SUNDAY, MAY 24TH — @nicolakincaid AT THE BONFIRE & VIGIL IN MYRTLE ROCK
Alice wasn't having a good day. It hadn't been a particularly bright week in island history — worry and exhaustion seemed to hover in the air. It felt heavy, like it was seeping into people's pores, and as the rapidly approaching summer brought weighty clouds that seemed to be waiting for the perfect moment to pour upon the islanders, it felt like they were leaving inside a pressure cooker. Her dad had been impossible the past days. He was no longer young and invincible, but seemed to think so, leaving every morning before the sun rose to help with the search. It also didn't help that she had spent the entire morning packing and unpacking into her new house, a white cottage near the beach, like she had always dreamed of.
The schedule of such move, however, had been set upon before the strike of tragedy, which meant that her moving plans could not be postponed. She had been glad, then, for the constant presence of her best friend in the morning as they sat on the hardwood floor of the empty house. Now, many hours later, she was searching for her between many familiar faces, a suspicious bottle of water in one hand. "The stress is hitting me so hard today that my conscience can't even concentrate on feeling guilty about inebriating myself on a day like this," she groaned, sitting on the empty spot beside Nicola and offering her the bottle. "There's some stuff I haven't talked to you about. Lochlan almost kissed me the night I came back."
#serious event is naturally the place for serious conversation#they have so much to talk about#( int — nicola. )

"Oh, thank god you're okay!" Alice, sighed, eyes studying him to make sure everything was alright. She was well aware that it was chaos out there, especially because her own father had been leaving at sunrise to help with the search on his boat. For a couple such as Conrad and Bella, who quite literally made the ocean their business (and address), she was sure it was even worse. "Bella?" She asked, brow furrowed in concern. It was mentally exhausting to see the sadness surrounding them so completely because of the people that were lost — it was another thing completely to worry about the people who were not yet lost, but who were risking a lot out of compassion. As she fell into step beside her best friend, Alice gave a silent thank you to the universe for that she had not lost. "Is she okay? Has she been out there?" Her hospital chronicle had been recent, after all. "Are you okay, though?"

LOCATION: Tortue Cove, Myrtle Rock. TIME: Around 5 PM, at the Bonfire and Lantern Vigil WITH: @malakaicardel
It was always devastating when the sea took people away: it reminded the people on the island that it didn't matter how much you loved something, it could always take more than you were willing to give.To those that were closer to the missing, it was probably even worse. A taste of hopelessness grew as each day went by without answers. Not feeling saddened by the sight of families being torn apart meant an appalling lack of empathy, but Alice, like many others, couldn't help but feel the sharp edge of relief twisting in her gut that it wasn't her father. Or her brother. or her best friend. It was a reminder that she too was human, that selfish was safe.
Selflessness didn't come as easy to the average human, and yet there was the entire island, herself included, threaded together by hope on that little corner of the world. It was an ode to community, to loving thy neighbour or something like that. An ode to what it truly meant to have a home. And there Alice was, after spending the entire day packing an unpacking, looking between those faces for the one of her best friend. She found another one instead and it seemed like it was the one she could never escape. "Kai," she said, still surprised to see him, and her throat still constricted with the words that went unsaid.

EVENT: BONFIRE & LANTERN VIGIL. LOCATION: Tortue Cove. OPEN TO: @elisabethstarters·
Community. Something Emma never understood, mainly because she never experienced it growing up. As the people around her grow close, expressing condolences from the deepest caverns of their warm, pumping hearts, Emma feels sick. Irritable, even. It also earns an itch to spread across her skin, though it feels mostly internal. An itch she can’t quite scratch. Though she’s been to enough of these, an island tradition, yet she’ll never grow used to the way everyone seems so…close. What was closeness when all you have to give is a cruel gaze and a cold shoulder? Emma wasn’t sure, though she attempts to find a balance despite the nervousness that makes a home inside her stomach.
Brown eyes were glued to the fire before her, Emma finally decided to take a seat closer to the flames. Was it selfish that all she could ponder about was her reputation? Yes. Was she aware of this? Yes and no. Emma’s guilt came in waves, especially as she heard the people around her hope and pray for the return of the missing men. Especially when she sees another lantern decorate the sky, illuminating the clouds that grow dark as the day grows long.
Soon enough, there’s a figure at her side, earning the itch ailing Emma to increase. There’s a deep inhale taken in, a look of annoyance gracing her stern and gorgeous expression. Oh, Emma, at least you have your looks and maybe your siblings. “Are you gonna just stand there or are you gonna sit?” Emma asks, attempting to blanket a sense of nonchalant to her tone. But, really, she just sounds plain. She clears her throat then, straightening her already pristine posture. “How um, how’s your evening so far?” Good enough.
Alice didn't think she would ever get used to the feeling of seeing into the past. This particular picture that painted the afternoon in hues of orange had been different back then — or perhaps she had been different, cynical, young. It bothered, before she left, how people could play the part of good neighbour and still be so overwhelmingly selfish as the people she saw on weekends at the country club. She found out, then, that real family was beyond those walls. Beyond the tennis courts and ivy covered walls. The main reason her mother fought so much to have her own life was because real love started with very simple things.
It was extending a hand when someone else needed, it was watching the sun set and the smell of the ocean. It was letting the rain pour on you when your best friend forgot their raincoat, because real islanders sure as hell don't use umbrellas. That's what she hadn't understood back then — that all you could ever want in life was perhaps in the simplest of things.
Emma, too, was a vision from the past. She was hardly different from what she had been, however, like even the air around her behaved the same way: infatuated but cautious, careful not to get too close. Alice had always liked her, despite the warning signs. She was truly an interesting character and Alice had always been inspired by interest. In Alice's eyes, Emma seemed like someone you could write an entire discography about. Dreadful, really, as art often was.
"I thought it was you," she replied, amused but absolutely not surprise to find out she still had the bite that followed the bark. "It's been a long time, Emma." Alice smiled, and she too had a mouth made for killing, even as the kindest of words would spill whenever it was open. Kindness was a choice.

The only people you trust AJ with is Kai and Alice
“True... kind of? Ava James is the most important person in my life, and her well-being is my top priority. Alice is AJ’s godmother and if anything were to happen to me, I know Alice would give her an incredible life. While Kai may not be her godfather, he has been a constant in her life since she was born and their bond is unbreakable. I’d trust them both to raise her if I wasn’t able to.”

You still love Kai.
"True — but, right now, not in the way you're thinking. I guess there's a corner of my hardly vacant, messy little heart that will always belong to him. The person that he was is part of the person that I am. I would never want to unlove him."

TUESDAY, MAY 12TH 2020. ✗ ALIBI WITH @elisabethisland.
It had been a long day, one with many flights and difficult customers and a boss whose ego was probably bigger than his manhood, but Rafael couldn’t complain — it was a job, one he needed if he intended to help his father dig himself out of debt. Two beers in, he had started a friendly game of pool with a co-worker at one of their favorite bars, but he had already sunk one of his own balls for the second time that night. “Fuck…” he muttered under his breath, dropping his head in shame as his co-worker laughed triumphantly, having won the game altogether. “Why don’t we play two-on-two?” Rafael propositioned, straightening up as he leaned against the pool table, hands splayed out against the red velvet. He turned instinctively to the person nearest him, “Hey, you wanna join my team? Next round’s on me if you agree.”
Alice was lounging around Alibi, trying to figure out the setlist for thursday happy hour live music — she had been hoping she could trick Cameron into singing a tune or two with her, but he had been MIA the past couple of days. In an effort to physically corner him, she decided to surprise him at his job, because that was such a regular person thing to do, but he had yet to make an appearance. As she waved at Jim in the corner, Alice was surprise at her split-moment recruitment, but it was a welcome distraction to the unbearable waiting. “Sure,” she shrugged, grabbing the nearest cue stick. “Let’s show the boys how it’s done.”

“I’m not going to be eaten by a bear.” Mackenzie scuffed. “But I think I’d rather that than this alternative.” Growing up, Alice was the cool older sister that Sophia constantly talked about. She was this individual who possessed all of the qualities one wanted. Beauty, brains, accomplishment. Normally Mackenzie wasn’t scared of anything. She jumped out of helicopters into the roaring sea to save lives for a living. But one Alice Grey with a look that could kill might have been the scariest thing she had ever seen. Maybe. “Not necessarily running but yes.” Mackenzie shrugged, taking a few cautious steps towards the other. There was no going back right now. “When did you come back home?” She might not have been the best keeping up with social media or the news. The last she knew was that Alice was off becoming this huge star. To find her back on the island was interesting. But, there were weirder things that have happened. Her own return being one of them.
"I'll take that as a compliment," Alice replied, a smile on her lips. "Fortunately for you, I'm not gonna eat you either." It was impossible to see Mackenzie and not think about the tears of her younger sister — the feeling of teenage heartbreak was so far behind her that Alice couldn't remember the tears, honestly. Perhaps she was actually getting old. "And why is that?" She asked, deciding to tease her just a moment longer. "Oh, I came last week. Just in time for Sophia's birthday."
