeat the circle activities inducing bang, and zip zap zoom this was a lot of thinking and communication. we continued these activities throughout the day. After we played these activity’s what got us to focus on reaction time and cast awareness we was then given the key focus word on what we needed to create a performance on this word was “Identity” We was asked as a full class to write and explain as a group what we thought identity was and how its in today's society.
Thursday
First we was given our assignment brief what we read though to see when and what was expected in the performance still highlighting the word  “Identity” as we needed to use reference from identity in the whole piece in different ways.
We spoke a lot about identity, mentioning a lot of things like types of it including Racism and social and peer pleasure. We gave examples or each and went into a lot of detail. So about how it affects people and society and real like problems.
We was also recommended to watch the circle as it is covered around identity. We continued to speak about these until our final lesson.
We put these identity words into still images then we spoke as a group to discuss and then we these images into a small performance to see if we could create this into a story.
We continued to play focus games and work to create different still images. We kept creating pieces around different words to help us use a creative imagination.
Week two
Monday
We started off by doing a walking exercise to warm us up and to get us to think, we needed to walk neutral but then listen to what we are told to do. This activity was done to get us to focus and listen after this we played a few games of zombie and one game of bang, although we was no good at it. Then we shown off what we did with josh on the Thursday, We shown them off so we could understand what we needed to start off like. We started by setting the canteen scene what was originally planned as the park scene, This was changed as we knew it wouldn’t make sense in a park but in a canteen it would. We made it so we would have, a group of friends and the two female’s who are in a relationship for the story. Most of the lesson was us just setting this scene so we would have the friends making fun of the girls and acting like them being together was wrong. We liked this idea and decided to keep it adding lines what we would all say to give our characters roles. My character was someone who was shy and tried to fit in. This was proven by the line “I’m 18 I Will buy the drinks” But they turn this down. We also decided we would have it so one of the girl;s would be tripped over and we would all laugh to show how we didn’t agree with them being in a relationship.
We continued after break to fix and make the scene look better. Including being given notes on the scene, I was told i need to make my character seem more shy and pushed over as i wasn’t portraying it as well as i needed.
Tuesday
We started off this lesson by doing some breathing and facial warm up, this was done as its important we are able to do things for ages without being tired. After this we did a game of bang and zombie before getting our Identity notes to decide where we would go to next.We decided to start the party scene where the plan was we would be in a party and i would be so drunk i would give a drink to one of the girl’s making it look like i drugged as i was drunk i wouldn’t remember. We started to set up the scene so the whole time i’m just drunk in the kitchen and that;s where we decided that the girl’s would get into an argument and fall out ended up only one of them are at the party, We added this all in the make it make sense. We continued to make up the story into this scene so all the future scenario’s would happen.
We started to run over the whole thing including the canteen scene to see if it looked good. We then was given notes on how to improve and i was told i needed to act more drunk so during the next set of rehearsals during the lesson i listened to what i was told and tried to improve.
Thursday
At the start of the lesson we got straight into showing what we had done Monday and Tuesday, Andy immediately had area’s of improvement and Idea’s. He asked us for the canteen scene to put us into groups so it would be the girl’s, the four friends and the three bully’s. This looked already a lot better as we could see the different classes of power and how we wasn’t all just a bunch of friends. He also decided to show my character more by asking me walk in but then i get stopped by the bullies. This made a funny moment as its just a Hi and Bye, that’s it. We also added it so Sean would shout that i had a gaff making the bullies hear it and then they decide to come. After this we as a group shown the smaller scenes what i wasn’t in where is gave them feedback and helped them to improve them as they told the story of whats going to happen.
He then started work on the party scene where the focus needed to be on the bullies so we decided that we needed to have it so the bullies controlled all the friend group and made them do things for them. What would lead to the drugged scenario.
We first did some warm ups to help us be warmed up and ready for the lesson and played a game of Lasers, this is where we needed to stand in two’s and create lasers with our eyes. We did this is test how we can think and work our way around situations. After this we shown what we had done throughout Monday and Tuesday and what we did previous with Andy. Josh liked the improvements and give us some feedback from us showing it to help us improve the scenes. One of these where to make bigger reaction when Sean says “Whats a gaff” This was expected to have a comedic effect. So with this in mind we repeated this line until we could get it right. He also worked on making the smaller scene’s and the party scene seem more natural and not like we was all forced into a party. So with all bits of information we improved the scenes.
After working on all this josh wanted us to add movement so he split us into groups and got us the recreate the party scene and the ending scene what this whole piece would lead too. He gave us tasks to create the movement on so we would all need to link to social media on our phones and then move around creating scenes from the play. We spent a lot of time working on these where then we shown them off. Josh liked these movement pieces and decided we should use them. As a group we decided the party movement should start the whole performance and the aftermath of it all should end it. We then re performed the whole performance using all the advise we was given and the new movement pieces.
Week 3
Monday
We started off Monday’s lesson playing bang and zombie’s this was to see if we have improved reactions and communication. During zombies we all noticed that we was still unfocused during zombie’s and never seemed to be able to keep it going. We then played bang where i had noticed i was starting to improve and so was the rest of the class.
We then continued to do some body/focus warm ups where we walk around the room and listen to instructions. We did this for a bit to warm us up and get us all focused.
During the rest of the lesson we continued to rehearse “identity” We had finished the piece and now was just running scenes and making them the best we could. We worked on the light/movement scenes what we did with josh as we wanted to make it look a lot better and work within the piece. We did more work on the college scene as we wanted to make this scene look a lot cleaner than what it did. We changed positioning and then made sure timing was working through transitions. During this we kept getting advise and notes on how we could improve. For example i was told that i needed to speak louder so i can be heard and act more scared. We worked on the college and party scenes to make sure they all worked with transitions. As today was proven this week we was going to be working on just fixing the piece and making sure all scenes and transitions worked throughout the whole thing.
Tuesday
We spend the whole day doing runs of our piece and getting notes on how to improve our characters and improve and change the scenes. We worked in the morning a lot on our movement scene transitions to the college scene this was to make sure timing was perfect and we could transition into the college scene without any delays, we re did this transition a few times until it was right.
We continued running through scenes including all the transitions making sure they worked and didn’t look stupid. We spend this whole day working on all the scenes mainly focusing on transmissions and how we played our roles during the scenes.
Thursday
With Andy during our lessons he was focusing on the performance as a whole. He worked with us on our scenes a lot more helping us to be able to use our characters more in the scene, he watched over ever scene we had and worked with us on how we could show our characters more and he gave us all tips on how to improve, like i was told during the party scene i needed to seem more drunk and how i was just enjoying myself. Throughout his lesson he was stopping the scenes to tell us how to improve, We took is notes to mind and added in the improvement including at the college scene we made it so when i say “Right listen up” We turn around and whisper so we can hear the other part of the scene going on. He also asked us make talk louder during the scenes and make sure to talk a lot louder during the party scene. We finished making sure the party scene was done and worked and then added the phone social media scene and the final movement scene.
Week 4
Monday
We started off this lesson playing zombie, This was the best game of zombie we managed to play as we kept the game going for quite a bit and we did our longest game of this we had done. We also did a breathing exercise to calm everyone down and get us ready to rehearse as we knew this was our final week. All we needed to do this week was clean up some of the performance and keep rehearsing like its our final performance. We spend a lot of the lesson repeating scenes to make sure we could make them as good as possible with notes given from Stevie. I felt like i needed to still seem a lot more scared during the college scene so i kept that in mind during the rest of the day run through’s.
Tuesday
During this set of lesson we continued like yesterday going full run though’s of our performance while giving notes to improve. One thing we needed to make sure we had improved. We worked on all the scenes once again making sure we listened to what we was told on Monday and changed the movement scene to fit this.
We had made the lighting look better from when Andy helped us with it last Thursday and made sure to use it correctly and do it on time. what wasn’t going so well at the very ending part.
Thursday
We started off by showing all of our improvements throughout the week to Andy, where he then gave us tips to improve and make it look better. For example he told me to act like i was having more fun at the party instead of just dancing the whole time. He also gave us improvements for the rest of the college scene and the smaller scenes. He mentioned and made sure the timing of some lines where said correctly.
We then started to re run the piece with the new improvements and even i knew these improvements made it look and feel a lot better as people knew there Que’s a lot easier.
With josh we started off with some cardio warm up get us a bit more energised and to keep people functioning during the whole performance.
After all the warm up’s josh wanted to see the piece as we was performing next week show we shown him. After he seen it he made us show him some scenes again as he wanted timing and stage exits to look a lot nicer. He asked me and Jordan during the college scene to stand at the front and when he grabs me and jump to show how i’m scared. He also help with other people’s characters including adding Nicole into the piece as she had joined onto our group so he fitted her in as one of the nerdy group who the bully’s scare. We carried on going through scenes making sure all our transitions looked neat and wasn’t a mess. This took time as we needed to repeat scenes as we kept trying different things.
This was the last time we had josh and Andy before the performance on Tuesday.
Week 5
Monday
We started off by doing a breathing some breathing exercises what was going to help us focus for the day ahead and also to concentrate and help us control our breathing while doing things on stage. We then continued to rehearse identity putting our focus on not stopping and timing the performance, we continued this all day but in between we needed to do fixes to the party scene and then fix the timing on our movement pieces as timing is key for the movement pieces.
We also like last week made sure that transitions worked as they should we was doing it fast enough.
Tuesday
Just like yesterday we starting with breathing exercises and re done the walking exercise as we needed to be focused and have containerisation today as we was performing. We did our final run though’s and edits what where needed and made sure it was still correct timing. One of the fixes was the first movement scene as the foot timing for the lights where not right, so we fixed it and made sure it worked. We also made sure the final movement scene was timed with the lights as we didn’t know our Que. We did our final class rehearsal of identity using all our energy and was ready for the performance.
Then it was our performance!
