Language practice / pen pal game
I came up with a very simple idea to help me practice my target languages, so if you want to take part please hit me up !
What is the game ?
The goal is to find someone that is learning your native language and that speaks your target language.
Here are 30 questions. You should ask each other to answer a question (ex : number 18.) This gives you the opportunity to write a paragraph that allows you to search for more vocabulary and grammar than basic conversations.
Tumblr media
Ask each other all the questions (or agree on a different number if you feel like there are too many / not enough questions) before introducing yourself to each other (name, city, studies, hobbies, family…)
Hopefully having someone writing personal things to you about themselves will trigger your curiosity enough to help you write in your target language regularly, practice, and bond with someone !
How did I come up with this game ?
I have tried to practice languages forever and I think one of the best ways to practice it is through conversation with native people of the languages I learn. However I have always found it very hard to find a pen pal and bond with someone I don’t know. Most of the time, the conversations I’ve had with “pen pals” did not go any further than basic information about ourselves and it did not help learn the language. With this game I wish to trigger curiosity in order to practice and bond with someone so we can practice even once the game is over !
Want to play this game with me ?
I am looking to practice Spanish and Italian (also would not be against English) and I am a French native speaker. So if you are a native speaker of these languages and are learning French (or just want to play the game and are willing to write to me in your native language), that could work !
Please be somewhere between 20 and 25 yo
I am willing to use snail mail or e-mails for that game as I think it is more convenient to write “long” texts ! Also, snail mail is more personal and triggers curiosity even more
We can discuss everything in DMs ! Please hit me up !
And feel free to reblog or repost the game if you want to do the same with other languages and/or your followers :)

sometimes we end get very stressed, and this can easily transform into a continuous cycle of stress. it’s the worst, and it’s easy to forget what it feels like to just relax. so, here are some steps you can take to get yourself out of this stress cycle!
be aware of the state you’re in right now. how are you feeling? sad? stressed? tired? this is pretty simple, but the first step is to just acknowledge those negative feelings, so that you can get out of them.
accept the state you’re in too. not only should you be aware of it, accept it! every state is temporary, whether it’s good or bad. you’re never going to feel happy or sad or stressed forever. also, try to accept what cannot be changed in your current situation (aka the thing you might be stressed about) and act on what can be changed.
get your thoughts out of your head. don’t leave them jumbled inside of you mind! get out a notebook or a piece of paper, and jot down all the things on your mind. i like to make a mindmap, because sometimes i don’t have the energy to write in full sentences. but if journaling isn’t your thing, you can also try talking to someone you trust!
ask yourself: will this matter in a day? a week? a year? the answer is most likely no! so if you’re not going to stress about it then, don’t stress out about it now! i know this is way easier said than done, but think about a time when you were equally as stressed, and how after it happened, you survived and it’s all good now!
alright, now it’s time to get up. get off your couch or bed! start cleaning/organizing your space (because a clean space = a clean mind). it’s also nice to go for a walk or start exercising (i personally don’t do this very often, but when i do, i feel great after!).
do some self care. dedicate a night to pampering yourself and making yourself feel good! paint your nails and put on a face mask, if that’s your thing!
embrace the silence. consciously do nothing. we drift through our busy lives without pausing. we’re often running around anticipating what’s to come next, treating the current moment as if it’s not enough. this is continuous stress. but stopping and just listening to the silence around you will allow you to actually hear your own thoughts. this may seem completely boring at first, but it can be super calming! this way, you will find so much more peace by focusing on where you are right now than where you would rather be.
don’t sweat the small stuff. maybe someone said something rude to you, or maybe someone accidentally pushed you over. but don’t dwell on it for too long. just brush it off, and continue on with your day. dwelling on it for too long adds to your pile of negativity and stress. we all have a limited time on this earth, so why would you constantly spend it with negativity?
take action. if you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed by all the things you have to do, just take the first tiny step, and keep going from there. and when you’re done, let everything go (including the stress). work hard, and have trust in the universe that it it will all work out.
enjoy yourself! find balance between everything. try something new, hang out with friends, or do a hobby you enjoy! work hard, but just make sure to have fun every so often.
alright, so i hope these tips helped! i know that it’s easier said than done, but if you practice these steps, you will find more peace and less stress in yourself!
if you have any more questions or need to vent about your day, my ask box is always open!

Hello everyone, long time no see! I just got back from a trip to visit a family friend, who also happens to be a super-smart lawyer. We talked non-stop for an hour about how she studied during law school! So naturally here I am to regurgitate the information to my lovely tumblr friends:
Take your class notes. Re-read them, and then start to revise and rewrite them. If you had 100 pages of notes before, your second set of notes should be 50 pages. You are essentially taking notes from your notes.
Do this again, cutting the notes in half. I know this seems repetitive, but you’re retaining information by rewriting and summarizing it. The more you do it, the better you’ll do later.
Continue to rewrite and summarize your notes until you have a one page outline. This outline is your life-saver on tests. (It’d also be handy to keep all of the outlines you accumulate for your final)
Memorize the outline! When you sit down to take a test, the first thing you should do is flip to a blank page and copy down your outline from memory. Because you rewrote it over and over, you should be able to fill in the gaps in the outline, which will help immensely on the test.
That’s the gist of it! If you have any questions/comments feel free to message or send an ask. (Personally I love this method and I’m definitely using it next school year!)

Hello all!
I was unable to find a December Studyblr challenge, so I decided to make my own.
As the year winds down and the weather gets colder, we tend to slow down and reflect more. I incorporated some reflective/gratitude/personal posts as well as some traditional studyblr posts into this post-a-day challenge. Please take the daily topics loosely. They should be subjective and interpreted as you wish.
I’d love to see your posts so please use the tag #ennui-evasion padc so I can reblog them!

Clean your room - or at least your desk/bed/floor. It will help your head to feel clear too.
Open your curtains & windows - fresh air and natural light can do wonders in my experience. Plus, it helps regulate your sleep, appetite, and mood.
Take a shower or have a bath - especially important if you haven’t had one in a while. This will help you feel refreshed.
Put on clean clothes - and put the clothes you were wearing in the wash.
If you tend to spend all your time in your room, get out of it for a bit - do something in the kitchen or lounge, or go for a walk (even if it’s just around the block)
Stretch - there are plenty of stretching and yoga videos on you tube. Look some up and give them a go.
Drink a glass of water - and keep one near you too. I’m sure you already know this, but staying hydrated is important.
Get the hard/important tasks out of the way while you have the energy - when we have mental illness, running out of energy early in the day is very normal. Try to get all the most important things done first.
Have some comfort food, but make sure you eat healthy too - it’s alright to eat something you like, but have some fruit and vegetables too. If you don’t like plain fruit, consider making a smoothie instead.
Set some goals - it doesn’t matter how small or big they are (eg. have 3 meals today, go for a walk in the afternoon), whether they are daily or weekly, but achieving goals can make you feel as though you have accomplished something.
And finally, remember that it is okay to have bad days - bad days don’t mean you’ve lost all progress in your recovery, and they don’t make you worthless or a bad person. Don’t give up just because you’ve had a bad day/week/etc. It’s okay to have days that don’t go so great. Stay strong xx

Looking for podcasts about language and linguistics? Here’s a comprehensive list with descriptions! I’ve also mentioned if shows have transcripts. If there are any I missed, let me know!

The Allusionist Stories about language and the people who use it, from Helen Zaltzman (Transcripts for all episodes) (my review)
Grammar Girl Episodes are rarely longer than 15 minutes, but they’re full of tips about English grammar and style for professional writing, and more! (Transcripts for all episodes).
The World in Words From PRI, The World in Words has been delivering wonderful interview-drive stories about language and life since 2008.
Conlangery Particularly for those with an interest in constructed languages, they also have episodes that focus on specific natural languages, or linguistic phenomena.
Subtext a podcast about the linguistics of online dating.
English

Words/etymology
Words for Granted In each episode Ray Belli explores the history of a common English word in around fifteen minutes.
Very Bad Words A podcast about swearing and our cultural relationship to it.
Lexitecture Ryan, a Canadian,  and Amy, a Scot share their chosen word each episode.
Animology Vegan blogger Colleen Patrick Goudreau uses her love of animals as a starting point for exploring animal-related etymologies.
Translation
Speaking of Translation A monthly podcast from Eve Bodeux & Corinne McKay.
LangFM Stories of people from the world of language, including interpreters, translators, dialect coaches and many more.
Troublesome Terps The podcast about the things that keep interpreters up at night.
Back catalogues and Odds & Ends
There are also a number of podcasts that have only a few episodes, are no longer being made, or are very academic in their focus:
Language Creation Society Podcast (8 episodes, 2009-2011)
Given Names (four part radio series from 2015, all about names. My review)
Speculative Grammarian Podcast (from the magazine of the same name, about 50 episodes from Dec 2009-Jan 2017)
Linguistics Podcast (on YouTube, around 20 episodes in 2013 introducing basic linguistic concepts)
Evolving English: Linguistics at the Library (8 episodes 2018), from the British Library.
How Brands are Build (season 1 of this show focuses on brand naming)
The Endless Knot is not strictly a language podcast, but they often include word histories, fans of the Lingthusiasm colour episode may find their colour series particularly interesting
Word of Mouth (BBC 4, also available as a podcast)
LingLab (very occasionally updated podcast from graduate students in the Sociolinguistics program at NC State University)
Silly Linguistics (ad hoc episode posting, but episode 7 is an interview with Kevin Stroud for History of English fans)
WACC Podcast (guest lectures at Warwick Applied Linguistics)
Sage Language and Linguistics
Let’s Talk Talk
Queer Linguistics has a couple of episodes, with a bit of classroom vibe
This is a completely revised listing from June 2018. The March 2017 list kept growing (yay!) so I’ve now completely restructured it based on themes. I’m always excited to be able to add more podcasts to the list, so if you know of any linguistics/language podcasts not here, please let me know! (I usually wait until a show has at least 3 episodes before I add it to the list)

Things I Do At The Start Of Every Month
• Upload and delete photos from my phone. Google Photos has become my best friend, so once a month I make sure to upload all my recent photos to it, and then delete (most of) them from my phone to free up space.  •Figure out monthly finances and budget. I try to determine what the month should like for me money wise. Where do I have money coming in? Where is money most likely going to go? What’s the max I want to spend in each area? Sometimes it really helps, other times it doesn’t.   •Review + rearrange calender. I pull up Google Calendar, my dry erase board and planner and make sure everything is the same in each. I add events, rearrange them, and delete others.  •Make plans w/ friends and family. This isn’t something I do all the time, but if I really want to go out to eat or do something special with my mum or a sibling I’ll let them know and we’ll try to set a date to do so.  •Schedule appointments. More like make a list of things I need to schedule in the upcoming days/week. •Make/Buy birthday/holiday cards. I usually handmake my cards so having them premade is less stressful than waiting the day before (or day of) to try and draw out something spectacular.  •Plan off/zero/me days. It doesn’t matter what you call it. Sometimes you just need to make sure you have a day or two set to just focus on you. •Wash and clean car. I don’t own a car but I try to make sure the one I primarily ride in is fairly clean inside in general.   •Change bedding. Actually, I do this more often now. I change my bedding twice a month and wash my pillowcases once a week.  •Essentials shopping trip. If I’m in need of a face cleanser, lotion, toothpaste, I plan to go get it.  •Deep clean my bedroom/Reorganise my spaces. That’s the only area I really have to clean. I’ll sweep/mop the floor. Dust everything down. Clean my mirrors. Reorganise my shelves, dresser top, and closet. •Write down broad goals and to-dos. Basically, a rough idea of what I hope to accomplish and things that have to get done over the next few weeks. •Wash makeup brushes/give my makeup a good wipe down. Have no fear, I wash my makeup brushes at least once a week and spray them down with my daily brush cleaner, but sometimes I get lazy and leave the ones I don’t use that often dirty. Therefore, I’ll go ahead and wash them and really clean off/disinfect my palettes, lipglosses, foundation etc  •Pick two books to read this month. This is just from one of my yearly goals to read a new book every two months. I’ve been trying to choose one on my reading list and a ‘self-help’ type book.

GUIDE TO:
Tumblr media
FIX YOUR SLEEPING SCHEDULE (1-2 months)
Try to wake up earlier every day. Like 5 - 10 min earlier than the day before. Until you wake up any time before 8am or so…
If you struggle with waking up & snooze button is you bff:
Put your alarm clock as far away from the bed as possible.
Drink a glass of water right after you wake up.
Pour another glass of water on yourself right after you wake up.
Prepare some coffee the night before, leave it by your bedside, drink it after you wake up.
Have your blinds/curtains open, so that it’s bright after you wake up.
Try to go to bed 5-10 min earlier than the night before.
Track how many hours of sleep you’re getting. Aim to get at least 7h per day or 49h per week.
Increase your sleeping hours incrementally. Aim to get at least 1h of sleep more than the previous week. For example, if this week you slept for 41hrs, aim to get an extra hour of sleep next week, so it’s 42h.Once you get enough hours of sleep and wake up early-ish.
Try to keep your sleeping schedule consistent. It is really important to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.  Even if it’s weekend. Or even if that means, you getting less than 7hrs of sleep that day. I’d say waking up at the same time everyday is the most important step, which will help you the most with fixing your sleeping schedule.
START EATING HEALTHY (1-2 months)
This step really depends from person to person, but firstly I suggest you take some blood tests to see if you have any deficiencies, etc. Especially, if you struggle with cravings.
Try intermittent fasting, if you struggle with binge eating or overeating. As it will help you to learn to listen to your body better: when it’s hungry, when it’s full, etc. It’s really simple, there are many methods of Intermittent fasting, but I’d suggest 16/8 for the beginners. (Google it for more info)
DRINK ALL THE WATER. Again, if you’re not drinking enough water, try to level up your water game incrementally. Download some water tracking app on your phone to help you. Drinking water will make you more energetic, increase your metabolism, and decrease you appetite (among many more benefits).
Track what you eating. I would really suggest tracking your meals for around a month. Because, most of the time people have no idea that what they’re eating is unhealthy. Again, download an app to your phone for that.
Make your own meals once in a while. Not only this will save you money, but it’ll help you to see what’s really going into your body.
Eat less meat and more veggies/fruits. Go to your local market and buy some veggies/fruits, you have never tried before. I’m sure you’ll find your new favs. Eat/buy less meat. Not only it’s good for the environment, but it is good for you, too. Get a veggie burger instead of the beef one, etc.
Cut dairy. Find your new favourite milk substitute. Advice: Oat milk is really good with the tea and oatmeal/porridge; hazelnut milk is amazing on it’s own; cashew milk goes well with cereals.
Learn more about nutrition in general. It will help you to make better food choices and it will make eating healthy much easier in general, because once you understand all the chemistry behind the food and what it does to your body, you kinda don’t want to make yourself feel worse. Here are some free resources: - Human nutrition course from Alison.com - Crash course Metabolism&Nutrition: Part 1 and Part 2 - The Health Nerd’s YouTube Playlist about nutrition - What I’ve Learnt YouTube Playlist - Human nutrition course from Alison.com - Crash course Metabolism&Nutrition: Part 1 and Part 2 - The Health Nerd’s YouTube Playlist about nutrition - What I’ve Learnt YouTube Playlist
GET PHYSICALLY FIT (2-6 months)
Define your goals. Do you want to lose weight, do you want to get stronger, gain weight, be able to climb stairs without losing breath, run 5k?
Remember - you’re half-way through. Being physically fit has a lot to do with what you put into your body. So, if you fulfilled the previous step of eating healthy - you are half way through!
Make a plan. A Reasonable plan. Be honest with yourself.
Start small. Like, 5 min exercise in the morning. Or doing 10 sit ups per day. Don’t do anything overwhelming, like running 5k everyday if you haven’t run for the past 5 years.
Make sure that you kinda like what you’re doing. If you absolutely hate running - don’t do it. Hate doing sit ups in the morning? Try some yoga instead.
Explore until you find what you like. You don’t have to go to gym to get fit, especially if you hate it. Find a type of exercise, which you actually like. Maybe it’s dancing or hiking, taking your dog for a walk. Sign up for several trial lessons of various sport clubs. Ditch ‘em if you have them until you find something that you love. Stick with that.
Do the small changes in your everyday life. Stairs>Escalator, Walk>Drive, Do some squats while brushing your teeth, switch from regular desk to standing desk, etc…  Find ways to incorporate being active into your everyday life
Track your effort instead of your progress. You cannot really control your progress that much (especially if your goal was to lose weight). However, you can always control your effort. So track it instead. This will leave you more motivated. As you will be able to see that you can do more and more everyday. Whereas, if you tracked your progress, you may not always get the result you hoped for, which might demotivate you and make you upset, wanting to quit.
BEAT DEPRESSION
Do the previous 3 steps and you’re half way through.
See a therapist/doctor. Depression is an illness, requiring medical treatment. So, get it. Remember: there is absolutely no fucking shame in having a mental illness.
Get some extra support. Talk to your friends or family. Or maybe someone on the internet.
Write it out. If you don’t want to talk - write down your thoughts. It can be just as helpful. It’ll help you to understand yourself better, see problems in your thinking, etc.
Distract yourself from yourself. Get someone/something to take care of, so that you can, for a moment, stop thinking about yourself and focus on something else. E.g, get a plant, or a dog, or a fish.
Self-care day. Dedicate at least one day per week for self-care. Take yourself out, either to a museum or some fancy cafe, do some stuff you like, whatever your hobbies are, do some physical self care: bath, face mask, manicure, etc., listen to some nice music, watch a film…..
STOP PROCRASTINATION
Celebrate your victories instead of mourning over your loses. So the only thing you’ve done today was write one sentence for your 20 page essay? Amazing! Buy yourself a candy for that!! I mean, you could’ve done nothing, but you didn’t - you wrote that one sentence and that’s worth celebrating.
Do it for only 2 minutes. If there’s an important thing you’ve been putting off for a while, tell yourself that you will only spend 2 minutes on doing it. If after 2 minutes you don’t want to do it anymore, great, stop it. However, after 2min. you actually might want to do more. No pressure either way.
Track your productivity. Track how much time you’ve been productive that day. Try to increase that time by a little bit every day.
Always forgive yourself. So, it’s been a week and you’ve done nothing? Don’t sweat it. Let it go. Blaming yourself will bring you absolutely nothing. Nothing good will come out of your negativity on yourself. So stop it. Forgive yourself and start again. And again, if you need to. Never stop trying. Always pick yourself after you fall. Beating procrastination and increasing your discipline is a skill. And all skills can be build on. There is nothing in you stopping you from changing. Remember that.
LEARN HOW TO DO TAXES (1h - 1 day)
Go to google.com.
Type in: “How to do taxes *the name of the country you’re living in*”
Read the results.
GET MENTALLY STRONG ENOUGH TO MAKE PHONE CALLS
Remember that just as with beating procrastination, making phone calls is a skill. And, again, skills can be learnt.
Get a new SIM card.
Top it up.
Dial some random numbers and pretend to be a salesman, selling whatever you like.. E.g., trying to sell broadband, cable tv, trying to get people to donate for some charity… Or whatever really… Me and some friends used to pretend we’re selling kittens or wood logs. Alternatively, you can pretend that you dialed a wrong person and talk about whatever, e.g. “Hey, Jess!! You wont believe what I saw today!! *start telling a made-up story*…”
If you get uncomfortable - just drop the call. No consequences whatsoever.
Repeat until you build up your game and your phone-call anxiety starts to diminish.
SLAY THOSE BITCHES Congratulations, now you’re ready to take over the world! Got get ‘em!!

To the parents of small children who still manage to get anywhere on time, I honor your sacrifices. Today, the 4-year-old...
wanted three breakfasts
begged me to search his room for a car with a four on top
cried when I found the WRONG car with a four on top
refused to get dressed
demanded to get dressed RIGHT NOW
picked out my clothes for me
got Nutella on the clothes he picked out for me
refused to buckle his seatbelt
and demanded that I stand back while he spent ten minutes buckling it himself.
It’s a miracle that I manage to get to work on time. Ever.

october study challenge | days 22-25
here’s 4 days in one because i’ve been too busy lately writing essays and watching himym with my mom 🙄
22. Do you have an evening routine? What is it / what would it ideally be?
my evening routine is usually just watching a tv show with my mom and drinking tea. right before bed i also like to listen to some chill music!
23. What is your favourite season + why?
i kinda uniquely love every season! if i had to choose i’d say winter. it snowed a few days ago (and then it melted) but it was really nice while it lasted and i can’t wait for winter to properly arrive. but i also love autumn, and spring and summer too. i’m happy to live in a country where i get to experience all the seasons.
24. What are your best study tips?
if you start feeling you can’t focus, take a walk. listen to some music and think about whatever it is that is keeping you from focusing on studying.
do something energizing before your study session. go on a little run if you feel like it or listen to a really energizing song and jump around in your room. this helps me focus.
kinda obvious but always have something to drink. water, tea, coffee, whatever you prefer.
25. Study snacks! Got any recommendations or recipes?
i love eating any fruit like apples or pears, or something like carrots that are really calming to chew while studying! but it’s also important to sometimes treat yourself to some chocolate, i think!
