Final Project | Show Me What You Know
vimeo
Description of your concept:
I’ve created a vibrant video clip in order to provide the viewer with a sub-conscious, brain stimulating experience. The “person” dancing in the clip resembles my passion and appreciation of dance. I specifically selected this person because I have a reoccurring fascination with silhouettes and stick figures in my works. I noticed my love for these types of figures has to do with influencing a viewer to characterize the person freely, this allows them to associate their own feelings and attributes upon the figure. I then decided to place the figure in its own type of cognitive realm, or mind, meaning my choice of “place” was a brain. I chose the brain as my favorite (theoretical) place because of my love of knowledge. I also thought this would contribute to the sub-conscious experience I was seeking. The versatility of the brain would allow me to depict my imagination and creativity throughout the video’s scene in a form of visual art. Then for my favorite “thing” I chose to incorporate the Twilight zone just because I was always so fascinated by the shows introduction as a child. I thought it was extremely mind opening. For this reason I placed the introduction of the Twilight zone throughout my video creation in order to make the viewers feel intrigued and slightly mysterious.
What formal elements did you use
Ive used Line, shape, color, value, space, balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, and pattern
How does your work exemplify what you have learned in Intro to Digital Art
I have exemplified just about every digital tactic I have learned in Digital art, I utilized photoshop cutting out a floating sphere which traveled through the video plane, creating a mashup or remix with different clips, hand drawn illustrator (GIF like) animation which I learned to create from our GIF creations, changing color saturation and editing certain clips on photoshop, and general Premiere Pro knowledge to assemble the entire video.
Summarize your experiences with Digital Art in this course
This class has been nothing short of a challenge for me, if I had to compare my computer skills to anyone prior to tis course it would have to be my grandma because I had very little knowledge of how any type of digital art, let alone computer programs worked. I struggled with this course more than any course I have ever taken because it forced me to strengthen my greatest weakness, technology. Today, I am so happy I pushed through because I've learned so many things that I will continue to use for the rest of my life.
What were your favorite & least favorite projects & why?
My favorite project was project 4 because it was the easiest and most enjoyable for me to learn. I had always watched video clips on the internet and wondered how they edited the videos to look so good and after learning how to do it I have a great appreciation for video editors and animators. My least favorite was project 1 simply because It was my first time using a computer in that type of creative way.
Which project(s) were most successful & why?
I believe this project, (project 5) and the one prior (project 4) were most successful because I will continue to utilize video making throughout my career and life. I already find myself wanting to create random vacation videos and marketing videos utilizing premiere. I think these projects were the best for my type of visual creativity.
What did you learn about digital art this semester?
I learned that digital art is HARD. Every piece I have made has taken me days and relentless hours of work staring at a computer screen till my eyes can't handle it anymore. I learned to appreciate the people who make digital art a part of their career because it takes a very special technologically inclined brain with extreme patience.
What more would you like to learn about digital art?
I would like to learn more of the shortcuts of editing videos and graphics, as I dove deeper into my digital art creation, I began to search youtube videos to learn how to do simple things like make objects move fluently across the screen, every time I researched a new tutorial such as this, I would learn how to do new short cuts for example pressing C to cut a video.
How has working with a computer as your medium enhanced your creative practice?
My work can be much neater when created from a computer, it also can be seen, and appreciated easier through the use of the internet.
What did you learn about the process of creating works of art?
I learned that the process can be extremely frustrating and lengthy to a newcomer, but is well worth the hassle because it is a work that will never tarnish such as a painting or drawling it can be stored and shared for centuries.
Did you find in-class critique meetings to be a helpful tool for this course? Why or why not?
Yes, I thought it was extremely helpful to see what my classmates were doing and how they explained their process. Often times I could learn from their pieces/ their creation tactics. I also loved getting feedback from different people with different perspectives.
Did you find Spark to be a helpful tool for this course? Why or why not?
Yes I liked having a visual accumulation of my creation process. I also loved the image collection aspect of spark because all of the images were great quality. I always tend to look up images as inspiration either way, so being able to put multiple on the screen side by side was very helpful.
Did you find Flipgrid to be a helpful tool for this course? Why or why not?
Yes I felt better connected with my virtual classmates, there were times that I’d come into critiques feeling more comfortable because I'm surrounded by familiar faces. I also likes how it allowed us to practice our verbal skills rather writing which was a refreshing change.
What suggestions if any do you have for improving this course?
Flexibility with canvas submissions. At least half credit when an assignment was posted on time on something like flip grid or tumblr but was neglected to be submitted to canvas.
What does your completed tumblr portfolio for this course express about you as a student & a creative?
I think it expresses that I like to use a predominantly pastel color scheme, that I am a happy person who enjoys classic music, and that I am hardworking and well organized.
What grade do you expect on your final project & why?
I expect a 100% because every piece I turn in is my best work. I’ve put days and countless hours of work into this project and I’m really happy to see how far I have come. I have learned so much and will continue to learn now that I'm more confident in using computers. I worked very hard on approaching the Person, Place, and Thing concept in an extremely creative and theoretical way.
What grade do you expect in this course & why?
I would love to expect an A in this course because I want to get the reassurance that hard work pays off. Half way through the semester I was contemplating having to drop the course because I simply couldn't not keep up with the pace and computer skills. When I drove to visit the professor during her office hours I left inspired to make a change. I made this class my number one priority and learned to love seeing my tumblr portfolio grow and my pieces get better and better. I just want to be able to say I did it I made the greatest comeback in grade history. haha

Digital Exercise #6 | Compare & Share Google Arts & Culture Face Match.

-In the text area below DISCUSS your experience using the app in relation to the article’s
As I read through the articles, I found it fascinating that they claim “If you have spent any time at all on Instagram or Facebook or Twitter in the past couple of weeks, you have seen this trend going viral.” To be honest I have not seen this trend anywhere but, I sure am happy I have been introduced to it. In December, Google introduced its Arts & Culture app. This app allows you to take a selfie with your phone and find your own museum doppelgänger. The article claimed that this app became the most downloaded app in the iTunes store. I believe its a very cool app but to be honest I'm shocked at the success of the app, only because the average person isn't all that fascinated in art history.
-Discuss the work of art matched to your selfie that you resonate with most.
I resonate most with Dagmara Rybak’s Geometric Girl, created in 2017. I believe I resonate with this piece the most because it was created by young talent. Being a studio art major is not an easy. It is a very competitive field and very hard to get your name/work out there. Seeing this young artist providing us with such a beautiful acrylic painting is inspiring. It makes me want to do the same. I also loved her utilization of color. My works often utilize color, predominately pastel colors and abstraction which we also see in Dagmara’s work.
-Provide the history that you feel is most interesting about that work.
Geometric Girl, by Dagmara Rybak, 2017, Acrylic on canvas.
I found it interesting that this work was created by a student and shown in the Student Artworks Foundation exhibition entitled 'Body and Physicality in the Works of Emerging Artists. You're able to Look What Young Emerging Artists See and do. The exhibition features selected works by young talented artists associated with the Student Artworks Foundation. A frequent theme of paintings is body and physique of human. Its interesting to see how each artists get their inspirations by observing the surrounding world through every day life and how they differ.
-ANSWER: Do you feel your match reveals something about you that you hadn’t seen before? Yes or no? Elaborate.
Yes, I believe it reveals my drive for success. Ever since I was a kid I strived to be a girl boss, in other words an extremely successful, hard worker. I always looked up to my father and how hard he has worked his entire life. Although I still find myself pondering what exactly I want to do or how I will use my creativity in the work field. I believe this reveals that I can get my work out there just like this student can.

Project #4: Video = A Time- Based Media Remix
vimeo
-What type of commentary you are attempting to convey?
Im trying to convey the materialistic, money seeking needs of the average American.
-Why?
I chose to convey this theme because all people can relate to the emotional rollercoaster of the relentless pursuit of wealth and success. I also wanted the encouraging and wise words of Prince ea, one of my favorite inspirational speakers/ Poets to be heard. I want people to enjoy its comedy but also receive an important message, that being to make the best of what you have, love one another, and to stop feeding into the chaos of the world.
-What techniques have you used to achieve that goal?
I have used symbols/ words (like dollar bills, pac-man, and taxes) symbols of American revolution and funding. I shifted from a materialistic, comical, and dark tone to an empowering, colorful, and loving tone. This gave viewers a juxtaposition of wealth outlooks.
-Elements of art- Line, shape, color, value, and space.
-Principles of design- Balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity.
-Why these & how- I used these in order to have a successful, enjoyable video. The video made artistic sense, and grasped the relentless pursuit of wealth and success in America. First, I started with a pac-man concept, I wanted to start the video immediately requesting money. The “insert coin” and pac-man concept is for-shadowing the clip where pac-man conveniently eats dollar signs. This part, I specifically created on illustrator in the similar way we created gifs, slide by slide. Pac-man alone implied just about all the elements and principles above. My color concept towards the beginning was arcade inspired containing lots of primary colors and black. Eventually I strayed away from dark colors and utilized pastels and whites when Prince Ea began to speak. This alluded to his positive, and woke worldly views.

Medium- multimedia installation, black and white
a) In your opinion, what is the role of video art today? I believe the role of video art today is mostly entertainment. It employs the conventional idea of television, but I believe the difference is in the context. Television is a more literal it makes you feel a particular way, whereas video art allows you to dive deeper into the subconscious, it is more creative, abstract and thought provoking
.b) What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists works?
I immediately connected with Christian Marclay’s Telephone because it gave me the same feeling of phone anxiety I get whenever someone calls me or the anticipation of making a call, whereas his chalkboard piece made me connect more with the creation aspect, similar to the way we created our GIF’s Marclay shows the creation of multiple drawings on a chalkboard overtime with a reputation of photos jumbles together to make a video. Shana Moulton’s pieces immediately caught by attention with the use of color. She uses a lot of vibrant pastels which is a color scheme I typically use.
c) What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
Marclay carried out a black and white scheme in both of his clips, they tend to show the concept of time, his most famous piece is even called “The Clock” I noticed he likes to show things in a timely way, the chalkboard fills up over time, and the transitions of a phone call over time all things were being exaggerated. Whereas Moulton’s pieces were very disturbing and overwhelming. Both of her videos make me feel uncomfortable, yet they are slightly comical in a way.

Project # 3 | Digital Painting & Gif Art = Color, Paint, Mood & the Abstract.
-Describe the color, paint & mood you have selected to explore & why
Color- I stuck to my usual, favorite color scheme that being pastels, I love this choice because I feel like they are very happy and they are calming unlike other loud bright pigmented color. Its very muted so you're able to look at the GIF longer without anxiety or straining your eyes.
Paint- I utilized the paint outline of shapes offered on adobe illustrator. I think the jagged, streakiness of the shapes in the background really give you a feel of abstraction and the use of a paint medium.
Mood- The overall mood is very vibrant and happy. I feel like the use of familiar patterns like the dog spots, and the ice-cream sprinkles give people happiness because most people’s connotations with these two things are good ones. I personally love dogs and ice-cream. As said earlier, the muted pastel colors also contribute to an overall relaxed happy, organized mood.
Why these- I chose the color, painting technique, and happy mood because I wanted to portray how I feel (of course most of the time) that being happy, colorful, organized, and I'm not a very in your face person. I have a strong, funny, kind, happy personality and I feel like I've captivated that in this works.
-Describe the abstract techniques you have incorporated & why.
Abstract techniques- nonrepresentational concept, surrealism, expressionism
Why these- I used non representationalism in order to not be too representational, this way the artist can think of their reaction without having a forced meaning. I used surrealism by allowing ones unconscious to express itself, I feel as though surrealism is dream like in the same way this work can be. I used expressionism by expressing my mood using the tactics I spoke of above, I feel like I have expressed my sense of contentment.
-What elements of art & principles of design have you incorporated in your overall design? Describe the How & Why?
Elements of art- Line, shape, color, value, texture, and space.
Principles of design- Balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity.
Why these & how- I used these in order to have a successful piece that made artistic, and creative sense. I realized I used these things naturally, as artists should. I didn't necessarily plan to use the ones I did, it just happened. First, I started with my pastel color concept and created stripes which I eventually decided was too symmetrical so I added texture by adding paint-like white outlines. I added central, circular movement by adding triangles that rotated spirally towards the middle. I then added patterns to give it depth, and tunnel/ suction like hoses that provided more depth, concept, and balance. All steps came with time and artistic concept.

Assignment #4: Individual Research on Abstract Art & Artists.
Artist: Jean Arp
Title: The Red List
Year: 1945
Medium: Sculpture
Themes: Abstract, Surreal, Movement

Artist: Jean Arp
Title: Untitled (Collage with Squares Arranged according to the Laws of Chance)
Year: 1917
Medium: Collage
Themes: Abstract, texture

Artist: Frank Stella
Title: Feneralia, From the Imaginary places series
Year: 1995
Medium: Color stencil, lithograph, etching, aquatint, relief, collagraph
Themes: Abstract, DaDa

Artist: Frank Stella
Title: Firuzabad
Year: 1970
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Themes: Abstract, color, modern art
a) Why did you select these artists?
I selected these artists because they caught my attention, the use of color, and the use of non representative art really speaks to me, let alone all viewers because they allow you to write your own story, and connect in your own way. The cleanliness and the prices is admirable.
b) What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists’ works?
With jeans works I feel very comfortable I connect with the cleanliness and exactness of the piece because I am very OCD and I feel like every shape or every angle is in its place. With Franks work the color speaks to me I love color and the sense of a happy, anxiety when looking at works. His pieces gave me an overwhelming sense of happiness and its loud with I love.
c) What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
Both artists are very abstract. And both are seen as DaDa artists meaning they provide the viewer with a satirical, nonsensical nature. All works provide this for me in different ways. Jean’s work is very simple and nonsensical in a way you can define the works for yourself in whatever way you are affected, her work is almost too plain. Whereas Frank’s work is very satirical it provides an almost funny, bright, loud, sense of self, his work is almost too much.
d) What are the formal & conceptual elements evident in each of your selected artists’ works?
Both works are allowing you to conceptualize them freely due to there being no predominant meaning in either of them. The movement and simplicity in Jean’s work is great for introverts, its quiet, simple, and subtle and her monochromatic use of color gives a very relaxed sense. Whereas Frank’s allows its viewers that the artist must have a lot to say his work is loud in a sense of color. The multitudes of color give you so much different feelings, and connotations in a way you almost have a sense of anxiety.

Digital Exercise #4 | Altering & Abstracting an Image.
- I have created this abstract image because I thought the image was super cool and colorful, a photographer friend of mine took this and I thought it would be very unique to alter it . I added a paint edit to the picture to give it stroke like texture then a colorful washer and colorful drops of detergent to add to the overall theme and use of color/theme.

artist: David Szakaly

medium: modernism
a) In your opinion, what is the role of GIF art today?
I believe that today gifs are used as a form of marketing, Its fair to say when you are browsing the ever-growing internet you are constantly being marketed to, being told to buy this and purchase that. Thanks to its eye catching movement and color, Gifs grab your attention unlike your average advertisement, therefore making them a more successful marketing technique than a motionless digital image/ Propaganda.
b) What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artist’s works?
With Ann’s works I feel intrigued and relaxed, her “clementines and bugs” piece was funny it reminded me of how places like burger king depict their burgers so amazing and delicious in commercials but when you get one its not as flattering as they depict it to be. Her “Provençal romance” piece was calm and relaxed it reminded me of a bath and body works or spa advertisment. Davids pieces are actually the opposite his use of modernism is almost hypnotic in a sense both of them were extremely stimulating. I made the personal connection of star wars with his piece through the references of black and almost technology like feeling.
c) What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
With Ann’s works I feel intrigued and relaxed, The use of cinegraph allows your eyes to go exactly where the artist influences movement. With her “clementines and bugs” piece, the juxtaposition of the beautifully depicted clementines with the concept of bugs inside of them is comical and ironic. Whereas the piece called “Provençal romance” she takes a picture that is already evoking a calm relaxed mentality and stimulates our senses even more by adding a soothing fire drifting back and fourth. Davids pieces are the opposite of Ann’s they are loud and you can't help but to stop and watch. His use of modernism is almost hypnotic in a sense both of them were extremely stimulating. He uses a lot of repetition and constant movement that makes it hard to look away and almost hypnotizes you I could imagine he had a real headache after creating his 180815 piece.

Project #2: Digital Collage - Adventures in Surrealism.
Describe the theme you have selected & why? I have selected the theme of social media & the web because I lack in this area and I believe that our advancements in technology are corrupting our social, and educational abilities. Today, people are too attached to their cell phones. From social media, to texting and apps people need to learn how to unplug. They need to learn to find more value in a uninterrupted, meaningful, conversation rather than obsessing over their followers and likes. They need to pick up a book or actually do the math problem rather search the web for an instant answer. They need to learn to smile at a low battery for it only means you're one step closer to humanity.
Which Surrealist techniques you have incorporated & why. I have incorporated changing the scale of an object, and joining objects together. I believe that by making my books larger, and having humans plugged into the side walks it will give a deeper meaning and grasp the attention of viewers. The books are comparable in scale to the building and have been carved into a house to represent our need to live in the world of reality and to educate ourselves without taking shortcuts. The silhouettes of people on the streets is to show that people are too plugged into technology and their cellphones to be present.
What elements of art & principles of design have you incorporated in your overall design? Why? I have incorporated the elements and principles of line, color, space, contrast, rhythm, balance and unity. I used line mostly in the sidewalks which meet in the middle of the piece as if you're seeing a busy street corner. This same concept gives the piece space, balance, and unity by giving the piece a perception of depth. We have a foreground with the cell phone thats googling “how to live” a middle ground with the citizens and the buildings and a background with the reference to the theoretical “cloud” These all come together with pastel colors and vibrance to give unity to the piece allowing all the elements to work together to convey one meaningful piece.

Project #1: Create your own Logo / Avatar & Header (to design & personalize your online portfolio) = the art of visual identity.
-My newly created header is a pastel record themed piece. The two represent who I am because I collect records growing up my father always told me I had an “old soul” and its true. I also believe it has a happy/corky feel. I hope others see me as open, happy, and kind.
-What elements of art & principles of design have you incorporated in your overall design?
Ive incorporated a colorful, pastel piece. Ive used the element of balance in my background to evenly distribute the way your eye flows through the piece.
-How will your newly customized online portfolio work with what you will be creating in Digital Art to further express your individuality?
I hope im able to potentially work more with brick walls or potentially album covers I think I will continue to use pastels to the best of my ability.

Assignment #2: Individual Research on Collage Art & Artists
Artist 1 -Georges Braque
(above) Georges Braque’s, Guitar "Program statue d’epouvante” (La Guitare, original tittle),1913; Media: charcoal, collage, gouache, paper
The themes that are evident in this still life by Braque, are synthetic cubism, and dada. His use of synthetic cubism is clear in the fact that this collage is flattened out with no view of three dimension. Also his use of newspaper print is revolutionary for Synthetic cubism. A use of Dada is seen through his strange seemingly worthless objects and iconography.
(above) Georges Braque’s “The Round Table” 1929; Media: oil, sand, and charcoal on canvas
The themes that are evident in this piece are Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. We see his use of cubism through his use of piecing together dissimilar components for example his use of sand with paint. We see his use of Abstract Expressionism through his use of color, composition, and emotion.
Artist 2- Rosalyn Drexler
(above) Rosalyn Drexler’s, “Put It This Way” 1963; Media: Paint, Paper on canvas
The themes that are evident in this piece are Abstract Expressionism through her use in color, Pop art due to her culture-related motifs.
(above) Rosalyn Drexler, “Rub Out” 1982; Media; acrylic and paper collage on canvas
The themes that are evident in this piece are Abstract Expressionism through her use in color, Pop art due to her culture-related motifs.
A) Why did you select these artists?
-I selected these artists because I felt that Georges Braque gave a historically rooted collage perspective considering he was one of the first artists that practiced and created the concepts of collage. I then selected Rosalyn Drexler because I felt like her work is a modernized concept of collage and that she is able to practice this art concept thanks to Georges.
b) What kinds of personal connections can you make to your selected artists works?
- My personal connections with these artists works are very different with Georges Barque I feel that his pieces are Dada or have less meaning, I just connected with his creativity and his use of balance and texture. On the other hand Rosalyns work is making social issues of today unavoidable with her powerful use of colors. I found myself shocked of the gruesome activities she depicts, yet believe they are necessary to call action and make these issues known.
c) What are the subjects, issues, and themes important to each of your selected artists?
-With Braque the subjects and issues presented simply aren't there this is why I found his pieces Dada. They are easy to look at and allow you to conceptualize your own response. His use of synthetic cubism is a theme that makes many of his works very flat, and his colors are rather dull. Whereas With Rosalyns pieces the themes we continuously see is Abstract Expressionism and Pop art. Her subjects are typically of “everyday life” as she explains when the sad part is our every day life is corrupted and she shines light on those worldly issues. Her use of color, and quirkiness is unlike anything I've seen it is attention grabbing.
d) What are the formal & conceptual elements evident in each of your selected artists works?
-The form Rosalyns work is more three dimensional than Braque’s. Although it still has that flat collage feel. I also feel as though Rosalyn’s work provides more space allowing all your focus on the objects in the picture whereas Braque's work is busier, there is more texture and layers to his work. He provides us with a sense of a very flat foreground background unlike Rosalyn’s paintings that have a prominent foreground with just a flat color as the background to avoid loosing focus on the issue she chooses to shed light on.

Digital exercise #2: Watch & Complete Adobe Photoshop Tutorials
Adobe Photoshop is used for endless digital creativity. In photoshop you are able to take photographs and rework them in any way you desire. You can adjust tones and colors to enhance the photographs effectiveness, and to set the overall tone of the piece. You can overlap photos to create a new creative work, and so much more. With photoshop the options are endless.
During these exercises I’ve learned how to put filters on photos, to adjust lighting, saturation, and other effects. I’ve learned how to erase and blend distracting features in a photograph likes poles, I’ve learned how to blur things and focus others. I learned how to add layers and how to add font to my liking. I also learned how to layer a photo with another so that you can for example take a dull sky out and replace it with another. I also learned how to make shapes ombré or fade. These exercises taught me a lot of useful tactics.
