In light of You Need To Calm Down winning the best music video at the AMAs last night, let me take a moment to remind everyone why it isn’t a “woke” music video, and why it isn’t progressive for it to be the best music video. As a queer person, I feel like I can speak on this, but I would love for people to add on anything else and to hear other LGBTQ+ people’s opinions on this 

1. Taylor could have featured an LGBTQ+ artist in her SONG, not her music video, her SONG and let them speak on struggles of being queer instead of speaking FOR the LGBTQ+ community.

2. She compared the struggles of being a celebrity to the struggles of being queer. 

3. She put a bunch of LGBTQ+ artists on parade to show she’s a good ally. It reminded me of a gay zoo, literally, like what?

4. Rainbow capitalism.

5. Kind of going back to #1. Taylor has a massive platform. She should have used that to let someone else speak on the issues instead of saying “look at me and what a good ally I am.”

6. She used the music video as a way to repair her image. The “mending” of her relationship with Katy Perry at the end of the video? How about if you’re going to use a song to talk about the struggles of being gay, and why other people should stop being bigoted, you don’t shoehorn in your own personal agenda?

A good ally doesn’t speak for a community. A good ally elevates the community so that they have the voice to speak about it themselves.

I used to be a Swiftie before that song, I just want to make sure that people know that though she was well-intentioned, she doesn’t really know what being a good ally is.
