I’ve come out as gay to most of my family and my chosen family. 

I love the feeling of being a little more free. 

let me describe in detail what it felt like to be in the closet. And finally coming out.

It felt like being trapped inside a cage like some kind of gay animal. I felt like I couldn’t tell anyone, not even my parents. I was unsure about my mother, or how she would react, but I had a good feeling that my dad would accept me, no matter what my sexuality was. Generally, my father has always been a very supportive person, and I wasn’t as worried about coming out as I was with the rest of my family. On top of the pressure of coming out, I had a lot of depression going along with it. And going to school, I was terrified of what the minimal friends I had would think of me, and of losing them. So I pretended to like this boy who honestly, was an absolute jerk. I’d known him when I was younger, so I thought this would be perfect, if I made everyone think I liked this boy, I won’t have to come out, right?  Well, it did work for a good while, until the feelings and the pressure overwhelmed me so much that I decided I’d had enough. Originally, I’d joked about being gay with my sister, but I don’t exactly count that as it was more of a joke than a serious thing. The first person I really came out to was my best friend, who is also gay. I knew it would be easy to come out to her because she was also part of the LGBTQ+ community. The next person I came out to was my best friend’s mother, who was absolutely all for it. Then came the hard part, coming out to my mother. My mother has always been a bit of a stubborn person. She was always quite hard to reason with. I came out to her in the car because I was so exhausted from everything that I’d held on my back for so long, that I just blurted it out. “I’m gay!” “I like girls...” I softly shouted. She paused, and raised an eyebrow. “Okay?” “It’s fine that you like girls, Vanessa, (deadname) but I’ve told you before, you’re too young to be labeling yourself with a sexuality.” She told me. And before, I’d been doing the same thing with a different boy, pretending that I liked him to cover up my true sexuality. So when I told her that I’d lied about liking boys, she thought it was bullshit and that I was just confused. I won’t say what happened next because it’s pretty brutal, but let’s just say I cried, she told me I was being dramatic and that I needed to go to bed, and I ended up sobbing myself to sleep. It was not a good night for me to say the least. As I said before, coming out to my dad was much easier than I thought it would be; I was careful about it, first I asked him what he thought of people of the LGBTQ+ community, he said there was nothing wrong with it. Then, I asked him if he thought there was an age limit to knowing what your sexuality is. He said no. I told him, “Okay, I like girls.” He answered, “Okay, do you like girls and boys or just girls?” “Just girls”. I replied. “Okay.” He said. As I see it, my father loves me for who I am, and so does the rest of the people I’ve come out to. My mother will understand eventually, and if she doesn’t, what the fuck ever.
