Summary: The people of Săliște are God-fearing folk, who tend to their faith with meticulous devotion day after day. But once night falls and the darkness settles in, the Lord’s gaze turns away from them — and something else takes hold of the land. Something that retreats to its castle between the mountains by the light of day.

Joel Miller spends his days and nights in quiet damnation. He watches the world of people from a respectful distance, unwilling to engage with them. But one night, there’s a knock at the castle gate, and in the form of a frightened young woman, light steps onto his courtyard — with a bottle of wine in her hands. She asks for shelter from the villagers who wish her dead, after she took the life of her fiancé.

And though Joel’s life has long been swallowed by shadow, he will soon come to realize that both darkness and light dwell within the human soul.
