The Tell Tale Heart
The Tell Tale Heart is a tale of murder and terror, told by a homicidal madman yet nameless. I think the narrator’s gender is a male after consulting the story myself based on the pronouns used and illustrations provided. This fiction is a macabre or having a character’s death as a main subject which symbolizes the author’s theme or obsession in the story.
The point of view was taken from the narrator, or the killer himself stating his doings to the audience reading the story. The tale has two main characters, the narrator and the old man who has “vulture-like” eyes, whom he murdered. The relationship of the narrator and the old man is uncertain due to lack of information and details but based on my prespective, they are not blood related but the narrator is some kind of a caretaker arranged to took care of the old man.
As a matter of fact, he said that he loves the old man. The story proceeds as I said before, he loves the old man but has hatred for his eye only. And every night, be goes to the old man’s bedroom to shine a single ray of light to man’s eye which the narrator as stated, an “evil eye” but fail to do so because it was always closed. But one night, as he doing to perform his nightly ritual,he created a sound that interrupted the man’s sleep and he decided to open his lantern to shine to the old man’s eye. Then he didn’t hesitate to attack the old man, chopped up his body and hid it under the floorboards of their house.
The neighbors who have heard the thrilling scream immediately reported it to the police officials and further investigated the crime scene. Somewhat to cover up his feeling of guilt, he accommodated the officers and gave them a chair to sat on exactly at the place where the body is hidden. Later on, he heard the violent beating of the heart of the old man’s corpse which drove his conscience and admitted his crime and told them to lift up the planks.
The narrator in the story according to my point of view, was suffering from a disorder which makes him anxious looking at the old man’s eye and nervous that made him into a psychopath. This leaves us a stream of consciousness as we drawing further unto the ending.

The truth will set you free (Historicism)
The Tell-Tale Heart written by Edgar Allan Poe is a story about an unnamed narrator and an old man. It is a point of view of the narrator, it started when he stated that he was nervous but he wasn’t mad. He loves the old man, he didn’t think to get the old man’s gold, but he was triggered because of the man’s eyes – like an eye of a vulture.
The unnamed narrator, for me, is paranoid and mentally ill. He doesn’t know what is real from not, that’s why he always give meanings to everything he does or sees. While the old man is rich like what the narrator’s said in the story. I think he trusts the narrator so much, that’s why he didn’t think that the narrator can kill him because of his eyes.
For me, the narrator is a male. Simply because if the narrator is female, I am sure that she can’t murder or kill a person. Of course, as a female, I don’t have the courage to do things like that. Females, somehow, are not so brave or strong to do acts like what the narrator did. We might faint first before we can murder someone. I think the reason why the narrator killed the old man because he is obsessed with the old man’s eyes. Like what’s said in the story, whenever he sees the man’s eye, he feels angry. So he was triggered because of the eyes.
For me, the vulture-eyes symbolize something. It symbolizes some part of the narrator’s identity. Maybe because he saw something in the eyes that not everyone can see. The eyes reveal something about him, the narrator. In the last part of story, the narrator heard a beat, for him it was the old man’s heart beat. But I think, it is not. It is his conscience; it is guilt from doing or from killing the innocent old man.
He killed the old man because of the eyes. He tried to deny his wrong doing, but the truth will always come out. The truth was come out from his own mouth. And I believe that the truth will set you free.

Historicism
The Tell-Tale Heart is a story about the old man and the unnamed narrator. The story's point of view taken is the narrator and he opened up the story by admitting that he is nervous but not mad. He said that he loved the old man for he never wronged him. But the motive why he murdered the old man is because of its vulture-eye.
I am certain that the narrator is a male and he is a paranoiac because if she's a female, it would be hard for her to murder the old man. Also, he is paranoiac for he constantly believes to false events.
I somehow believe that the old man is a threat to narrator. Since he has mental illness, he might think that the old man's eye is a fashion for it's very beautiful and it looks keen and aware of everything he sees. So maybe he is jealous of the old man's eye. However he is might also afraid of it for the vulture-eye makes him nervous.
I guess they're not just a neighborhood but maybe they already have a good relationship in the past. And if the vulture-eye is his motive to kill the old man, maybe it symbolizes to sharp and aware persons that only wants good in the society.
As a result of the story, he murdered the old man but at the end he surrendered with the only same reason and it is him being terrified and delusional.

Different stories, One motivation
“What is home for you?” If someone will ask me that question, I will answer him by saying “Home is where my family is” because I believe that they are the real ones where I can feel warmth and secured all time. Being with your family is the most precious and priceless moment that no one can take away or surpass that feeling.
As I’ve read the story “Five brothers, One mother” by Exie Abola, I realized one thing. All mothers in the universe are a gift from God. They always do their best to give us the care and love we need – the love and care which is only given by our mothers. They want the best for us; they want us to have everything we deserve in this world. Even though they’re tired of doing all the household chores, they still managed to work for us and to satisfy our needs because they love us whole heartedly.
Yesterday (August 10, 2017), my teacher gave us time to discuss or share our feelings regarding the customs and traditions we are doing at home, when is the time which we feel appreciated or taken care of, and the most interesting history that affected our family. While discussing, I can’t help but to smile while listening to my classmates. Why? Because I can sense that they’re happy with their family even though they’re facing problems.
The sharing made me realized two things. First, our family has their own way of making us feel appreciated and being taken care of. They may not show their true feelings, but deep inside, I know that every time we got awards at school, they are super proud of us. Also every time we feel sick, they are worried of us and they always give what food we want to eat for us to feel okay. Second thing I realized is that we can conquer all the problems if and only if we have our family at our side.
We may have different stories/problems, but one thing is for sure we only have one motivation to face all of it, and that is our family. We may be affected of what’s happening in our family, but everything will be okay because the love for the family will always be the top of everything.

Source of Love
Home and family are different from each other. However, it is just the same for me. A family is a home because it is just not place but something that completes my well-being. We all have the traditions and customs inside our home that affect our human being, and for me, that is the way of taking care of the family and having security in our home.
Since the day of the sharing about our story in our home, I realized that what is the tree is so the fruit. We are all different because of the distinction of how our parents treated and raised us. If there are no customs in your home, maybe you will not know the difference between right and wrong. It is because you were not well guided and you only follow what is pleasurable to you. I am grateful that I am born and raised Filipino. It is because Filipinos are very conservative and very caring of their members of the family.
Another thing I realized is in any problems you come through, if it's already about your family, it more affects you. Even if it's just a simple problem it's still heavy because it is about your family. Maybe because the bigger of your love to your family, the more you care about them, the more affected you are.
The lesson is we must know the worth of our family. They are always there for us through thick and thin, and up and down. For me, there will be no one or nothing that I can compare to my family. As long as we are complete, our love will always remain.

My Realizations
Yesterday, we were divided into groups to discuss these three questions: 1) customs and traditions of your family 2) when do you feel appreciated or taken care of and 3) interesting history that affected your family.
For an ambivert like me, it is hard to express feelings or tell your family profile to others because my family was completely broken. But somehow, I opened up and tell them what they need to know but only partial. And then after hearing my groupmates’ side of story, I realize I wasn’t the only one that is feeling the same way like I do now. Like for question #2, I only feel my importance if I took home an award or a medal or when I am sick.
But when I heard their answers to question #3, i was like, “wow”. There are so may things I didn’t know about them that morphed them to become the people I know today. No matter where are you or what you do, your family will be the only ones who will look after you, will love you and will cherish the moments you spend with them.
Even if I don’t have the family that I have back then anymore, atleast I have found a new home. I will not mention any name but I am happy and I will always be grateful to God for that.

Apo On The Wall (My Reflection)
As I’ve read the poem entitled, “Apo on the Wall”, in the first place, I know that it was all about the time of Ferdinand Marcos so it gave me a feeling of curiosity, for I am an enthusiast and interested of heeding something about the past, and knowing someone’s perspective especially in poetry.
So I’ll summarize the poem or rather talk about it. It’s all about how brave and influential Ferdinand Marcos was. The speaker tells us his point of view as a young boy who’s father is a general, hanging a picture of his boss on the wall that is Apo or Marcos himself. Pushing the general to work hard, feeling those eyes peering and staring at him like a “scary Jesus in the hallway” hence, what the boy felt when he sneaked to his father’s office.
I discovered that the poem is all about how did the Martial Law affected the citizens of the Philippines. I felt pity for those people who’s still traumatized about what happened years ago. But lucky for us, we didn’t experience the “chaos” that time, in the Marcos era.
So, the question is, is it good or bad for the people living in that regime? For me, it was helpful and I agree with the declaration of Martial Law. The Filipino were well-disciplined and the economy of Philippines was high. For some people, Ferdinand Marcos, was a merciless dictator. For me he is not, for he is the only president who made the Filipino citizens to be well-disciplined, loyal to the country, and to respect to earn back respect.
If I will be given a opportunity to write the poem , I’ll state the occurrences or happenings that time. The benefits and also the tragedies, how Marcos contributed to this country, and how a good even though fierce leader Marcos was.

Reviving the Past
There’s this poem I’ve read entitled “Apo’ On the Wall” which was written by Bj Patino, it’s all about a child and his father, which is a soldier, which brought his work at home and a photo of his boss which he calls “Apo”. At first, when I read the poem, I didn’t get the real meaning of the text but as I read it, there’s a story running on my mind.
Apo, in Hiligaynon language, means “grandfather” while in the Ilocano language is “master” or “sir”. For me, there’s a deeper meaning for the word “Apo” in the poem. The writer maybe talking about the former president, Ferdinand Marcos while the poem itself talks about what happened then when there was still Martial Law.
After reading the poem, I realized that it was really talking about what happened in the past; about how Filipinos have to follow rules during Martial Law and if not, they will get punishment. I feel many emotions after reading the poem. I don’t know how to express it. But one thing’s for sure, back then you have to be strong for you to survive. There’s a line in the poem, “there was no place for a boy, only men”, every one of us should be brave enough to stand up for own, for us to have our freedom back then, not to be scared of doing what’s right and just even there’s an eyes looking at you while you moved around like what’s in the poem.
The poem made me feel what was happened in the past, most likely when Filipinos experienced being abused in their own homeland. The line, “I know, I know what you’re doing” for me talks about President Marcos which was he is observing everything Filipinos do that time.
Reviving what happen back then was not bad after all. I strongly agree of what Bj Patino wants to say, Filipinos should be brave to stand up for their own good so they can conquer all possible problems they’ll face in the future. Martial Law was somehow a dark time for the Filipino that should not happen again today.

Apo on the Wall By Bj Patino
Apo means in Hiligaynon language is “grandfather” while in Ilocano language, it is “master” or “sir”. So Apo on the Wall, if I will look only in its title, it is like a photo of someone that is old and was hanged on the wall. This poet is all about President Ferdinand Marcos and the father of the boy, who’s maybe a soldier and was working for president.
What I feel after reading the poet is I remember the times when I was younger, and every time I am about to do something there is my parents watching over me and I was scared if I’ll do something wrong, they will scold me. So I kind of feel what the boy felt whenever he passed by or see the photo on the wall.
I discover that some things that we are afraid to can be an inspiration to do something right and avoid what is wrong. It means that, if we are scared of something then it can be our guide to continue pursuing our goals in order to avoid punishments and disappointments.
I agree to this poetry because I experienced of being scared and now I have some goals to pursue and I am making a way to have some motivation to reach my goals. If I am going to write the same poem with the same theme and story, I would talk about how those threats became my guidelines and motivation to reach my goal.

Guidance on a Circumstance
Self-studying, a way wherein a student learns without a guidance of a teacher or a trainer, either with the use of some educational supplementary or learning just through observations and life experiences, is one of the common practices since and then. Despite the fruits it can bring to a student, the procedure, however, still has its flaws, for there are chances that the student may misinterpret a certain topic or particular data since there are no well-educated and well-experienced person who will guide him all throughout the learning process.
When you teach yourself, you might miss some very important details in every lesson, learning with a teacher is much better than studying your own; a teacher is there for guidance in giving approach to the lessons or subjects in a better way which can help students to understand it more clearly. Besides, an educator can give help to students who are experiencing difficulties, he or she can also points out what is wrong and can explain it perfectly which can be used as motivation to study.
Having a tutor can benefit your learning experience, they can provide knowledge that can help you understand the lesson more thorough. For example, in studying Mathematics, you need guidance from a teacher on solving the problems properly, teachers can also give encouragement if you are puzzled on solving a certain problem or situation.
Although self-studying has its certain leaks, this activity can still enhance and help students in many different aspects. Self-studying can give students freedom of learning without restrictions. It can also eliminate all the worries if one student can’t learn anything on what he’s studying, because there are no expectations at all. On the other hand, learning through oneself may increase independence capabilities and may lead to a much bigger picture of self-sustaining towards future challenges. This may also help prepare student for the higher education, wherein teachers are most likely to care less whether the student is learning or not.
There are many disadvantages and advantages of studying alone, but in the end, studying is more effective if and only if students receive guidance from their teachers.
