I love cast interviews so much because they connect all the dots that i just wasn't quite there with articulating. Liv speaking on Van and how the scientists change everything because the narrative she's been telling herself, that they're all stuck here forever but hey they're doing just fine, suddenly shatters. And to quote Liv "now its intolerable" and that puts so much fucking emphasis on Lauren's Van. What adult Van is like and how she acts. Van locked herself into a mindset, didn't let herself think ANYTHING else would happen, and suddenly, its all been upended and she's faced with the fact that this entire time, there was a means to escape and they could absolutely have been saved. which makes every death, every hunt, every draw, every call, every cannibalistic ritual, all of it. Completely. Fucking. Unjustified. All of it becomes unnecessary. (at least in her eyes) And suddenly she can't back it up with "survival" anymore. And that's what we see with van after the scientists, particularly in episode 10. How she doesn't want to rig the deck, because what if someone else comes by. What if its another death that could maybe be avoided if we could just get the hell out of here. Suddenly she's faced with the reality of looking back at everything they've done, everything she encouraged others to do and fought to get them through, and can see nothing but the blood on her own hands because this whole time escape wasn't as far off as she thought. Escape seemed so far fetched to her that it wasn't even an option. But these frog scientists? Suddenly they walk in and the illusion breaks. And then we see Van break along with it, and her descent into unpacking the fact that none of what she told herself and believed was ever real. Then all of this descends into what Adult Van becomes, and while she seems to tell herself now that's she's not believing any particular narrative, I'm not sure that's entirely true either. I mean think about it, she's living in a video store wrapped up in the past. She's not "moving on", she's pretending it never happened. She's writing a new narrative of who she is and pretending the wilderness never even happened. Which is why Teen Van scares her so much. It's not just who she was, or what she did. It's the truth. It's the truth of the fact that her little world she's been living in where she's just a normal video store owner isn't even true, and she has to live with the fact that all the actions she took? She chose that path. The wilderness didn't make her do that, survival didn't make her do that. It was her choice.
