New Cubs News!
By: Matilyn Winans November 23,2017
While I've been gone, there have been big changes and big news for these Cubbies! I've had to wait until I had all my information in order but it's time that I give it to you. So here we go, into the Cubs news world... it'll be fun! Come on!
So on November 7th,2017 . Right fielder Jason Heyward won the golden glove award . It wasn't a surprise that he'd won this award, as this season ... he really showed what kind of player he could be. He was able to save many runs from coming in and going out of the ballpark! He did show improvement while up at bat this season as well.
On November 9th,2017, Brandon Hyde . Cubs first base coach was then moved to the Cubs dugout as the Cubs 2018 bench coach.
On November 10th, 2017, Anthony Rizzo received and was named the Marvin Miller Man of the year.
On November 17th, 2017 . Jake Arrieta and Wade Davis both rejected the offers they received from the Cubs as it wasn't enough for what they're expecting as major league players. Arrieta received $15.637 Million this season , while Wade Davis received $10 Million. They were both offered $10 million . Free agent Alex Cobb is a possible pitcher that could be in the Cubs line up as he too was given an offer but rejected that offer, so the Cubs may have a chance to make the grab. Cobb previously worked alongside with Maddon.
On November 18th, 2017. Charcer Burks was named a perfect prospect for the Cubs .
On November 20th, 2017. Bob Borkowski a former Cubs player who played with them for six seasons had passed away at the age of ninety one.
On November 21st, 2017. Top prospect De La Cruz was put on a 40 man roster.
On November 22nd,2017 . Jim Hickey was officially named the Cubs new pitching coach for the 2018 season.
So this is the latest Cubs news and I know there will be more to come as the days , weeks and months go on!

Two new righties for the Cubs! By: Matilyn Winans October 5th,2017 The Cubs have just now added two new right handed pitchers. These newbies are added with the current on mound pitchers now such as~ Jon Lester , Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana. We have a number of Cubs up for grabs . So let's learn a little about our new pitchers huh? Matt Caransiti- Matthew Joseph Caransiti was born on July 23rd, 1991. He is from New Britain Connecticut. Matt was first drafted in 2012 and onto the Colorado Rockies . He was in round six . Caransiti went to St. John's New York college. But he'd end up making his first debut in August of 2016. He has a W-L Record of (1-0) and an ERA of (9.19). He's pitched in (15.2) games and has struck out 17 of batters he's encountered. Matt has a WHIP of (2.30). Cory Mazzoni- Cory Mitchell Mazzoni was born on October 19th, 1989. He is from Evans City, PA. Mazzoni was first drafted in 2011 and onto the New York Mets. He was also the second round pick. Cory went to North Carolina State and made his debut in April 2015 on the 27th. He has a W-L Record of (0-0) and an ERA of (13.50). Cory has pitched in (8.0) games . He's has struck out 4 batters and has a WHIP of (2.63). So will this be a good move fore the Cubs? Will these pitchers help the Cubs in the long run? What do you think after reading about these new Cubbies.

More Changes for these Cubbies!
By: Matilyn Winans October 29th,2017
The Cubs have had a changing week or month in my opinion. All the changes started on the 22nd of this month. It all started when long time pitching coach Chris Bosnio was fired after being the pitching coach since 2012! So the Cubs were now on the hunt for a new coach in that department . A day later the assistant hitting coach was hired to be the Angels hitting coach. So now the hunt was on for a hitting coach. Then center-fielder Jon Jay was declared a free agent and made it official that he was leaving and fans were heartbroken . The Cubs found a prime candidate for a new pitching coach who was Jim Hickey and was hired , so one spot filled ~ and many more to go! Soon another spot was filled for the hitting coach position and it was given to Chili Davis .
Now they are saying more changes are to be made , but who else are we gonna have to say bye to? This is too much for Cubs fans and definitely for these Cubbies! Maybe it’ll be for the best and the Cubs will be able to improve more than they have. .

Fielding bible award winner- Javier Baez
By: Matilyn Winans October 29th,2017
This week Chicago’s very own Javier Baez won the fielding bible award for being the best multi-position defender. As he played two positions for most of the season , he played second base and short-stop. He never not once forgot to show us his skills this season. The rest of the teams always made the mistake to try and steal to second base, they should’ve just stayed at first because not once did Baez miss an opportunity to get a runner out. He showed how good he can be when he did his stylish catches to make an out. Overall , Javier Baez is a great defending player and deserved to receive this award.
But recent news circling around that Javier Baez could possibly be traded and this is all because they’re wanting to fix bigger problems that they have. I on the other hand don’t see a problem with Javy and the team. Second base , his original position could be given to him full time . This leaves Ben Zobrist and Ian Happ searching for a position themselves. The outfield could be an option but then there will be competition with Kyle Schwarber , Albert Almora and Jason Heyward for a spot. So was this going to be the last season with Baez or will we see him in the 2018 season? This is going to torture Cubs fans from all over the world but I guess we’ll have to see how it all pans out.

Anthony Rizzo receives the Roberto Clemente award!
By: Matilyn Winans October 27th,2017
As the third game of the World Series is taking place, the Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is winning an award. The Roberto Clemente award that is. What is the Roberto Clemente award you ask? The Robert Cllemente is described as the most valuable player on a baseball team. Why would Anthony Rizzo win this award? I mean why not? He is the most caring baseball player I’ve ever seen. The real reason? Anthony Rizzo won this award for all the charitable work that he has done with his cancer foundation in Chicago for pediatric cancer patients. The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation was made to soothe the families and to fund the cancer research.
Early in his career, Anthony Rizzo had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that starts in the cells and that is called lymphocytes. Anthony Rizzo was diagnosed in April of 2008 and went six months going through Chemotherapy. This is around the time that A.R met Jon Lester , his current teammate. J.L was a pitcher on the Boston Red Sox and had gone through the same thing that Rizzo was going through. Jon Lester had some inspiring words for him and said “Whatever you do , don’t stop playing.” While he was going through Chemo, Anthony’s grandmother was going through cancer herself but a different form~ breast cancer. After the six months~ on September 2nd, 2008, the doctor had told Rizzo that he was cancer free and he was only a couple weeks away from being fully done with the treatment. Now I’ve listened, read and watched his story about his journey down this road, and it brings me to tears each time. To think that the best first baseman got through something so hard and is as strong as he is now, just fills me with joy! The Cubs have a strong man on their team! When him and his family got the news that he was cancer free, they were on a flight. His mom answered and as she described it , she jumped out of her seat with excitement! The doctor told Anthony, “ You can have a normal life” and that’s exactly what he did. He decided to live life to the fullest and became a professional baseball player . Definitely a fan favorite and I can say my favorite .
In 2012 is when the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation came alive and started helping all. This foundation is being ran by family , close friends and Anthony Rizzo’s management team. It has raised more than 3.5 million dollar’s and that was just from this passed August this year. All the money was donated to Lurie Children’s Chicago hospital.

Cubs hire Chili Davis to be their hitting coach!
By: Matilyn Winans October 26th,2017
This week has been huge for the Cubs as they search for new coach’s and new player’s . Today, Chili Davis was named the hitting coach for Chicago. Chili Davis spent most of his life being an outfielder and a designated hitter while playing for the San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees. He started coaching back in 2012 for the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox , so he has a lot of experience in the baseball world.
The president of the team, Theo Epstein says that he will make a good fit for the Cubs. It’s all about the experience that Davis has had in his baseball career. As he has been on three All-Star teams and has had his fair-share of World-Series rings. Over his baseball career , playing in 2,436 and being a .274 hitter~ he’s hit over 350 home-runs and has run in a total of 1,372 given the total number of RBI’S. So with those numbers , Theo could be right when he said that this could be a great change for the Cubs. We will have to wait and see how this all pans out as the new season rolls in and see how these Cubbies do.

Could this be the new pitching coach for the Cubs?
By: Matilyn Winans October 25,2017
Not even after a week that Chris Bosnio was fired from being the Cubs pitching coach, the Cubs are already looking for his replacement. After searching and searching, there was one man who manager Joe Maddon had his eye on. The guy that he wants is Jim Hickey. Jim Hickey and Maddon have worked together before while Maddon managed the Tampa Bay Rays. Hickey was the Rays pitching coach from 2006 all the way to this baseball season. The Rays and Hickey decided to part ways after this season was complete. So the Cubs are looking to interview Hickey for the opening position, but it won’t be easy. Why won’t it be easy? Well since he’s such a good option for a number of teams, the Cubs aren’t the only one’s who are looking into him. Jim Hickey has drawn much attention and from the Giants, the Red Sox and the Cubs rivals ST. Louis Cardinals. So he’s got a line of teams that are very interested in him and it could possibly take a lot to say yes. Hopefully he will agree to teaming back up with his former partner, Joe Maddon.
While looking for a new pitching coach, the Cubs are also looking for a new assistant hitting coach after Eric Hinske was offered and took the job to join the staff on the Angels. Also new news in the baseball world, Dave Martinez bench coach for the Cubs is being interviewed for a Managing job for the Washington Nationals. Joe Maddon had said that Martinez should consider a managing job for himself. So a lot of openings are being put on the table, while there are no new updates~ the Cubs will eventually find people to fill the spots. The only questions are, by who? Who will take the spots? Will it be a good change for them? I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

LOST PLAYER! CUBS LOSE CENTER-FIELDER JON JAY!
BY: Matilyn Winans October 24th,2017
Today the Cubs lost a player from their team. They lost Center-Fielder Jon Jay , who joined the team back in 2016 on November 29th . Before ever coming on the Cubs , he made it on the ST. Louis Cardinals for six years but by 2016 he’d end up on the San Diego Padres. He made it big for himself long before being a Cub, but boy did he show what he was made of when coming to the Chicago ballpark! In this year of 2017, Jon Jay has been up to bat for a total of (379) times, with (65) runs and (112) hits~ he now has a batting average of (.296) . With (2) home-runs and (34) RB’S , he’s been able to help the Cubs to victory! This year, Jon Jay made his OPS percentage at a (.794). Jay took time today on Instagram to thank Chicago for being so welcoming with the time he spent with them.
THANK YOU @Cubs and the city of Chicago for welcoming my family and making 2017 so memorable.
Jon Jay became a fan favorite and no one is holding on to the words they have for him! He will be missed as a Cub and this is truly heart breaking to all Cubs fans.

Baseball Breaking News:
Cubs assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske hired to be the new hitting coach for the Angels!
By: Matilyn Winans October 23rd,2017
After Chris Bosnio had been fired from being the Cubs pitching coach, Eric Hinske accepted a job offer from the Angels to be their new hitting coach. Hinske joined the Cubs back in 2014 as their first base coach then later became their assistant hitting coach for three seasons and the Cubs this year became 16th with a (.255) batting average. The Cubs had a slugging average or OPS of (.775). They went on average (.256) and were in 14th place while having an OPS of (.772) when winning the World Series in 2016. So it seems the Cubs will have to look for now two open spots as we lose Hinske as well as Bosnio.

BASEBALL BREAKING NEWS: CUBS PITCHING COACH Chris Bosio FIRED!
By: Matilyn Winans October 22nd, 2017
After being with the Cubs as a pitching coach, Chris Bosio is dismissed. Chris Bosio has been the Cubs pitching coach since 2012 . He was in charge of the staff that eventually helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. There has been a change with the ERA in pitching as last year the Cubs had and ERA of (3.15) , now coming into the new season this year~ the Cubs had an ERA of ( 3.95). That’s a big change as they moved to seventh place given that number.
Cubs manager Joe Maddon is now looking for a replacement. No one knows who that may be , but Maddon always has a plan to move forward with his team. So will it be a good idea to let Bosio go ? Or will it be a bad decision? I guess we will see in the new baseball season.

BASEBALL BREAKING NEWS:
SEVEN CUBS ARE NOW FREE AGENTS!
By: Matilyn Winans October 21st,2017
Now that the Cubs season is over , they have seven players who are free agents and up for grabs. Will the team stay as it is or will we be down some great players? In the free agents category, we have four pitchers, two catchers and a center fielder .
Could this be bad or could a new player make the Cubs a better team? Let’s go through each player and see..
(ERA= Earned Run Average/ G= Games/SV= Saves/IP=Innings Pitched/SO= Strikeouts/ WHIP= Walks and Hits innings pitched)
The first player we will look at is, Wade Davis.
WADE DAVIS- PITCHER The 32 year old Cubs pitcher made his debut back in 2009. He was with two different teams before coming onto the Cubs. Davis this year had an ERA of (2.30), he has been in 59 games of this 2017 season. Davis has made 32 saves and that is more than what he’s made in past years. Wade Davis has pitched in 58 games and has struck-out 79 batters. That’s more than last year but not as much as when he was on past teams. In the 2017 season, he has allowed a percent of (1.14) to let batters get either walked or get a hit.
Second player to look at is, Jake Arrieta.
JAKE ARRIETA- PITCHER
The 31 year old Cubs pitcher has been around since 2013 and has turned into a fan favorite. He has only been on one team other than the Cubs so it would be a huge change in his baseball career if he gets called to a new team. Jake Arrieta this year has an ERA of (3.53) and he’s played in 30 games. He had a (W-L) record of (14-10) to end the 2017 season. Arrieta has an IP of (168.1) and has struck out over 163 batters! Jake Arrieta has a WHIP of (1.22) .
Third will be John Lackey
JOHN LACKEY- PITCHER
The 39 year old pitcher was brought up to the Cubs in 2016 but has had a big career in baseball as he started out in 2002 as a pitcher . This year Lackey has had an ERA of (4.95) and has played in 30 games. He has a (W-L) Record of (12-12) but has an IP of (170.2) . This year he has allowed 36 batters to homer off of him and had hit 12 of them as well. Lackey has struck-out 149 this year and just a little under Arrieta! Rumors are going around that Lackey might retire but no official statements have been made.
And the final pitcher will be.... Brian Duensing
BRYAN DUENSING-PITCHER
Bryan Duensing at an age of 34 has an ERA of (2.74) , he was just picked up from the Cubs this year . He’s played in 68 games and has an IP of (62.1), he’s struck-out 61 of the batters he’s faced. Duensing has a WHIP of (1.22) .
ALEX AVILA AND RENE RIVERA
The Two catchers who are up for grabs are Alex Avila and Rene Rivera. The Cubs were able to get them this season and pretty late into the season as well. While Avila is (30) , Rivera is (34) . They came into the Cubs very quickly and made their names known even quicker! While Wilson Contreras was injured for a part of the season , Alex Avila along with Rene Rivera took that spot and made things work for the Cubs . As they had a number of walk-offs and RBI’S to get the Cubs to victory when it was needed.
The final player we will look at is .... Jon Jay
JON JAY- CENTER- FIELDER
The Cubs had just gotten the Center-Fielder this year and at a late start in the season. He’d been on two teams before coming over to the Cubs and showing what he’s all about. He has played in 141 games , has hit 112 balls and has hit 2 home-runs . He’s made a number of catches and showed that he loves his spot on the field.
So are we going to say bye to some of these players? Would some be good to say bye to? Or would it ruin the team? Or will they stay with their team and with their position? I guess we’ll see when the new season starts.

Maybe time could’ve changed everything.
BY: Matilyn Winans October 20th,2017
An extra minute, an extra practice pitch, an extra practice swing and extra clubhouse talk . Is that all the Cubs needed to get through this series? An extra something to blow the Dodgers out of the water.
I think that extra’s in life are very important to being successful and DEFINITELY in baseball! Maybe if the Cubs had an extra day off than they got and got an extra practice in , they probably could’ve got more than they were given. If Quintana had thrown an extra practice pitch, he maybe could’ve struck out another batter that came up. If every Cub took one more practice swing, would they go up to hit a ball out in the out-field ? Or better , out in the stands? Maybe if the Cubs got one more prep talk than what they got~ they would’ve been able to go out and be more ready . Last year in the World Series, Jason Heyward gave the Cubs a final talk saying....
”We were meant to be here! We are here to win and we are not giving up!
That proves that an extra something is always needed and could help in any time. Why does it prove something? After the prep talk, the Cubs went back out in game seven of the World Series and took the lead against the Indians to win! Win it all and keep fighting for what they came to fight for. So, if the Cubs had an extra practice, extra practice pitch , extra practice swing , and an extra talk~ would it all be different? Would there have been another outcome? Would they have been able to comeback and win the series?
All we do know is that the Cubs played a good season and played to the best of their ability to get where they got. Doing your best is all that matters , if you do your best then you”ll never do wrong. Do nothing more and nothing less than you can do. That’s what these Cubbies did this season and fans couldn’t be more proud of them. Yes, they lost and yes that”ll hurt for a long time but all they did was , do the best they could. The best to keep the series going. The best to get a hit. The best to strikeout the next batter. The best to keep up and the best to make it to where they were last year. I couldn’t be more proud of the Cubs that they went out and put up a good fight and try to get back to where they were put just a year ago.

Dodgers take final win against Chicago and head to the World Series.
By: Matilyn Winans October 19th,2017
It’s a sad night in Chicago as the Dodgers win game five and eliminate the Cubs from Post Season races and L.A heads to the World Series. After game four, I think every Cubs fan had hope in the Cubs as they were able to keep this NLCS series alive and keep fighting for the same spot that they were in last year. In the end, the Dodgers were able to win this game with an ending score of (11-1) and they were off to celebrate on the Cubs field. Last year, this was all reversed. The Cubs beat the Dodgers and headed to the visitor's clubhouse to celebrate before heading to the World Series. With the great fight that the Cubs had put up this season, it sadly wasn’t enough to win it again but as they say “You can’t win it twice”. That’s what the Cubs always planned out to do , put up a greater and bigger fight each night in each game. They never gave up , they had each other’s back and gave every fan hope .
As the Cubs were able to get one run , the Dodgers were able to have a historical night. For starter’s, Enrique Hernandez had hit three home-runs in tonight’s game . He made history for the most home-runs in a Post Season game. While Clayton Kershaw pitched six great innings and got a redemption from last year’s L.A-CHI game. Last year Kershaw in game six, allowed the Cubs to run in five runs and allow them to win the final game they’d need. So winning this year for him was huge and huge for his reputation. Justin Turner and Chris Taylor were given the NLCS MVP award and it was time to party ! The Dodgers will now be able to host the WS games against whoever wins the Yankees-Astros NLCS game but that is still to be determined. The Cubs had a good year and put on a great show for all the fans. Fans who are still so loving and so proud of these Cubbies would say the same as I am. To bad their season was cut short but all they can do is get better than they are now and they’ll be ready to play as regular next season. Maybe some changes need to be changed , maybe we won’t see the same players or maybe we’ll see some new faces. All we have to do is wait and see till next season.

Cubs steal a win against the Dodgers and make it a (3-1) series!
By: Matilyn Winans October 19th,2017
After the Cubs went three straight games loosing against the Dodgers, tonight they steal a win and keep the NLCS series going! So let’s see how this was possible!
This will be the Rundown with Matilyn!
In just the second inning, we saw the Cubs get themselves on the board with back to back home-runs! Going down the line-up in today’s game, we get to the Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras. Willy walked up to do what we’ve known him for all season, to swing at a (90 MPH Four-Seam fastball) and crush it out into left-field. Making it a (0-1) ballgame and very quickly. The score would change when Javier Baez (2B) who’d have a count of (1-1) , would swing at a (83 MPH Knuckle Curve-ball) . This ball would would be sent right where Willy had sent his, to left-field. Making it a (0-2) ballgame!
The Dodgers would get a run on the board in the third because who likes the look of a team losing? Not them! Cody Bellinger (1B) came up to to swing at a (95 MPH Slider) and get it out into right-field. This made it a (1-2) game. I know! SCARY!
Bringing it to the third, the guy that got the second run in would come up and do damage. Javy Baez (2B) came up and with one strike, swung at a ( 84 MPH Change-up) and this one is gone into left-field. Man left is getting some action today! This made it a (1-3) game!
To end this game with a score of (2-3) we head into the eighth. Justin Turner (3B) walked up to have a count of (3-1) before he’d smack a ball into left-field off of a (94 Four-Seam fastball).
So the Cubs would keep this series going but could they pull through and win it all together? We’d have to watch, wait and see!
This has been the Rundown with Matilyn!

Dodgers take a (3-0) lead against the Cubs
By: Matilyn Winans October 17th,2017
Finally home and home for game three! After loosing the first two games against the Dodgers , the Cubs head home for game three. Hopefully it would end on a good note fans would say but in the end , the Cubs let the Dodgers continue their winning streak .Taking a final score of (6-1)! Kyle Schwarber was quick to get the Cubs up on the board when he hit a home-run and have the score start at (0-1)! The Dodgers did’nt like the sound of that so they came up to change that score and have it in their favor quickly! They were quick to hit some home-runs and by the third inning, the Dodgers had taken the lead with a score of (2-1). However, the Dodgers were able to increase their score in the fifth inning as Joc Peterson (CF) doubled working with a (3-2) count, Chris Taylor (LF) was able to get him home after tripling. This made it a (3-1) ballgame! By the eighth inning, the Dodgers had a (5-1) lead against the Cubs. Now with two on after a walk and a base-hit, it was looking like they’d be able to score again! Which is what happened and here’s how. Charlie Culberson was up but struck-out, Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras had then tried to make an out but didn’t have enough time. While this had happened, Dodgers second baseman Logan Forsythe ran in to score helped the dodgers keep up and in the lead. To get the final run in, all it took was a sacrifice fly-ball and it came off of Dodgers player Kyle Farmer. This got Austin Barnes home and the final score to be (6-1). So game three went to the Dodgers , and it was getting scary for these Cubs. Would the Cubs let the Dodgers win that easy? Will they put up their Cubbie fight? Can the Cubs go back to the World Series? So many questions that need to be answered but we’d soon see.
