i know some people will always have understandable gripes about zenos's story and ending but tbh as someone who finds a lot enjoyable and even self-taggable in the character i've always loved his whole arc, including its pointlessly self-destructive ending. to be clear this is a pro-zenos post and i'm talking about people who are like "it kind of sucks that zenos's whole thing is being depressed and then he dies cold and alone literally beyond the reach of any other person after finally briefly realizing there are other ways to live," a sentiment which i totally understand but very much disagree with.
is it good when carrie white is pushed to her breaking point and murders everyone around her, including the bullies who have made her life a living hell, the authority figures who failed her, and the remorseful penitent who tried to reach out to her? no. does it fuck? yes.
is it good when the hollowed-out and catastrophically depressed crown prince of the empire uses his wealth and power to hone himself into the finest killing edge imaginable? no! is it healed behavior when he directs that cutting edge at his own father and countrymen and the entire world in the name of his personal vendetta and desire for fulfillment? nope! is it evolved of him to transform himself into a monster to pursue you to the ends of the universe to help you save everyone simply so he can get his final, pointless duel, acknowledging only at the very end when he is mortally wounded that there were other ways to live? not at all!
but does it fuck? yes!!!
no one has to like zenos's arc. but i do feel that it's an arc partly about his refusal to ever relinquish his viselike grip on his pride and his self-concept. and there is a strange dignity, that in no way detracts from or counterbalances his monstrousness, in his insistence on living and dying as a monster, different from other men, and i think a lot about that is not just compelling but in some ways enviable or longed-for or at least capital-r Romantic. okay this isn't where i intended for this post to end but i guess my conclusion is that zenos has a lot in common with the phantom of the opera and that's part of why his whole thing rules.
#I fully and firmly believe that characters can and should be allowed to exist without a want or need for any kind of personal growth#Zenos is a prime example of a motherfucker who lived his life for one sole purpose and died chasing it#and every second of that purpose fucked harder than the last and THAT IS FINE#THAT IS FUCKING SICK ACTUALLY#Zenos doesn't need to be deeper than he is he doesn't need to grow or be redeemed he was who he was#unashamed unabashed wholly himself and he chased the WoL to the ends of creation in pursuit of the one thing he wanted#AND IT FUCKED SO HARD OP YOU'RE SO FUCKING RIGHT

A friendly reminder to USians: if you are planning to vote on Election Day, your mantra is "Nothing I see today convinces me not to go vote."
Exit polls suggest DT cannot be caught? YOU STILL GO VOTE.
Exit polls suggest KH has it in the bag? YOU STILL GO VOTE.
Pundits are saying the country is swinging overwhelmingly red? YOU STILL GO VOTE.
Pundits are saying the country is swinging overwhelmingly blue? YOU STILL GO VOTE.
Polls can be misleading (intentionally or not). The methodology can be biased (or simply poor). Early results may not reflect what the full count will show. There may be a red mirage. NOTHING YOU SEE CONVINCES YOU NOT TO VOTE.
The biggest Democratic win in swing states means nothing if democrats don't turn out everywhere to keep the reliably blue states blue.
VOTE. Wear appropriate weather gear if you think you may have to stand in a line outside (coat, hat, gloves, umbrella, sunhat, whatever, you know where you live). Bring water and a snack and something to do (book, game on your phone, podcast and headphones, whatever, you know what you like). GO VOTE.
NOTHING YOU SEE ON ELECTION DAY CONVINCES YOU NOT TO VOTE.
