the worst part about growing up is not being forced into such a cruel world. it is not the never ending unknown you’re leaping into, unsure of where to go. it is not the vulnerability of being truly alone and unprotected. it is seeing all the characters you looked up to when you were a child, and realizing that you’re now older than them. these people who were your closest friends and confidantes who once you looked to them for guidance and an example. they showed you that you too can do great things. they were golden and immaculate, they knew everything. they could do nothing wrong and made no mistakes. then suddenly, they were your peers. you saw them as you saw the kids you went to school with, and still learned from them. you saw how they spoke and acted, and drew from that to form your own way of speaking and acting. you saw their mistakes clearer now, but saw their triumphs above everything else and vowed that you could do it as well. they comforted you through long nights and lonely afternoons. they could be there whenever you needed them, and they were. they comforted you and spoke to you as no one else would. they allowed you to come into their worlds and live and learn alongside them. they grow alongside you and you grow alongside them. years pass in that world and then one day, you look at them, and they’re children. you look at them, and wonder how you once thought they were grown up. you wonder how you were able to idolize them and allow them to guide you, when they were the ones who needed guidance. you see their mistakes so clearly now, and just want to help them. you can see how lost they are now, and are angry that they’re children who are going through what they are. they are young, so young. they look like babies, and you want to keep them safe, as they once kept you safe. you see yourself in them, and know that it’s thanks to them you’ve become who you are. these children, who will forever remain children, formed you into the near adult you are. you know that you too, are still a child, but only barely. you yearn to hold onto the friendship and love you felt for these characters, but can only find an almost parental love for them. they’re so young, is all you can think, they’re so young. you remember that you were once that young and naive, and wish to go back, so you can be with them again. your closest friends through childhood, will remain children forever, while you are cursed to grow old. yes, the worst part about growing up, is seeing your closest friends stay young.
