How to Choose The Right Bag For You

I will always tell my girlfriends to invest in a quality bag rather than buying something like new dress each month. Why? Because once you have the bag you can dress up almost anything! So choosing the right bag is important, especially when this can be one of the biggest investments in your wardrobe. Here are my tips on how to choose the right bag for you!

Style

There are so many styles of bags going around at the moment, but the quintessential question is ‘do you need a shoulder strap?’ If you’re going to be carrying a bag for long lengths of time and you want/need the use of both your arms then opt for a cross body bag, or a shoulder bag with and an extra longer strap that you put over your shoulder. If you’re just going from A-B then a bag with normal handles should be fine.

Size

What essentials do you need to fit into your bag? Are you just carrying around an edited list of necessities; phone, wallet, keys? Then go for a small bag, you’ll love the freedom of not carrying around your life with you! If you want to also be able to keep sunglasses, crucial makeup, a little notebook and perfume in your bag then you’ll need to go up in size. And if you feel the need to keep your whole kit and caboodle in there with you, there are two options. Go for a tote bag that has a compartment inside for your important items that you can then find easily. Or my other suggestion is for two bags, go for a smaller cross body bag as well as the tote, allowing you to keep your contents separate and then you can leave the tote bag under your desk if you’re heading out after work. No one wants to take a tote out!

My main advice when it comes to the size of your bag is don’t try cramming everything in your bag, its going to wear and tear more quickly and in all honestly if you can’t open your bag and see all the contents easily, then your bag is too big, or you simply have too many things in there!

Colour

You can never go passed a black bag. But know whats missing from your wardrobe. If you have a black bag then try a neutral, either in camel or a grey. Or go with a new texture of black. Black, black, black. Dont forget it!

Hardware

Know what colour hardware you want and stick to it. A whole look can come undone if your hardware is clashing. Everything starts competing for each other and nothing stands out. If you wear both gold and silver I’m going to recommend you invest in two separate bags to live both your hard wear needs. Think this is excessive? Then choose your team!

The Price

Live within your means. But I would recommend save save save, then save that little bit more to get the best bag you can afford rather than buy a cheaper bag a year for 5 years. Your investment bag should be with you for at least 2 years, then you can put it away for a little while and bring it out again for another few years, then you can give it to your children. What to look for in a good travel backpack

The best backpacks — the ones that last the longest and stay in good condition no matter how much you abuse it — have all the following characteristics that make them durable, long-lasting, and will protect your stuff from the rain. 

Water-resistant material – While your pack does not need to be 100% waterproof, make sure your bag is made out of a semi-waterproof material so everything doesn’t get wet in a drizzle. Moreover, make sure the material won’t stay wet long and thereby get musty. I look for material that is thick but lightweight. Treated nylon fiber is really good. You should be able to pour a cup of water over it without the insides getting wet. I’m not traveling a lot during torrential downpours or monsoons, but I have been caught in small rainstorms before, and because my backpack is made out of a good material, I’ve never opened my bag to find wet clothes.

Lockable zippers – Make sure each compartment has two zippers so you can lock them together. While am not really worried about people breaking into my bag and stealing my dirty clothes in a hostel, I like locking up my bag when I am traveling. I’m always paranoid that someone is going to put something in my bag or that a grabby baggage handler in an airport is going to take my stuff.

Multiple compartments – A good bag must to have multiple compartments. This way, you can break up your belongings into smaller sections so it’s easier to access and find the stuff you need. For example, my clothes are in the main compartment of my bag, my umbrella and flips-flops in the top, and my shoes in the separated side compartment. It saves having to dig around your bag.

Padded shoulder straps – These make carrying your load more comfortable, as the weight of your pack will also be pushing downward on your shoulders. The pads will put less pressure on your shoulders and also help take pressure off your lower back. Make sure the padding is very thick and made up of a single piece of material as it will be less likely to split and thin out.

Contoured/padded back – A lumbar-shaped pack makes carrying it more comfortable, as it helps distributes weight more evenly — the same principle applies as is used in contoured chairs. It allows for a more natural arch ensure no back pain. Moreover, this type of pack creates a small space between your back and the bag, allowing air to move through and help keep you slightly cool. PURSES/TOTES

You can find a wide variety of purses in Japan just like you can anywhere else. Totes are popular because they are relatively cheap, match with any outfit, and can carry a lot of stuff. Sometimes you can even get totes as freebies wrapped literally inside magazines such as non-no or Seventeen.

Other purses that seem to be popular right now are leather and shoulder-strap purses. Small backpack-like purses are also pretty widely used.

Also feel free to go bag shopping on sites like this. (It's all in Japanese, but at least you can browse. If you want to buy, there's always the Chinese Ebay-like site Taobao, which takes payment options from around the world so long as you can navigate around the Chinese.)

SCHOOL BAGS

Middle school and high school students tend to carry School Bags. Sometimes shortened to "sukuba" which sounds like "scuba", most teenagers opt for one of these bags over a backpack. Some use both, especially kids who go to high-level schools and have to carry twice their weight in books.

There are plenty of ways to show your own style with a school bag. You can choose different colors, brands, fabrics (leather seems to be popular among fashion-conscious teenagers), and sometimes hang whatever keychains or charms you want on them, depending on your school's rules.
