I hope one day I get to meet McQ to tell him how much I deeply appreciate his dedication and abnegation for the sake of Mission Impossible.
Reading his interviews and seeing how he talks, you can tell he was absolutely burned out and exhausted.
Not only he had to manage a multi-million dollar franchise during one pandemic that shut everything down (which some people seem to have forgotten about for the sake of being unreasonable and petty), but he did it over two strikes as well.
Scouting locations, going from country to country, making sure everyone got paid, making sure everyone was safe, fed, well taken care of.
Not only that, he couldn't see his family for long stretches of time during a long while.
He has given his entire heart and soul to this franchise and I frankly will take an issue with anyone that tries to downplay the fact that he didn't need to come back after Rogue Nation but did because of reasons that are his own.
#The day y'all understand the sacrifices this man has made is the day we all can talk#until then just leave him the fuck alone#I see some of people trying to rewrite history#this movie is an amalgamation of all the things he loves the most and it shows#it feels personal because it is and in ways we can't even begin to comprehend#and you can tell he was terrified of the audience rejecting the ending because#a) is the ending so it needs to be tied up neatly and b)it is a lot more personal#< just copying the tags#tom cruise#christopher mcquarrie#mission impossible#mcqruise

Adding onto what you pointed out (which in fact is very domestic)
McQ doesn't even really react to the arm grab. There's this tiny movement of his mouth, like just acknowledging that Tom is touching him, most normal thing in the world. But nothing else. Probably is the most normal thing in the world for him.
Also Tom looks like 'I'm standing next to McQ but we're not touching. That's wrong. We need to touch' and then he grabs his arm. Then his hand slides down like he's trying to touch him for as long as possible. And (this is where my brain runs really wild) you could even interpret the slide as Tom wanting to grab McQ's hand but stopping himself and instead reaching for the small of his back.
#tom really can’t stay 5 seconds without touching mcq#< perfect tag prev#mcqruise#christopher mcquarrie#tom cruise#heather mcquarrie

"I laugh at the, at the, the suppositions that people are immortalising in terms of what they think this partnership is and how it works. It's, it's absolutely, it's, it's, it's absolutely nothing like people suppose."
- McQ on the Empire Spoiler Special Podcast about his relationship with Tom
Chris, I have questions!! 👀
"It's absolutely nothing like people suppose."
Okay, so at first I thought he's talking about people thinking they are - let's say - romantically involved. But no, that's just us on here. The general public doesn't think that way. If you ask google, all that comes up is things like "strong working relationship", "creative partnership", "brotherhood"...
McQ, you can't deny the two of you have a strong working relationship but you say it's wrong... Sooo that got me thinking that we're.... right?
#i know i'm probably talking bullshit#but mcq isn't any better really#like what you do mean?!#mcqruise#tom cruise#christopher mcquarrie

Because this post deserves a part 2.
Another list of Tom and Chris things that live rent free in my brain
They used a tank picture as a stand in for something in Rogue Nation, Tom saw it and got excited and McQ realized he'd have to write an underwater sequence.
Christopher McQuarrie suffering from "I was going to say something but then stopped myself" syndrome where he was about to say "Tom he's really my... (my what, we'll never know) you know..."
McQ knowing Tom liked an specific movie and writing a whole ass scene with a horse in it just because of it (mind you that there are expenses and logistics to consider).
McQ asking- through sign language- if Tom was happy when they were shooting their underwater scenes.
McQ coming back to shoot every Mission Impossible movie even after he said he wouldn't because "Tom is very persuasive".
McQ smiling every time a reporter used the term creative soulmates to describe his connection with Tom (but his smile was always at the word soulmates).

You know what's telling?
How despite Tom's attempts to save Hollywood, to save business, to stop what he might think he has helped star from getting worse, he does not want to be seen as it's savior.
When Spielberg said what he said, you could tell those weren't word Tom was prepared to hear nor words he agreed with it (hence the constant moving of his head as a sign of no), he became a symbol, an image of "the last movie star" that became progressively larger than life on it's own.
But the thing is, after that, Tom has gone through hoops to say he wasn't the only one who did it, to reinforce the hard, continuous work of everyone around him and above all else, to show support to other movies.
He doesn't want to be seen as the last movie star, he doesn't want to carry the weight of saving Hollywood again, and again, and again. He wants it to thrive of it's own.
He wants to do what he loves knowing he'll leave a legacy for fellow actors. A legacy better than the one he had for himself.
He doesn't want to go on like this, worrying about a business he's helped shaped into what it is. Doesn't to worry over and over about what will happen to it once he dies.
Will it die with him?

"I don't know the man you're judging and I don't judge the man I know"
"If I had doubts about this man's character, I wouldn't have made 9 movies with him. I wouldn't have made 2."
“Tom does not come without his share of controversy, and that’s an element of these movies. And what I’ve watched happen over the course of 3 of these movies is there’s a segment of the audience that prefers to look at the controversy rather than the movie. And I have felt that segment of the audience just eventually look at it and go: ‘alright, fine, just alright, I come to the damn movie’, you know, and they’ve reconciled. I feel that, I feel that in this movie. This is the first time of the 9 movies in 12 years where I really feel the wind in our back. We, Tom and I, are always a little bit… we’re a little bit the underdog. […] And I have people ask me all the time. They have their preconceived notions about Tom, and they come up, and you know. I’ve been confronted about stuff, and I’m just like: ‘I don’t know the man you’re judging and I don’t judge the man I know.’ I’m very comfortable, in terms of my understanding of this man’s character. And if I had doubts about this man’s character, I wouldn’t have made 9 movies with him. I wouldn’t have made 2.”
— Christopher McQuarrie on E78 of The Big Picture (July 2018)

And this from a man who says things like If it doesn't serve the story it's not gonna be in my movie??? What the hell, McQ?!
Thanks to a post I just saw I realized that McQ really likes to make Tom happy because what do you mean he put a horse scene that didn't need to exist on his movie just because he knew Tom liked a similar scene from another movie?
Like, he had to thought about it, write about it, find or have someone to find a facility that trains horses, shoot the scene (all which is expensive, make no mistake) for again, a scene that could have been written five hundred different ways.
Christopher, is there anything you'd like to say?

No promises at all but I'm gonna add both to my ideas list! I'm still hooked to write more mcqruise!!
Mcqruise fics I'd literally pay to read
5 + 1 times where McQ realized he was completely screwed because saying no to Tom is hard af the one time he does say no to something
Fic with McQ with imposter syndrome (real) and Tom with little self worth both pining for each other for almost 20 years + Heather being awesome.
If anyone writes any of these, please let me know and tag me lol

I'm choosing to believe in the bunker when Ethan grabs ahold of both Grace and Benji that this is an acknowledgement that Benji is his love interest too. (And also the fact that Benji is the last person Ethan looks at before walking off).
