Inspire
By Mackenzie Baskerville
“The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all.”
- Walt Disney Comapny, Mulan
Inspiration is something we all strive for. It's what motivates us to go for the things in life that we want to either have or achieve.
“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”
- Vincent van Gogh
It's the fuel to the fire, the sun to life. It makes us move, it makes us soar.
A heart pounding in your chest, with just a little inspiration, you believe anything can be possible. It is.
I write this, not just because I want too. I write this because I need too.
“It's hard to beat a person who never gives up.”
- Babe Ruth
I've given up before. I'm not proud of it, but there it is. 'It's too hard. I failed.' - Sure, I did fail. I didn't study hard enough or I didn't apply myself as much as I could have.
I am not good enough for that.
That is the biggest load of lies we ever tell ourselves. We. Are. Not. Good. Enough.
You are. You are good enough to deserve what ever it is that you dream about. Be inspired. Allow yourself to be inspired. Don't ever question your capabilities.
I believe in you.
“Tomorrow will be better.” “But what if it’s not?” I asked. “Then you say it again tomorrow. Because it might be. You never know, right? At some point, tomorrow will be better.”
- Morgan Matson, Amy and Roger's Epic Detour
There is this one thing we all do (there are many things, but this one in particular), we procrastinate. It's the evil under a veil of good intentions.
“When all is said and done, more is said than done.”
- Lou Holtz
Procrastination is the anti-inspiration. We may think its the thing that gets us revved up and going, but what are you really doing? Planning for another time.
How about we turn this into a good thing. Instead of daydreaming over things we would like to check off our bucket lists, how about you take that step forwards and not waste time. Write up a check list of things you need to do to get to where you want to be, then do them. Just because you have a gym membership, doesn't mean you're getting fitter. You need to actually go to the gym.
“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can't achieve it.”
- Jordan Belfort
“All the effort in the world won't matter if you're not inspired.”
- Chuck Palahniuk, Diary
“Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway.”
- Mary Kay Ash
What inspires you?
I love old history quotes. I love seeing people do something I want to do, because I can imagine myself in their position, doing that and better.
My family also inspire me. I don't want to disappoint them. I want to achieve more than they thought I could do. Some people say you shouldn't worry about what other people think, but I always wondered; why? I mean, when it comes to my parents, they have always been an inspiration, so why shouldn't I think about them in terms of motivation for bettering myself as far as getting to where I want to be in life?
If something makes you feel like you should push to do better, than you damn well let it push you to do better. I don't care what anyone else says, inspiration can come from anything. It is a truly beautiful thing. Don't ever let it go because someone told you, you shouldn't look for it there.
“Why do they always teach us that it's easy and evil to do what we want and that we need discipline to restrain ourselves? It's the hardest thing in the world--to do what we want. And it takes the greatest kind of courage. I mean, what we really want.”
- Ayn Rand
Sometimes, I get so frustrated when I hear someone say they aren't good enough and they just let so much negativity float around them. I hear it in myself, too.
'How am I ever supposed to compete?' You know something, you don't have to always compete with people. Why don't you ignore them and do the best that you can because this isn't a competition, this is your life. You live it the way you dream because at the end of the day, you're not living for multiple people who you need to outdo constantly. If you live for yourself and do everything possible to create the pathway to whatever you desire, people are going to see that and they will be the ones that are jealous of you.
Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if they are showing you the way.
- Donald Miller
“You're better than this. Better than whatever it is you're going to do now.”
- Richelle Mead, Last Sacrifice
Change (and accepting it), is the hardest thing we deal with. Life is a creature of habit. For so many of us, just changing the littlest things in our routine can throw us off completely. But change is necessary, otherwise we become stagnant beings. Autobots with a singular direction.
Do you honestly want to look back at your life and say, 'Yeah that's right, I was so good at being complacent with repetition and being boring!' - Don't lie, you don't actually feel that way.
I understand how hard change is! I really do. Everyone goes through something that is so hard and they wish and pray that it would stop and go back to how it was. You know what though? That was the best thing for you. Maybe not at the time, but eventually, you'll see. Time is as kind, as it is, cruel.
“Inspiration is a guest that does not willingly visit the lazy.”
- Pyotr Ilyich Tchailovsky
“You'll never reach perfection because there's always room for improvement. Yet get along the way to perfection, you'll learn to get better.”
- Hlovate, Versus
Honestly, I could go on and on. I just want you to know that you are precious.
Don't ever let go of what inspires you. You might change and what inspires you may differentiate as time goes by. Your dreams may change and goals may diverge elsewhere.
I just want to leave you with one of the most beautiful quotes I think I've ever read.
“Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels.”
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie
Never stop being inspired.

The more you know; Twisted Treeline.
For this release, I looked high and low for a high ranking competitive TT player. My thoughts behind today's release was to help people (like me) who don't play this mode but would like to learn more about it.
I was fortunate to be introduced to Katsuie, one of the highest ranking TT players on EUW. Our aim was to, firstly; teach, but secondly; help expand the knowledge about this mode and increase popularity. There is sort of a silent call for ranked ques and more competitive opportunities to be made available for this map and hopefully with enough recognition, our players may be able to achieve this!
Could you please tell us a little about yourself. You’ve been playing in a three’s team for quite some time now and even managed to reach Challenger. What drew you to this game mode? What do you feel are some noticeable differences between TT and SR?
Hey, I'm Katsuie. I'm the creator of a 3v3 Challenger team which has been hovering around the top 3 and been placed on Rank 1 for most of Season 3 on EUW. What mainly drew me to this game mode is that I wanted to have some change from the constant Solo Queue I played. After hitting Diamond I, I felt like playing anymore of it was pointless, and trying to go any further would be too time consuming. Not only that, but the atmosphere in Solo Queue tended to be very frustrating.
A friend of mine asked me once to play on his 3v3 team, and after playing on it for quite a few matches, I really started to enjoy it. It rewarded an aggressive playstyle way more than SR did.
The most noticeable differences compared to SR are the length- of the matches and the laning phases. They to tend to be a lot shorter, with matches rarely lasting longer than 30+ minutes, and laning phases quickly being over in the first few minutes.
So there are three different roles on the map. Which role do you play and how do you feel each individual role affects the game?
There are actually four different roles; Bruiser, AP Carry, Jungle and Support! The Support is a less common role, as it is part of the Support-Meta which doesn't seem to be too popular outside of EUW.
Regardless, I play as the Bruiser in my team. While each role carries a different playstyle to it, I personally feel that they all affect the game equally. If someone gets far ahead, they can usually dictate the pace of the game by themselves. Every role has the opportunity to carry. Whilst most of the damage will rely on the Bruiser and the AP Carry, Junglers and Supports will usually help them to that point by assisting the lanes. So in the end, not quite a lot of difference compared to SR in that aspect.
Could you give us a break down of champions you feel are viable vs unviable in this map type that are popular in Summoners Rift?
The main difference is that almost all of the AD Carries are unviable on TT with the rare exception of Vayne or maybe even Quinn sometimes. AD Carries rely on getting to late game in order to be a threat, whereas most TT games do not even enter late game.
Other than that, champions with high waveclear tend to be viable in TT. The map is a lot smaller, and with the jungle being so close to the lane, a high amount of waveclear can lead to a longer amount of time you are allowed to roam.
Additionally, most champions with a high burst potential do naturally good on TT as well, which means most of the popular AP's (Like Gragas, Ziggs and Syndra) do well on TT, sometimes even more so than they do on SR.
Since the map is so small, skirmishes break out more frequently than they do on Summoners Rift. How do you deal with the constant threat of a ‘gank’, especially since there are no wards available to purchase in this mode. How do you feel about the lack of vision control via no ward allowance?
In order to combat the lack of vision you have on TT, you have to be more aware as to where your opponents are. You have to be able to guess where the enemy currently is, and put more emphasis on communicating with your team mates about the whereabouts of the enemy. As it can take as less as 5 seconds from knowing where your enemy was to being ganked, you have to be always sure that you know your potential escape routes and that your team is backing you up before proceeding to far into enemy territory.
Are there any items on SR that you would like to see implemented into Twisted Treeline?
All of the items from SR are already implemented into TT, with a few exceptions like Rabadon's Deathcap and DFG being replaced with TT's own variant, which are usually stronger than its respective counterparts.
With summoner spells like Flash + Barrier/Ignite/Smite being the most popular spells used on Summoners Rift, is this the same for Twisted Treeline? Or are there other spells that get prioritized instead? If so, what are the benefits of taking these instead?
The most popular summoner spells on TT are Flash + Exhaust/Ignite/Smite, so basically Barrier is exchanged with Exhaust. Exhaust has an even bigger effect on TT, because being able to potentially shut someone down for a few seconds has as increased impact when there are less overall people.
Also, instead of the generic red (slow + true damage burn) & blue buff (cooldown reduction + mana regen), Twisted Treeline instead, boasts the Ghost Relic and two Alters. TT also has its own version of Baron Nasher in Vilemaw. What do these buffs do? Are there certain roles that benefit from certain buffs more than others (example; blue buff on mana using midlaners) or is it a case of control all buffs no matter who they land on?
The Ghost Relic is a small buff which spawns every 90 seconds and provides the champion to pick it up with a small amount of health and mana, while also providing a small speed boost. We usually focus on securing this buff to our AP Carry, as he will benefit the most from the health and mana.
The Altars give provide a passive +3 gold for each lasthit if you capture one of them, by capturing both you acquire a +10% AD and AP from your total amount. This buff is usually only noticable in the later stages of the game, so the Altars are more frequently contested at a later point.
The Vilemaw buff lends you increased HP and Mana regen, attackspeed and cooldown reduction. Just like the Baron buff, it is beneficial to everyone.
So as far as buff control goes, they are all global except for the Relic, which I mentioned we focus on giving it to the AP.
Do you feel like you prioritize buff control over fast tower push?
Not at all. Towers are the most important objective, and the amount of towers you have left standing can easily decide if you are about to lose a game or not. If there are only 1 or 2 towers standing, it can easily end in a finishing push past the 20 minute mark. Only in the rare case that we are not able to push towers, we decide to take the Altars or Vilemaw.
Are there many different ways to play the map? Could you break down your favourite strategy to secure a win?
There are mainly two different ways in which people play the map:
The Jungle-Meta and the Support-Meta.
The Jungle-Meta consists out of two solo lanes with an AD Bruiser an AP Carry, while someone is mainly in the jungle. This the most popular way people are playing this map, and I'd even go as far as to say that on some servers it is used exclusively.
In the Support-Meta, you have an AD Bruiser with a Support on top lane and an AP Carry on bot. The duo-lane focuses on pushing as hard as possible, so they are able to consistently roam. This way they can catch out people, steal the enemy jungle or provide additional security to their bot laner.
This is the playstyle we prefer, and even have somewhat popularized on our respective server.
Do you have any advice for anyone that would be interested in playing Twisted Treeline on a competitive level?
Before playing TT on a competitive level, one should get familiar with the most viable picks. There are a few tierlists for 3v3 which can be searched up, but we also have our own one at http://delta-series.com/index.php/l2p, even though it is slightly outdated.
Other than that, the most general advice I give is to constantly make sure the jungle is cleared, as it is easy to do so and will increase the overall amount farm for your team. I personally think this is something most teams seem to overlook. And to always prioritize towers over any other objective.
I also redirect people to a fancy guide I've written once for Cloth5, which can be found here:
http://cloth5.com/info-and-tips-to-reach-high-elo-in-3v3-from-the-euw-challenger-rank-1/
Where do you feel the pro league for TT sits? Are there many tournaments that you’ve competed in and if so, could you please tell us more about your experience while there?
The pro scene for TT is currently on flat ice, as far as for EUW goes. I know of several tournaments being hosted on the NA servers, but we're lacking tournaments on EUW.
There was a while though where the popularity for a competitive 3v3 has risen, resulting in a few ESL tournaments and the so called "Delta-Series" which was a weekly prized tournament, but as less and less teams participated, they stopped occurring.
Me and my team have placed first in the first ESL TT tournament, which was also streamed and casted, but the popularity for those have died down as there were no prizes.
In the Delta-Series, we placed first 3 times in a row and third once. Sadly at that point, the interest for these died down as well, and once not enough teams showed up, the organizers decided to quit.
What would you like to see Riot do to assist in making this game mode more popular?
In all seriousness, all that Riot would have to do is to create a Solo Queue Ranked mode for 3v3, and it would at least triple the amount of people who played it. But it seems that Riot does not consider adding it, mostly in fear of "splitting up" the playerbase, as they'd like to capitalize on SR, AFAIK.
Alternatively, they could host a prized TT tournament themselves, so people would feel inclined to play TT competitively. I wish Riot would at least consider doing it once, basically just to test the waters and see if there is interest.
Are there any shout outs you would like to make?
Am I allowed to make a shout out to myself :P? We have a stream which we dedicate to TT, and frequently answer questions during our queues.
You may find Katsuie on facebook and check out the stream on twitch tv! www.twitch.tv/Katsuie

Brandon 'Stars' Jo also joined me for an interview at MidCity! He was amazingly patient with my being very nervous (as this was one of the very first live interviews I'd conducted).
A big shout out to him in my gratitude. He certainly brought a lot of great insight. 10/10 would recommend randomly interrupt his eating lunch to interview haha.

Behind the scene with Kylarii

Joining me today is Caitlin ‘Kylarii’ Kang from ACL Pro. I wanted to find out more about her and her jobs behind the eSports scenes.
First of all, good afternoon Caitlin! As you know, I have been very curious to learn more about you and your exploits with event managements. I have to ask, did you always have a passion for event management? What was the thing that first created your interest?
I’ve always loved managing events – from the planning to doing the hands on work on the day itself. I just love the atmosphere at an event, and knowing that I had a hand in helping to make it happen.
How did you find that led into the gaming industry, more so, League of Legends? Or was there another game that started your passions for gaming?
That’s a funny story, actually! I didn’t use to play computer/video games, and I’d never even heard of most of them. One day, when I was meant to be studying for my first year University exams, my boyfriend started playing World of Warcraft next to me. Naturally, I was procrastinating, so I asked if I could try a few moves. Of course, he was more than happy to let me try it… at the time. To cut a long story short, to this day, I’m still using his account because I grew too attached to my level 30 Paladin, which I had named Kylarii (he had to get a new account and start over, teehee). After some time, the both of us made the transition to casual raiding, and then to hardcore raiding with a small group of friends that we had made on WoW. Sometime after the Dragon Soul patch, we started playing League of Legends and never looked back!
How very gracious of him! That’s pretty big dedication to give up a WoW account like that!
So you first got into working ACL Pro, what made you choose them as an organisation? Did you apply to a bunch of different places? Or did you just know that you wanted to be a part of ACL above all else?
I wanted to get involved in the Esports scene here in OCE, so I asked around and one of my friends recommended I check out the ACL website. I read up on them and then got in touch with ACL Beware, who interviewed me and gave me instructions on what I could do to help. I didn’t know much about what I was getting into before I did it, but working with ACL has definitely been the right decision for me – I’ve met so many amazing people and gotten to help out with so many cool projects!
What was it like when you helped with your very first tournament? Were you nervous and if so, how did you tackle those nerves?
Well, the first tournament I helped with was ACL Online Round 1 in 2013. It was a gradual easing in, so that went alright. The next online tournament, however, was the OCE Championship qualifiers, which ACL was helping to host. That was massive; we had more than 600 teams playing! There was a lot of multi-tasking involved, and dealing with all kinds of different things, so it was a great experience.
The first live tournament that I refereed at was the OCE Championships at PAX Melbourne 2013. I was definitely a little apprehensive about that, because I’d never been to a gaming convention before, much less refereed a live tournament. The ACL team was amazing – they made me feel welcome and were extremely approachable so I could ask lots of questions without feeling silly. The other referees and I were given a referee training session with Riot Benji, and that really helped to clear up a lot of things. I think the way I tackled the nerves at PAX was to keep busy! I helped out everywhere I could, kept looking for things to do, and each subsequent day of PAX was easier to handle than the day before.
PAX ’13 was the first PAX event in Australia and it was huge. I couldn’t imagine what that would have been like, especially for your first live event. I have certainly been to a few live events that you have helped run. You’re always running around like a headless chook, keeping very busy! What are the jobs you look after behind the scenes?
Oooh, that’s a tough one. I don’t actually know off the top of my head, I just do whatever needs to be done at the time! This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I go from settling disputes, to making sure the players have the gear they need, fixing tech issues, making sure the next teams are ready to play, coordinating between the games and the stream team, making sure all the other admins are on the same page.. a little bit of everything, really!
Do you have plans to work with Riot again? Are there any events that you might be able to tell us about?
I would definitely love to keep working with ACL and Riot, and 2014 looks to be very promising for Oceania in terms of developing our Esports scene! I can’t really give any details about events that have not been announced yet, but Riot is really doing their best to help us grow, so it’s a great time to be involved with Esports.
Oh and aren’t we all looking forward to it! When you’re not Kylarii, ACL Admin, what do you like to do in your free time?
I’m an avid fantasy and sci-fi fan, so I read a lot. I still enjoy doing sports (I used to figure skate), but I’ve gotten a little lazy now, heheh. I play LoL a fair bit, my highest solo queue ranking so far is Gold III, and I’m trying to work my way upwards!
Best of luck in your endeavours! If you could give advice to anyone else that was interested in doing work behind the scenes, what advice would you like to give them?
I’d say definitely put yourself out there – don’t be afraid to network with people and get to know the guys behind the computers. Everyone is really friendly and most everyone I know is more than willing to teach dedicated volunteers. Also make sure you’re really attentive to what other people are doing, you tend to pick up a lot just by watching the way people work. Being willing to learn and always being ready to lend a helping hand is regarded very highly and will get you far.
Any last shout outs?
I'd like to thank the ACL crew, ACL Beware, ACL Vanzr, JB and Midnite for welcoming me into the ACL family. A big shoutout also to all the Rioters who work tirelessly to bring us an amazing game. Thanks especially to Riot Benji and Adorabear for taking me under their wing - I've learnt heaps from you both. And last but not least, to my boyfriend for always supporting me in everything I do!
Thank you very much for your time. I for one definitely want to thank you for helping make our events run smoothly and cannot wait to see what else is in store for the future!
Make sure you guys follow her on her twitter @ https://twitter.com/kylarii28

4.1 Patch note review with UberGiantsBro
Talking with me today about the 4.1 patch notes (first patch of Season 4) is David 'UberGiantsBro' Ugbergang. He shares his thoughts with the new changes Riot has implemented.

Firstly, I would like to just touch on the tower changes (as this has been what has people a little riled up). With the newest patch out, do you see new strats coming out to tackle the change to 2v1 lanes?
So the extra armour on top and mid turrets makes fast pushing a bit harder now to the point where it's hardly worth it but I still think fast pushing is viable if you get the right lane set ups. In terms of changes to competitive play, I see early roaming becoming more popular but that's about it.
Now as far as prominent items are concerned, at the end of Season 3, we saw Spirit Visage and Sunfire Cape become the ‘must have’ items for toplane bruisers. Now with the roll out of patch 4.1, Spirit Visage received a nerf to the passive cooldown, while Sunfire Cape had its flat damage amount reduced (with the addition of scaling damage that doesn’t become as effective till ~level 15). Do you think we’ll see a change to the current toplane bruiser meta? Will people constitute these items for something else? Or do you think they are small enough changes that people can still rush Spirit Visage, but hold off on Sunfire Cape till later levels?
I think Visage is a bit more situational as opposed to being a must have for every champion against a team with some magic damage. You'll still build it on those champs like Mundo where the increased self healing is useful. The change to Sunfire might mean top laners will go for Tiamat more often if they need pushing power but I think people will still build it because the components are so good for lane, same with visage (at least with spectres cowl).
Do you think that the changes have brought in some sort of hidden buff to another item that people don’t really use yet?
I mentioned Tiamat before because it's a good earlier alternative to Sunfire if you need pushing power in top, you could argue banshees veil for magic resist as well.
How do you feel the changes to jungle items will affect junglers (heavy gankers vs heavy farmers)? Do you think this will affect their sustain in the jungle and that the farmers will come out ahead?
The biggest change I've noticed with the increased sustain in the jungle items is that champions who had mana problems are now a lot more viable again. Amumu, Sejauni, Nautilus all come to mind. The changes to sustain do benefit the heavy farmers more but I don't think the changes are enough to make any one style particularly overpowered.
There have been a couple of changes to champions as well, what are your thoughts with the adjustment to Annie stun timer? Do you feel like her over-powering edge has been diminished somewhat and do you think we might see her phased out for other mage-supports?
So Annie's nerf will make her a little less popular but I think she will still be good. She is probably still one of the best mage supports even if another fotm pops up like Brand support.
Do you think we could also see a return of Janna with the Monsoon (R) buffs as well?
Possibly, I think she's still a bit overshadowed by other supports at the moment though.
Riven also received an adjustment to her AD scaling (bonus AD changed to total AD scaling), do you think this will affect her overall game play and team fight potential? Do you think this will change her classification from primary fighter to primary assassin, considering the nerf to her shield?
Riven is basically the same, just a bit less forgiving for Riven players who waste their shield.
Also because of the changes, do you think that we might see her played now predominately in the mid lane where burst damage is more relevant, rather than the overall sustain damage we usually see from toplane bruisers?
I don't the change will directly effect where she is played. I think it's more up to the champion matchups (and of course the player's skill) that will determine whether she is picked and what lane she goes in.
Last but not least! Who do you feel is a champion that is being left in the dark and would benefit greatly from a re-work? For instance, Urgot has been rated the lowest played champion of 2013 (according to lolking.net).
Graves! I miss playing him a fair bit as he's been overshadowed. Not so much a rework but I saw a change that was suggested about making his buckshot do more damage the closer he is to a target and making it scale against armour. I think this would be cool because it'll make tanks think twice about getting in your grill and would bring him back to popularity.
A big thank you for your time David!

Another Monday, another upload! Changing things up a bit with a live interview this time. This time, featuring Jordan 'Zeforus' Wong! You can find him on Twitter at @Zeforus. He runs a lot of local Melbourne lan events, check him out!
PLACE and I spent the day at MidCity, interviewing quite a few people! It was such a fun day, full of lots of intricate learning. My head was pretty sore by the end of it :P
This was the first day I've ever done something like this before. I really have to say a big thank you to all those involved for their patience and compliance. Because it was a random 'pull people off the street to interview' kind of ordeal, we had no scripts nor many in-depth questions prepared. But I would do it all over again in a heart beat!
