Anxiety in Communications

Communication is an essential part of our lives. We communicate with many people under different situations, but do u ever feel frightened, uncomfortable, anxious, …?

I do!

Example situations:

Speaking with opposite sex

Speaking to your boss/senior

Speaking in competitions (eg. business pitch, recitation)

Speaking in panels/forums (eg. public speaking, MUN)

I would like to share my own experience speaking on a panel. It was my first experience of speaking in front of a few hundred people that I don’t know out of curriculum situations.

It was a panel related to the legacy of Warren Buffet and its extension. I spoke about education and learning, and about how technological breakthroughs change our habit of learning.

How I prepared:

I wrote a script, full word length speech script.

I prepared by doing many rehearsals, and by changing the wordings to be more speech friendly.

I bullet pointed the main ideas of each paragraph, and constructed a basic flow.

I got very much sleep the night before.

Outcome:

I was very nervous even when speaking in my preferred language. In the end, instead of following the prewritten script, I got through by speaking comfortably following the flow I had constructed previously. Although I added many “umm"s and “arghh”s in between sentences, I had a great experience of practicing public speaking and controlling my anxiety. Indeed, I realized that my anxiety subsided when I was speaking sincerely from the depths of my hearth.

Introducing the PS industry from China

This “new” technology from China - PS (photoshop) has been the most recent technique to get a better appearance. PS does everything you can think of and better, even better than surgery. PS can be done on phone applications, or more advanced with photoshop software on laptops.

Normally, Chinese citizens use phone apps for individual and everyone is a pro in it. Models and Celebrities tend to use the more advanced choice. Unlike whitening cream in India that is mainly for female, PS is widely used for both sex in China. People are also very open minded with PS, some even thinks that it is required to add filters or do minor PS with all photos before “publishing”.

Main function of PS: filters, better skin quality, changing skin color (whitening, redness, darkening), anti-aging, modify sculpture of facial features, enlarge eyes, brightening eyes, clearing dark circles, slim face, remove acne, change size of nose, teeth whitening, get taller, get slimmer. One can also use PS apps to do full make up.

As a student studied in United Kingdom for the past 6 years, I have experienced all the drowsy and wet weather of the great english countryside. Burberry has always been the most fashionable, high-end fashion brand from UK in my perspective. Due to the usual bad weather in UK, having a trench coat has been fashion trends among my community. I still recall the first Burberry trench coat that I got was the most traditional one in the classic color. Burberry has successfully establish its classing products, while the most renown - the trench coat. Among my friends and my generation, I believe most of us have at least one Burberry classic trench coat, it is not just because it has been the recent fashion trend, but the trench coat had been a very helpful kit especially when living in the UK. UK barely have sunshine and is mostly windy, trench coat does the perfect job for wind breaking and also keeps me warm. It also does great in all situations, no matter when I am in a Black Tie dinner or collecting my takeaways down the street.

One other part of Burberry that adores me is the Burberry Blue label. It was one occasion that I visited Japan and I got introduced into this younger Burberry. It acts totally different from baby Burberry or Burberry kids, but young and energetic for teenagers. Their flagship stores have became my must-go destination whenever I visit Japan. I would hope that Burberry Blue label could expand to more places.

Ideas to some questions:

- Burberry can maintain its competitive strategy among some older brands such as Polo and the remodeled Gucci. Burberry has the classic cut that everyone likes and also making many more new products that suits the market; while Polo mostly maintain its classic cut for polo wear. Unlike Gucci that has gone over with all the red and green designs, Burberry kept its simplistic designs that maintain its customers’ favor.

- Burberry has its target customers from different age group for its different product. It’s trench coat suits basically everyone who can afford. They also have the children line, Blue label and Black label for teenagers, professional outfit for working women, tailor made suits for men.

It’s not a plane, it’s a home!!!

SIA’s main success of their ability to have a strong differentiation among their competitors and created their brand with their top notched customer services. SIA developed many successful and famous services that led the public to remember them. For example, the Singapore Girl promotion. From the outsider, SIA is the perfect airline company, they have everything other company have and even better quality. They even have a lot of new creative nature blended into their services.

SIA is always prepared and ready for new challenges.

How does this airline make money when their competitors do not?

By their brand!

Customers live to have a comfort environment and skilled services especially when they can choose. SIA offers best customer services, thus when customers choose from a few company that costs similarly, we choose the best equipped ones.

Although there had been the 9/11 incident, but airplane is a major transportation that is necessary for traveling long distance and does not have a good subsidy, customers eventually will continue with airplane.

Whether or not to purchase the new space bed?

Absolutely!!!

As we have mentioned, airplane is the only long distance transportation exist, and will absolutely expand by length, distance and usage. International business will increase and more people would like to travel worldwide. SIA will eventually upgrade their seats, so it is better to do it the first among all airlines. This also show how superior, innovative and perfect SIA is.

Four Products: Predicting Diffusion

I think this idea is not very prominent for the mainstream market. Peanut butter is one of the dip that consumer use to comply with bread, so it only takes some portion of the market share while it also have to compete with jam jelly and other dips with bread. I actually love the idea that I do not have to wash my knife afterwards, but thinking big, the plastics and packaging needed for each individual packaging will lead to a lot of unnecessary waste and pollution for the world. Anyways, I think this product have a slow potential in the market.

High-tech bandage

One of the most helpful product for everyone in the world. I can see high-tech bandage having everyone as their potential customers, from children, mother, workers, and elderly, everyone! As it is a medical related product, a new form and helpful product will successfully and rapidly gain market share, as it impacts our daily life and may save lives. I think this invention very successful in the medical field and will grow fast.

Satellite radio

I think the firms had limit a small group of their targeted audience - motorist. It also seems like the two firms XM and Sirius are competing while operating in different locations. Although I acknowledge that this case is moderately old, but I have to say no one listens to radio anymore, we loose taste out of radio. Radio is an old-aged product, and should be retired. We have television, phones, better internet environment and social media. It is more applicable and convenient for out daily lives. We also have YouTube for free music.

PC screen with smell

I can see potential audiences from this PC screen, but not direct customers. I think this type of PC screen would work better if it merges with other company that provides more specific services, such as food delivery (menu) and computer game (virtual locations). PC screen with smell can be a function that future computers and phones have. I think it holds a possibility that it can merge to our daily life products in the future.
