Social Media and Society
In all my Tumblr posts despite using some different topics for conversation the focus was always the same, to present a very brief look at the impact Social media has had on our society. It's a subject we covered in our module even if only briefly compared to the other topics such as intersectionality. Despite it being brief it really caught my attention and has really been how I've viewed this class from the beginning as the course sprints to the finish. The truth is Social Media's rise in importance has been very costly. While it's moderators use it to spread agendas and for their own economic greed by attempting to glue it to our eyes we the general public use it as a primary form of information gathering and communication. This has hurt the way we talk to each other, both in person and over the internet. We can no longer simply trust what we are reading or hearing on the internet or from our friends. We can no longer click away at the things we find interesting and not expect repercussions. There is good in Social media. Just as it can be a tool for propaganda it can be a tool we as a society can use to support each other and have meaningful conversations. In California we recently had a massive wildfire season with many of my own friends suffering from the Eaton and Palisades fire, yet never have I seen the Southern California let alone the internet come together to show love and support like this. Social media truly became a place for everyone to come together and spread information regarding safe houses, shelter, donation sites and more.

Hi everyone! in my first post on Tumblr I posted about a recent ban on social media in Australia for children under the age of 16 and this video on TikTok by Tom Cashman is a bit more on the comedic side as its a satire. It's in his satire that he makes a point about how this is going to affect future generations of Australian children's progression and the educational gap between them and the rest of the world will only grow. Its relevance to our module this week again goes back to social medias impact on our society and how it has become an important tool in keeping our society connected and up to date with news and world events despite it's abusive controllers.

Tumblr media
Hi Everyone! I wanted to share this image because in our module this week we briefly covered social media and its effect on society. After watching the Ted Talk by Zeynep Tufekci I thought I would share this because it's a good brief recap of how algorithms work on social media. While each site has its own algorithm that may react differently according to your actions for the most part they're fairly similar as its purpose is to keep your eyes glued to the screen.

“No longer are we merely holding opinions different from one another; we’re also holding different facts. Increasingly our arguments aren’t over what we should be doing … but instead over what is happening.” - Farhad Manjoo
I love this quote and chose to use it for this post because now more than ever is it true that we must do our research before going into a discussion on political topics. It might fall on sore ears but we live in a very sensitive climate right now and any false step can be damning. This doesn't mean we shouldn't have those conversations but we should truly listen to each other so we can hear all angles because the truth is that much of what we consume is released with an agenda in mind. Alone it can be hard to distinguish truth from lies but together we can open eyes.

Recently it was announced that The government of Australia would be implementing a ban on social media usage for children under 16! its become a topic of conversation on social media whether other nations should follow suit. This article by the BBC gives a brief explanation on their thinking.
