There are many, many differences between Lex in Smallville and Lex in Superman (2025), but one of the biggest ones is that SV!Lex absolutely knows he’s down bad for Clark in a gay way while 2025!Lex has his “I hate you, stupid alien” blinders on so tightly that he doesn’t realize what he really wants is to fuck Superman. SV!Lex is like “we’ll be the stuff of legend” and “you and I share a destiny” and “I’ll always love you” because he knows exactly what’s up, whereas 2025!Lex is like “I’m so obsessed with you that I memorized your every move” and “I tried to start a war just to get a chance to meet you” and “I cloned you” with a big dose of “which could mean nothing!!!”

Buck staying over for the night and Christopher has a school project that he totally procrastinated on. He needs a poster board, like right now (it’s like 10pm) So he goes into eddies room (they were changing into their pjs so bucks in there too) and is all “dad I need a poster board for a project that I just found out about blah blah blah [normal kid stuff]” Eddies like “really 🤨 you just found out about it 🤨🤨” Buck is watching this and trying to hide his smile because he has definitely done this to Maddie (more than a few times), and is like “okay Chris me and Eddie will go get your poster board” and Eddies looking at him with a raised eyebrow and is like “we will??”

They’re walking out to their car and eddies like “you know I really think we should teach him a lesson about procrastinating” Buck rolls his eyes and is all “take pity on the kid eds you’ve never procrastinated ever in your life??” And eddie goes “no Buck, I haven’t. Blah blah blah big strong man blah blah blah my dad blah blah blah” (Buck is listening with a little smile and if is hair was long enough he would be twirling it btw)

They drive almost 30 minutes to the 24 hour unnamed grocery store to get this poster board, and Bucks all smiley because oh so this is what Maddie went through with him, but now eddies right there and eddies all annoyed but it’s so… cute?? Why is he thinking about Eddie being cute?? That’s his straight best friend

Eddie notices Buck staring and he’s all grumpy and is like “what Buck” Buck just gives him a goofy little smile and that makes Eddie smile a little and suddenly they’re at the poster boards and they’re giggling a little bit now because this is fun!! Their Eddie’s kid procrastinated on his school project and it’s almost 11 now and they’re getting him a poster board and it’s all so domestic?? Buck and Eddie are doing something so traditionally parent for Christopher. Buck is feeling all warm and fuzzy about it and he doesn’t quite know why

They get home with the poster board (and by this point it’s literally almost midnight and this thing is due tomorrow) and Chris is so so relieved. They both take pity on him and help him with his project (Eddie does NOT want to, but then he caves. Chris and bucks puppy dog eyes are lethal individually, but together?? No way he was winning this one)

Suddenly it’s three in the morning and they’re FINALLY done and Chris is asleep. They crash into eddies bed together (too tired to think about the couch) and wake up tangled around each other to Chris barging into the room because he’s about to be late for school with the project they stayed up all night for

the thing is, eddie treats buck like his husband. he treats him like his partner and expects buck to act like his partner and he usually does!! they usually operate like a unit without acknowledging that the space they’re taking up in each other’s lives is “spouse”. but because they do this without talking about it, sometimes when something enormous happens (800 miles of desert, bobby dying, etc) the cognitive dissonance gets in the way. and so when buck is crashing out about eddie leaving, or when eddie is angry with buck for not being emotionally supportive in the way he needs, what they’re really saying is “you’re supposed to be my husband and you’re not doing that right now and it feels bad”. and by and large the response from the other one is almost always “you’re right, I fucked up, and I’ll do better next time”. and this has bled over into chris’s worldview too. in my opinion. because i don’t think he has ever thought hard enough about it to think of buck as Dad #2 in conscious terms, because to him, he probably does not remember a time before buck entered his life. Buck has basically always been there and so he does expect buck to operate in a dadlike way in his life, and even though buck has not given himself that title in his head, it’s how he treats chris and thinks about their relationship. like i think if chris asked buck for permission to go somewhere or do something, buck would either say yes or no, and that would be final, and no one involved would think this was weird. does that make sense? like if chris asked if he could go to the movies, buck would just be like yeah as long as you finished your homework. he would Not say “idk man ask your dad” or whatever, and if he did chris would think it was weird. and eddie would think it was weird too. because he treats buck like his husband.

excuse me for stating the obvious but like. james gunn outright calling superman an immigrant and doubling down on it when he got backlash (because he IS an immigrant, that's the point of superman) + the in-movie dialogue of "aren't you going to read me my rights?" "you're an extraterrestrial, son. you haven't got any rights to read." + the violence of his arrest and how they torture and mistreat him unapologetically, all under the guise of "protecting america", in a film releasing during the onslaught of violent ICE kidnappings and abuse... yeah it's really no wonder right-wing knobheads are crying about this being woke. they're being forced to look directly at the reasons one of the most notorious heroes of all time would not be on their side. and that's only ONE of the reasons this movie covers

Honestly if Clark had just gone to Lex at almost any point in season 2 or 3 and been like "you're right, I do have a secret but I'm not ready to tell you and honestly I don't know if I'll ever be ready but it’s not you, no one except my parents and Pete know," well first, Lex would've taken him at his word because as desperate as Lex was for the truth, it was primarily driven by the fact that he knew Clark was lying to him about even having a secret.

Secondly, he probably would've assumed Clark was gay and secretly dating Pete so in his head he would've been like this poor smalltown baby gay, he's already been bullied and is probably scared of adding to it. So Lex would throw his energy into being an Ally™ (I actually hc him as bi but that's another post), assuring Clark he'll accept him no matter what and he's happy to have a friend like him regardless of how he feels, which leads Clark to think Lex is gay.

It then becomes this weird feedback loop of them reassuring the other and waiting for them to come out like that episode of Malcom in the Middle where Malcom and Reese each think the other is gay.

S1 Clex is soooo insane like. That's a billionaire and a farm boy. They kiss at first sight. Clark's kiss brings Lex back to life. After knowing each other for a day they declare that they have a future together and they don't want anything to stand in their way. Everyone thinks Lex is spoiled but don't let Clark hear you say that. They make heart eyes at each other 24/7. Lex is sooo invested in Clark's love life. He craves Clark's father's approval, but Clark is determined to be with Lex whether his father likes it or not. They hang out so much that Clark's friends think no one else exists around him anymore. Lex never fails to mention that they are gonna be best friends forever and ever. And the whole time you know that they are doomed by the narrative
