Jist chiming in - reality TV of that time made that kind of living desirable to impressionable teens including myself. But I also came from a extremely dysfunctional family and felt I could relate. But it led to me craving even more chaos because it was so called edgy and cool. I liked living in the drama. TV shows like Skins glamorized it, I really wanted to be Effie. The crazy thing I came to realise was all these people were attractive and got away with shit a lot of the time. When you're average in real life, people are not so lenient. But I was so wrapped in myself I truly thought I was a beautiful misunderstood rebel trying to survive lmao. As teens it is messy and complicated but it shouldn't be on that kind of soul destroying level Skins portrayed as appealing. The actors recently said they were too young to film a lot of it and they are upset about it, it's child abuse basically.

I think you'll always get stories anywhere where it's glamorous and appealing. People will always read them or be drawn to them. People will always complain. Same with toxic yaoi fics. People will either be influenced for whatever reason or being able to appreciate it as just escapist fiction. I think the problem is when you're young, you're naive and inexperienced and fiction can influence you or fictionalised reality like Jersey Shore etc. It becomes your reality because you dont know any better or you don't listen to people telling you otherwise. That is why I laugh when people say fiction doesn't make people do things. I was out on a motorway high off my tits because I seen Effie do it. I was high and depressed. I nearly got hit by a car until the cops came lmao.

Firstly, I totally agree about it being easier to get away with when you're beautiful and also the Skins things!! Those poor people!! I think Skam did that sort of interpretation perfectly with characters like Eva, a good balance of the desire to be a rebel (and cool/popular) and the belief you are misunderstood without it being so serious and insane. She felt like an actual teenager whereas the Skins characters really did not. Another shout of a decent interpretation of this for me is Abby from Ginny & Georgia.

Also yes yes yes. There will always be stories about it and it will always be appealing to some; the desire for that kind of TV is proven to be alive and well with the popularity of shows like Euphoria (and to a lesser extent, Ginny & Georgia). I've always found disfunction fascinating in general, I'm endlessly interested in stories about rich people and popular party girls and kpop idol training. While my home life was relatively stable once my mom left my dad, I was surrounded by a lot of dysfunctional families in that most of my family members had sort of wild/sad lives (mostly addiction and abuse). I also had unsupervised endless access to the internet and television from a young age.

I never watched Skins when I was young (I'm American and didn't have access to British tv when it was coming out) so I didn't want to be Effie (Cassie's my favorite character anyways), but when I was like 7-9 my dream was to be just like Macy and Janelle from 16 & Pregnant when I was a teenager. Macy's okay (support pregnant teens, not teen pregnancy) but Janelle was an unhealthy mess, and they definitely shouldn't have been my heroes. Luckily, I've never been easily influenced and always been quite adept at separating fact from fiction, so even when I did get access to Skins and Skam and stuff, I never did actually try to be like them. Plus by the time I became a teenager, Skins and Teen Mom were past their heydays and I didn't really think of them much (however I was obsessed with Queer as Folk at like 13 and those characters are also not great role models on account of being mostly unhealthy, bad people).
