Typography
It is one of the most important quality of a designer. Typography is nothing but an art and technique of arranging text. There a lot of tutorials and blogs that explains typography. But it is always down to your creative intuition.
How to Choose a font?
There are several factors that influence in choosing font. I think below five factors place a crucial role.
1.Size
All fonts are not created equally. Some are fat, some are lean ,some are tall , some are short. It���s always a good habit when we use same size fonts when we are designing. It creates a simple harmony and looks beautiful.
2.Leading
Vertical spacing between each line is called leading. General rule is that your leading value should be greater than the font size; anywhere from 1.25 to 1.5 times .
3.Tracking and Kerning
Often people confuse between Tracking and Kerning .Tracking means spacing of all the characters are applied evenly. Where as Kerning means Adjusting the space between the characters to create harmony .
4.Measure
It is nothing but width of the text block. If we want to achieve good reading experience measure is one of the good typography factor that we need to focus.
5. Hierarchy and Scale
It is one of the most important factor that need to be taken into consideration , when we are trying to get a good readable text or content. If all the size of the text is same in a content, its really hard to differentiate between headings, important lines etc. That’s why we use difference in texts to make it really understandable (headings, sub-headings, bold text etc).Size is not the only way to achieve Hierarchy , it can be also be achieved by spacing, using color to text or by increasing weight of the text(bold).
These are the main factors that influence typography in designing. If we get a good understanding about these factors , designer will never struggle to achieve typography in his/her content.
