i am always thinking about the fact that hunting does next to nothing for the present non-fatal victims but instead protects some idealised future victim from the believed inevitable encroachment of the 'them' hunters manage to spot within its knowing or unknowing existence outside of the status quo of normal human life again. this woman is still going to jail for killing her husband whether or not 'she' did it, whether or not the incompetent state manages to righteously solve the crime or not, and whether or not our hunters manage to eradicate the evil in question

fascinating all around. the implication that bobby, and by proxy (sam and) dean* were a source of authority for most hunters, that as something that's changed in entirely different ways with their respective times away from hunting (sam as closer to the nuclear vs dean as in purgatory), what that means for the patriarchal structure and masculine roles both as they exist synonymous with hunting as well as what they're established within the scene ("forgot he was a hugger.") wrt what those roles were and what they have become proxy garth, who is usually seen as less-than masculine for his expression of emotion and his relative inadequacy/'weird' techniques on The Job. the fact that he's assumed his current position in sam and dean's (namely dean's) absence is telling of the uniqueness of their circumstances wrt bobby's death, "it was a weird time." ie. garth, as Less Than as he is, is/was the next best option but is now encroaching upon sam and dean's masculine roles and, by proxy, where they exist atop the patriarchal structure proxy hunting authority.
#i could've sworn i had posted about this during my last chronological rewatch. but i guess not ?#but anyway this + looking at the dean-bobby-sam dynamic in tandem is so interesting#because we know well and truly that dean and bobby exist above sam on account of the authority they usually have over him and his autonomy#vs the lack of authority sam has regarding theirs as it is established mainly over seasons two to seven through#dean and bobby's relationship‚ how they refer to sam within it (with staunch infantalisation and/or relative objectification**)#and how sam exists proxy it (able to be excluded on their say-so. and is. often. unless something about sam's masculine role changes#ex. soulless!sam's relationship change with hunting) (of course there is also sam as having different hunting/familial ideals#and existing as a monstrous and subverting body of hunting that which his liminality affects his patriarchal/familial role)#so to observe this interaction with garth is interesting because sam here exists as an extension of dean's role aka above garth#but there's also of course that level of reverence towards bobby's specific hunting role re: giving advice#i lost my train of thought. whatever. edit: i remembered#which part of garth's emulation of bobby within his own grief of bobby + sam and dean's absences (it kind of hearkens back to#season two in john's death and sam's guilt about their relationship within his grief -> season four in both dean's absence#in pursuit of dean's respect as an equal‚ sam resorts to an emulation of john and dean's hunter ideals within specific circumstances#and it IS hearkened as part of the strangeness and metamorphosis of his character during the arc)#which is where the disrespect comes in. it's like a parroting of bobby's hunting and masculine caricature but through his corpse#and it presents as an encroachment upon both their patriarchal structure as it exists along with the familial dynamic‚ which garth is#knowingly excluded from. this also of course adds to the later exploration of this change as part of garth's intrapersonal exploration#through his grief of bobby and what how he's dealing with it means for the unseen relationship between him and bobby#it also widens the scope of bobby's patriarchal role to other patriarchal structures#*it's imperative to note in light of ^ that the conflict regarding garth's emulation of bobby exists mainly between himself and dean#both in regards to dean's actual existence as patriarch next to bobby thus making garth's encroachment upon bobby's position a foiled one#that bypasses sam's role as an extension of dean rather than directly relating to garth and his amulation of bobby#dean tells both sam and garth to shut up‚ garth cuts dean off when he's speaking‚ the cowboy (ranger) garb‚ dean snatches#bobby's cap from garth's head‚ “that's not how you wear it‚” / “you're not bobby. you're never gonna be bobby.”#“bobby belonged to all of us. i'm just taking what he taught...” etc. there's a pretty explicit competition of authority vs an emulation#**objectification as far as dean's idealisation of Sammy proxy himself‚ his actions that enforce this and bobby's subscription to this pov#8.06#adflatus

#“well i guess people change don't they?” is killing me because he attempted to kill crowley in mrs. tran's body like four episodes ago#anyway fascinating conversation that i think leads right into 8.09#“every relationship i have ever had has gone to crap at some point but the one thing i can say about benny: he has never let me down.”#in a 'why wasn't i Enough to Change For' kind of way for sam on two occasions—s4 and 7.03/7.07#like it genuinely does speak to the lack of respect dean holds for sam and sam as a person detached from himself in the sense that#because in the same way season four sam asks dean to trust him on a level that ensures sam's ability to make his own decisions about himsel#and his relationships he asks dean to not trust amy but to trust him... and does dean Does Not. just as he didnt trust or respect sam in s4#but somehow benny is both an exception beyond the things dean verbally berated into sam's values in exchange for his inclusion back into#their dynamic in 7.07 as well as an example of the higher standard that exists for sam in the sense that. sam is expected to automatically#trust benny as an extension of dean. but dean was unable to do that for sam and sam flips that back around onto dean#but the thing is that dean has the authority to have the final say about amy's life or sam's autonomy#trusting sam isn't enough because just that alone doesn't meet dean's standard of his decision making#but trusting dean should be enough for sam to trust benny. like “and you believe him?” just. its suchhh a line#because dean has never believed sam. not when he was monstrous and (arguably just as ethically) drinking blood#not in season five (in fact he says it outright!) not in season seven with his own autonomy and by extension amy#but dean expects sam to believe him after holding sam in their relationship to a higher standard than he does for himself#(expecting sam to be open about ruby amy and amelia... but not doing the same with benny until its unavoidable)#and the thing is that. this was sam's point all along! so much of his relationship with ruby vs dean revovled around the idea that he shoul#be able to have that relationship w/o opening it up to dean. but dean redefines that boundary for sam's inclusion into their relationship#and then expects different standards for himself ie. that he should be able to do so while sam does not have that privileged#speaks very much to the patriarchal structure at play here and how these characters as Third to the samndean dynamic#and their own genders play into how they disrupt the dynamic. it's just as fascinating to me#that sam eventually lets dean have his lower standard wrt his not knowing that dean goes no contact w benny after 8.10#like sam watches benny get stuck in purgatory again with the idea that their relationship had continued#8.06#adflatus

DEAN hey, like it or not, that's the truth, okay? there was a time when that actually meant something. SAM yeah, yeah. no kidding. DEAN what does that mean? SAM you think this is just about benny? [...] DEAN what do you want to hear, sam? that i was wrong? fine. i was wrong. okay? but if you'd have just heard me out, if you'd have trusted me, all of this could have been avoided. SAM you didn't want me to trust you. you wanted me to trust Benny, and i can't do that. DEAN right. okay, well, then, what the hell do we do now?

so i understand and agree with the posts saying mary didnt know these grown men and shouldnt have been expected to baby them and jump right back into being their mother. but. it would have been so fun if it was like that though. shes babying these men that are older than her now and cooing over them and they call her mommy. its uncomfortable and off-putting to everybody around them

there is truly something to be said about someone coming out of supernatural doubling down on not only dean's idealisation of the winchester familial dynamic (of course, the john-exclusive version), but also the hunter idealisation of the nuclear to be protected, then applying that entirely on either an aged down sam and/or jack, exacerbating their statuses as extensions of their mutual patriarch whose entire characters have been watered down to their slimly compartmentalised identities for the purpose of presenting their roles as innocents to be protected and innocents to be protected Only
oh. baby!sam art. where dean is his dad and cassie is his mom. oh wow. im sure that's a real character there in your fanart. surely you're exploring that dean-infantalised perspective of sam right? or at least, perhaps, that hyperbolisation that dean himself does of his familial role proxy sam as his little brother... surely

Is it a testament to how fucked up he is that his first thought upon finding out he's pregnant is how badly he wants to dick his girlfriend down?
