📍St. John the Baptist Parish Church
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calamba Church is also known as the Saint John the Baptist Parish Church. The church was built in 1859 during the Spanish colonial era. The church is known as the place where Dr. Jose P. Rizal was baptized. His original baptismal records has been found in the church archives and has been preserved and refurbished.

What I like about Calamba Church is the replica of Garden of Gethsemane complete with a life size statues depicting the religious events that happened in the garden.
The church has become one of the most visited churches in Laguna during the Holy Week. So if you're planning to visit, keep in mind that you need to come early because the main problem that you'd face would be looking for a parking space.
HOW TO GET THERE?
Tumblr media
From Manila (Pasay city to be exact), board a bus heading to Calamba city. Once you reach the Calamba Central Terminal, ride a tricycle and tell the driver to drop you off in front of the Church.

CALAMBA, LAGUNA
A stone’s throw from Calamba’s town plaza and parish church stands the replica of the house where Jose Rizal was born on 19 June 1861. The seventh child and second son of Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso, Rizal would become a renowned political novelist and thinker; skilled eye doctor; gifted artist and architect; linguist and teacher; and a hero who lived and died for his beloved country.
A two-storey stone and hardwood structure with narra floors, and red tile roof, the Rizal home has a spacious parlor with wide capiz shell windows, a library, dining room, three bedrooms, a kitchen and pantry leading out to a balcony. Located on the ground floor were the servants’ quarters, workroom, and a storeroom for food supplies. The backyard was planted with various fruit trees, which Rizal frequently mentioned in his writings: atis, santol, tampoy, makopa, plum, balimbing, and kasuy. A small nipa hut served as the young Jose’s hideaway.

CALAMBA, LAGUNA
On August 28, 1742, Calamba became a pueblo, separating it from Cabuyao. Progress set in and since then development started to flood in continuously. Calamba became a component city on April 21, 2001 by virtue of Republic Act 9024. According to a legend, the word “Calamba” was taken from the phrase “kalan-banga”.
Kalan-banga, Rizal Shrine and St. John the Baptist Parish Church are the three famous spots you can visit in Calamba.
📍KALAN-BANGA
The Banga has a relation to the legend of Calamba’s name. According to the legend, it started with a legend of two Spanish soldiers or guardia civils who got lost as they passed through what is presently Calamba. The soldiers came across a girl carrying a jar of water and a stove. The soldiers unconsciously speaking Spanish and, with imposing tone to cover up their situation, asked the girl where they were. The lady, however, who only spoke her native dialect, thought they were inquiring about what she was carrying and uttered nervously the words “kalan-banga,” which means clay stove for “kalan” and water jar for “banga.”

The Spanish soldiers had difficulty pronouncing it and called it Calamba instead. The Banga is the memoir of the said legend. It’s also known as the “World’s largest Claypot” and also included in the city’s seal (Calamba History,Philippines).
There are some people who said that the Banga was originally owned by Jose Rizal and they also say that it is just small before (Rizal,Gloria).
At present, the Banga is visited by many tourists and it’s just in front of the St. John the Baptist Parish and beside the Rizal Shrine.
📍Rizal Shrine
If you’re interested in Filipino history this is a great place to visit and learn about the life of Jose Rizal. The site is not that large but it is fairly well maintained and informative.
