Enjoying the sunset at Porto, Portugal

One of my favorite things to do in Porto is to watch the sunset. When the day is clear, there are a few options of places to enjoy this time of the day.

Jardim do Morro

My favorite as it was close to the hostel where I worked. It's also very nice to cross the river during the golden hour. The view from the city is astonishing. You have the river with the boats passing by, and the building on the hill, with the seagulls in the background. The seagulls sound is one of my favorite things in Porto!

Jardim das Virtudes

As the garden is pretty big and with a different entrance, the best thing to do is to look on the map for “Musa Virtudes”, it’s a brewery near the miradouro. There are also other bars nearby, so you can have a drink while watching the sunset, or just bring your own food and have a picnic.

Passeio da Fontainhas

Buy some drinks and food at the nearest market and walk through this street to find a nice spot and watch the sunset from an unusual point of view.

Ribeira

A great place to go for a walk during the sunset. Just walk through the riverside watching people passing by or sit in one of the bars for a drink under the sun. There is often some group playing live music and the place gets crowded during weekends. You can combine it with a walk on the other side of the river, in Vila Nova de Gaia. Just cross the bridge by its lower walkway. There is a bar called "Bar Soares" where you can find a "Porto Wine tasting" for 5 euros, with 5 different types of Porto Wine. It´s amazing!

Miradouro da Ignez

A bar with a river view, very pleasant lounge music, and an indoor ambient for the coldest rainy days.

Mirajazz

Another great bar by the river. There is always some Jazz playing, the prices are fair and the service is nice.

Guindalense Football Club

I have no idea why they call themselves a football club as they are a bar and they have nothing about the sport there. They have quite a nice view of the bridge though. They also have pretty cheap beer and food.

Daikiri Lounge bar (Vila Nova de Gaia)

If you are around Gaia, this beach club is really worth a visit. It has an inner part for the coldest days with a fantastic view of the beach and the sunset. The beverage is not that expensive for a beach club.

Gerês without a car

Yes, it is possible to visit the Natural Park of Peneda-Gerês without a car. Of course, you will need some adaptation, you need to like walking and you might not visit all of the "must go" spots from the major blogs lists. If your intention is to spend some quiet days in the middle of nature, I guarantee this place is worth it!

Gerês is a democratic place in my opinion. The main touristic attractions are well structured. For example, the Pedra Bela, Boneca, Fraga Negra, and Jucenda have fences, stairs, and parking lots nearby; the Arado, the Varzeas (Fecha de Barjas), and the Homen waterfalls are just a few steps away from the main road. But it's also possible to make some amazing trails in the middle of nature listen to the sound of birds, the water flowing everywhere, and be completely alone for long hours! I believe Gerês has space for both kinds of tourists: the more adventurous ones and the ones that like seeing nature but don't want to (or can't) walk.

For me, the most beautiful landscapes were in the middle of the way. The official viewpoints are toward the city and I prefer a more natural view with less human intervention as possible.

The weather in Gerês can be a little bit unstable. I was there during March; I went out in the morning with a blue sky and came back in the middle of the afternoon with rain, and the other way around also happened often. For this reason, it's good to have at least an impermeable jacket and a good pair of walking shoes. Some of the trails have slippery sandy parts or are made through rocks, so it's important to wear proper shoes and pay attention to your way.

Gerês is a small village, the market is ok for basic things like rice, pasta, and frozen things, but vegetable options are limited. The products are not overpriced though. The accommodations might be simple, don't expect luxury, the main goal here is to enjoy nature. The village has no hostel option but there are some simple and not that expensive hotel options.

The village has only one main street, if you go there you will find the pharmacy, ATM, handcraft stores, and restaurants. During low season there was only one restaurant open, the Lurdes Capela, so it's better to try to contact the place before going. If you want to save money on cooking by yourself or have any diet restrictions is better to buy things before going to Gerês.

Another important thing is that during the low season, there was no Uber available, only the city's cab company. I'm not sure if it changes in high season, but I would not count on that.

With all that said, let's move to some practical things:

Arriving in Gerês

I took a bus at Braga's main bus station to Gerês, with the bus company "Empresa Hoteleira do Gerês" - a blue bus that usually stops at spot number 18 (you can check this information on the screens at the bus station). The ticket cost €4,50 in 2022 and you can buy it directly with the bus driver. You can check the timetable in advance on the website, a very simple page with just the timetable, no additional information. Be aware if you are going on holiday or during the weekend because the time options reduce drastically and there is no information service at the bus station during this period. The bus will leave you on the village's main street, right in front of the Hotel Universal.

For the trails, I used an app called Komoot. It does the planning of the route when online and it also works as an offline map. If your cellphone has a good reliable GPS, it's the perfect tool! I was able to find the most untrackable ways by following the GPS position on the app (the trails are shown as dark solid lines).

It is possible to make some trails without a car, starting from the village center. You might just need a little bit more physical disposition. Here are the trails I did.

Trails that you can do without a car from Gerês Village (You have the Komoot link on each title)

Fraga Negra Viewpoint (575 m de alt.)

Half an hour walking from the village center, always going uphill. The way is well marked and most of it is made by the road.

Boneca's Viewpoint (750 m de alt.)

Forty minutes walking uphill from the Fraga Negra's viewpoint. This was one of the spots in Gerês where I enjoyed the climb more than the viewpoint itself.

Junceda's Viewpoint (915 m de alt.)

I followed the clockwise way of the Komoot circuit. It took two hours to get to the viewpoint and I could not make the end of the path because of the thicket on the way so I had to go back from where I started.

Pedra Bela's Viewpoint (829 m de alt.)

A one-hour steep and a little bit slippery trail, always going uphill (believe me, it's easier to do the way up than the down one). You can also go easily by car if you have one (it was not my case).

Arado Waterfall (750 m de alt.)

You can go there from the Pedra Bela's viewpoint by the road or following the Komoot shortcut. It's also possible to get there by car.

Poço Azul (Blue Lake)

With a total distance of 20 km from the village center, the path itself is not difficult, but it is long. You will pass by the Boneca's viewpoint and by the Arado waterfall. I followed the Komoot route by some thicket path using the cellphone's GPS. In case you have a car (or a ride), you can begin the trail at the Arado waterfall. From this point, it's an easy flat path of about 1:30h till the astonishing blue lake.

Vale do Teixeira

One of my favorite trails in Gerês. It starts at the village and passes through some breathtaking landscapes. The Komoot loop also passes by the Arado waterfall and the Pedra Bela Viewpoint. It's around 15 km with 2 hours of walking uphill and sometimes the path is not very clear so you need to follow the GPS. It's hard but definitely worth it if you like hiking and being in nature.

Sete Lagoas (Seven Lakes)

This is another one of my favorite trails in Gerês but unfortunately, it needs a car to be done. I had a ride from the hotel owner. So if you have the chance to do this (taking a cab, a tour, or a ride) I highly recommend it! The beginning of the trail is 27 km away from the village, about 1-hour driving. The reference for the beginning point is Google's location of "Bar Sete Lagoas", in Xertelo.

From this point, it's only 5 km distance each way, mostly flat. It's not a difficult trail, I just don't recommend it for people who have fear of height as it's made by the edge of the cliff.

The mountain view is incredible, we pass by some waterfalls and big rocks on the way. By the end of the trail, you have that amazing blue watercolor lagoons! If the weather is good you can swim in them.

Douro Valley Wine Tasting (without a car)

If you like wine and want to visit Douro, you can take train from São Bento station to Ferrão station. It’s a nice trip with river view in an old fashion train for only around 10 euros each way. You can check the time table and buy the tickets at the official site. I advise buying the return ticket in advance as the Ferrão Station has no machine or ticket office.

Take the 9:20 train to arrive in Ferrão by 11:30. You pass by some marvels view from the river on your way.

Arriving at the station you will have two wineries nearby: Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Quinta do Crasto. Both of them offer transfer from the station, just ask them during the reservation (mandatory).

I started my visit in Quinta Nova. I made the reservation by phone for the 12:15 wine tour. If you want just the visit or just the tasting is 16€ each. The essencial wine taste, with 3 wines and the winery guided tour cost 20€. The quinta is super nice and pleasant, it worth spending some time there. I advise calling them to make a reservation (phone number on the site).

I asked for the transfer back to the train station at 15:00, the same time I ordered the transfer to the second winery, Quinta do Crasto, to start the tour at 15:30. I found the tour a little bit hurry and there was not much to see. Maybe because I sad I was on the other winery before, the guide explained everything fast. The winery is not as beautiful as the first one, but this tasting was better.

The guide explained all about each one of the 5 wines: 1 rosè, 3 reds and one Porto wine. I also had 2 olive oils and some toasted almonds made on the Quinta. Everything was amazing!! This experience was a little more expensive than the first one (€29) but I think it worth it because of the tasting.

I had a lot of time after the tasting to enjoy the view from the pool and take the train back to Porto at 18:22.

I would made some changes on the plans: I would stay a little longer on Quinta Nova and try to get the 16 o’clock tour in Quinta do Crasto. If you have budget I strongly recommend to stay one night in Quinta Nova. The place is amazing.

Gerês sem carro?

Sim! É possível visitar o parque natural Peneda-Gerês sem carro. Claro que será necessária alguma adaptação e não vai ser possível visitar TODAS as atrações “imperdíveis” listadas em blogs de viagem. Mas se a sua intenção é passar uns dias tranquilos em meio a natureza, te garanto que vale muito a pena passar uns dias nesse paraíso.

Gerês é um destino democrático. Os principais pontos turísticos parecem ter estrutura demais: os miradouros da Pedra Bela, da Boneca e da Fraga Negra e da Jucenda tem cercas, escadas e estacionamento; a Cascata do Arado é possível chegar de carro até bem próximo, subir umas escadinhas e ficar olhando só de cima aquela queda d’água maravilhosa…as Cascatas do Homem e do Tahiti podem ser vistas diretamente da estrada sem nem precisar de trilha…E a maioria das pessoas por quem passei vestiam calça jeans e sobretudo. Mas também é possível fazer lindas caminhadas no meio da natureza, onde é preciso um pouco mais de planejamento e preparo físico, ouvindo o barulho de pássaros, muita água correndo e algumas vezes estar completamente sozinho por horas. Acredito que tenha espaço pros dois no Gerês: os aventureiros e os confortáveis.

Na minha opinião, as paisagens mais bonitas foram de trilhas até chegar ao ponto de interesse. Por exemplo, no caminho pro Miradouro da Boneca encontrei um espaço com pedras claras e vista pro vale que me fizeram parar por muitos minutos e desejar acampar naquele cantinho. E ao chegar no Miradouro da Boneca gastei apenas alguns segundos e já estava pronta pra ir embora. A vista do miradouro é na direção da cidade, enquanto que o outro lugar que encontrei tem vista pra natureza, sem nenhuma intervenção humana no caminho (mais meu estilo pessoal).

O tempo no Gerês pode ser um pouco instável. Estive lá em Março e saía de manhã do hotel com céu azul e retornava no meio da tarde com quase chuva, e vice versa. Por isso é bom ter pelo menos uma capa de chuva ou casaco impermeável e um bom sapato para caminhadas. Algumas das trilhas que fiz tinham parte bastante escorregadias por ser piso de areia, ou eram feitas por caminhos de pedras. Por isso é importante ter um bom calçado e muita atenção, principalmente se for fazer a trilha sozinh@. Uma coisa que achei bem legal foi que encontrei muitos pontos ao longo de algumas trilhas com fontes naturais, o que era ótimo para reabastecer a água.

Gerês é uma pequena vila, não venha esperando grandes estruturas. É um local para curtir a natureza. Pode ser que o sinal de celular seja fraco (apesar do meu da Vodafone funcionar muito bem até no meio das trilhas, longe de tudo) e não ter televisão em algumas acomodações. O mercado da vila é bem simples e com pouca variedade, tive dificuldade de me abastecer pro almoço. O frango era caríssimo (8 euros/kg quando fui) mas algumas outras coisas tem o preço comparável à cidade (o preço do ovo e dos legumes era comparável ao Pingo Doce, principal rede de mercado de Portugal) e algumas coisas eram até mais baratas (talvez por vir da Espanha) como o Milka (rs) que custa 1 euro aqui enquanto nas grandes cidades de Portugal não se encontra por menos de 1,50.

Na baixa temporada só havia um restaurante aberto, o Lurdes Capela. Acho que ao fim de semana tiveram mais opções abertas. Não cheguei a comer no restaurante, mas ouvi que as opções de prato não são muitas e os preços não são baratos. Essas coisas é bom ter em mente antes de vir. Pode-se comprar algumas coisas em Braga ou simplesmente abrir a mente e se adaptar ao que tem por alguns dias.

Dito isso, vamos à prática sobre o caminho das pedras:

Chegando ao Gerês

Peguei o ônibus da Flixbus no Porto para a cidade de Braga, de onde peguei o ônibus da Empresa Hoteleira do Gerês (custa €4,50 - valor de 2022 - e compra na hora com o motorista). Fui num dia de feriado, por isso o escritório na estação estava fechado. Foi difícil conseguir as informações e os horários são reduzidos. Recomendo evitar fazer a vigem domingos e feriados. Os horários podem ser encontrados na internet digitando “empresa hoteleira do Gerês horário autocarro” ou qualquer coisa assim. É uma página bem simples, com poucas informações. O autocarro sai da estação central de Braga, a mesma em que se chega com a Flixbus, na baia 18. Quando peguei o autocarro foi bastante pontual. A paragem no Gerês fica bem na rua principal, em frente ao Hotel Universal. Durante o período em que estive não havia Bolt ou Uber disponível, apenas os taxis da própria cidade.

Para fazer as trilhas usei o app Komoot. Ele faz o planejamento do percurso (quando está online) e depois funciona como um mapa offline. Se você tem um celular com GPS confiável, é uma ferramenta perfeita! Consegui encontrar os caminhos mais fechados seguindo a localização do GPS.

É possivel fazer diversos trilhos sem carro a partir do centro da Vila do Gerês, tudo depende da disposição que se tem para caminhar.

Trilhos sem carro a partir do centro da Vila do Gerês

Miradouro da Fraga Negra (575 m de alt.)

Meia hora caminhando a partir do centro de Gerês, ladeira a cima.

Miradouro da Boneca (750 m de alt.)

Mais uns 40 minutos de subida a partir do Fraga Negra. Achei o percurso mais bonito do que o miradouro em si. Foi no caminho para a Boneca que encontrei o espaço com as pedras que parei por um bom tempo.

Miradouro da Pedra Bela (829 m de alt.)

É possível chegar a pé a partir do centro da Vila do Gerês por uma trilha um pouco escorregadia e bem íngreme. Fiz a subida em 1 hora (e foi uma hora só de subida, sem trechos planos).

Cascata do Arado (750 m de alt.)

É possível chegar a pé a partir da Pedra Bela, pela estrada ou cortando caminho pelo trilho. Fica à escolha de cada um. Também é possível chegar de carro pela estrada até bem próximo da cascata, passando pela ponte de pedra. Depois é só subir umas escadinhas ou andar por dentro do rio.

Poço Azul

Foram 20 km ida e volta a partir do centro da Vila do Gerês. O percurso em si não é dificil, só é bem longo se começar a partir do centro de Gerês. A pior parte é a 1 hora de subida até o Miradouro da Pedra Bela. A partir dai, o percurso é feito quase todo pela estrada ou por caminho de terra (na ida, o app me mandou cortar um caminho que poderia ter sido feito pela estrada entre o Miradouro da Pedra Bela e a Cascata do Arado. Eu gosto de andar fora da estrada, mas o caminho estava bem fechado e só encontrei seguindo o GPS. Na volta fui pela estrada porque estava sozinha e o tempo estava ficando chuvoso, achei que seria menos arriscado). Se estiver de carro, pode começar a caminhada pela Cascata do Arado. O caminho a partir dai é bem leve e deve dar em torno de 1h a 1:30h de caminhada plana até o Poço Azul, com um pequeno percurso entre as pedras quando chega próximo ao rio.

Vale do Teixeira

Fizemos uma grande trilha começando na Vila do Gerês em direção ao Vale do rio Teixeira. Passamos por paisagens lindas seguindo os trilhos do app Komoot. Passamos pelo Abrigo Teixeira, beiramos o rio Arado/Teixeira até a Cascata do Arado e voltamos pelo Miradouro da Pedra Bela. Foram longos 15km de muita subida mas também com vistas deslumbrantes. É preciso ter condicionamento físico, mas definitivamente vale a pena.

Sete Lagoas (necessita de carro)

É uma pena que esse trilho não possa ser feito sem carro a partir da Vila do Gêres pois é muito bonito! Junto com o Vale do Teixeira, é um dos meus favoritos até agora. O início da trilha fica a 27 km, 1 hora de carro a partir do centro da vila. Pode-se buscar a localização no Google por "Bar Sete Lagoas", em Xertelo.

Aproveitei a oferta do dono da Pousada onde estou voluntariando para nos levar atá lá. A partir do inicio da trilha são menos de 5 km para cada lado, praticamente planos, com trechos curtos de subida e descida. O nível de dificuldade não é alto, porém não recomendaria esse trilho para pessoas que tenham medo de altura pois o caminho é bem na beira do penhasco.

A vista para as montanhas é linda! E passamos por alguns corregos e altas pedras no caminho. A cor da água nas Sete Lagos é daquele mesmo tom de azul esverdeados de qualquer rio no Gerês, com a diferença aqui de serem pequenos lagos em sequência. É muito bonito mesmo!

O que me intriga no Gêres é o fato das intervenções humanas estarem tão nítidas nos principais pontos turisticos do Parque. Nas Setes Lagoas, por exemplo, existe uma barragem da EDP, um muro de concreto pouco antes da primeira lagoa...Não tira de todo a beleza do lugar, mas para mim é um pouco chocante que permitam uma obra dessas num parque florestal.

Cascata de Várzeas, Cascata do Tahiti ou Cascata de Fecha de Barjas (necessita de carro)

Outro ponto muito conhecido no Gêres e tive a oportunidade de ir de carona. Fica no caminho para o Xertelo e muito perto da estrada, sendo o acesso super simples através de uma escada. Com um pouco de disposição pode ser feita a partir do centro da Vila. São 12 km que podem ser seguidos através da estrada (pode-se tentar pegar carona no caminho também, principalmente na alta temporada quando existem mais pessoas passando pela estrada).
