Some periods of our growth are so confusing that we don’t even recognize that growth is happening. We may feel hostile or angry or weepy and hysterical, or we may feel depressed. It would never occur to us, unless we stumbled on a book or a person who explained to us, that we were in fact in the process of change, of actually becoming larger, spiritually, than we were before. Whenever we grow, we tend to feel it, as a young seed must feel the weight and inertia of the earth as it seeks to break out of its shell on its way to becoming a plant. Often the feeling is anything but pleasant. But what is most unpleasant is the not knowing what is happening. Those long periods when something inside ourselves seems to be waiting, holding its breath, unsure about what the next step should be, eventually become the periods we wait for, for it is in those periods that we realize that we are being prepared for the next phase of our life and that, in all probability, a new level of the personality is about to be revealed.

The Initiation Well in Sintra, Portugal 

Quinta da Regaleira, the estate where this well or “inverted tower” is 27 meters deep, and just like the rest of the estate it is packed with symbolic references to cosmology, alchemy, and mythology (mostly roman and greek), and perhaps even mentions to freemasonry. The gardens are huge and constantly well-kept, and are the best and biggest part of the 2-3 hour visit.

The owner of the estate as we now know it was 1800’s Carvalho Monteiro, who on the last floor of his palace actually had a secret door that led to his alchemy lab. He commissioned the Italian architect Luigi Manini to design pretty much all there is in his estate, and Manini did a splendid job, everything being thought out in an astonishingly detailed manner. There are waterfalls from which you can walk behind the falling water, lots of grottos and manmade tunnels to explore, majestic towers,and  beautiful fountains. 

One can reach the bottom of the Initiation Well after walking for a good 5-10 minutes below ground in near absolute darkness, although they recently installed some ambient lights down there. (Source)

We are the authors of our lives and we are writing plain, prosaic stories, where the main character is ultimately shaped by indecision and safe choices, by monetary and lazy rewards, by fear and comfort, by the flow of the masses and the acceptance of others. We have forgotten how to write from the fluid of our spiritual being. We have forgotten how to dare. We have forgotten that life is gambling from your gut and ultimately going with it. There are no right choices in the complex decisions we face in our lives. But we do have the ability to choose. Oh yes, we get to choose! And sadly we have grown afraid of this most amazing gift, we are panic-stricken by it, driven to crazed grey beings. If you never learn to choose by the voice that guides you, and instead by what’s safe, certain, comfortable, affords more luxuries, you become what this world makes of you. The white page remains blank as your unused paint dries into crumbled pieces and the time fades away without meaning. Laying down color and your word on this blank page is what life is all about. And it all won’t be pretty. It all won’t work out. But if we are here to do anything at all, this is certainly it. Learn to dare and to start writing again. Don’t leave the page blank while you still got it. Nobody will want to read or hang up that painting.
