It is advisable to cool temperature-sensitive items using gel coolants and dry ice. Gel coolants are indeed preferable over wet ice, as wet ice is heavier and has the potential to leak during the transit process. A bit of advice would be to freeze coolants, products and the insulated container (if possible) prior to packaging.

If dry ice is your material of preference to keep the temperature in check, then there are certain requirements of the IATA that you must be aware of before you proceed. You will be required to provide correct identification, classification, markings and labeling on outer packaging. Dry ice is considered a hazardous material during air transport and requires special handling.

Frozen items to be shipped must be strictly bound by material like pads, cellulose wadding or paper towels etc. to absorb any liquids that is likely to surface from the package.
