im getting close to catching up with the anime (those who know) so to prevent myself from running into oncoming traffic i'm drawing this instead

Writing sometimes feels like a strange disorder you just kind of cope with by being creative. Like your brain randomly decides to dump a million-piece puzzle in front of you and says, 'Solve this or we will never think of anything else, ever.' You toil away for years and by some miracle you solve it, and it's the most fulfilling, exhilarating feeling in the world. It's perfect. You did it. And your brain is like, 'OK, here's my idea for three sequels and a spinoff.'

I totally second the idea that Gon’s “dates” are not sinister in any way. From other scenes in the story, we know he doesn’t have much understanding of or exposure to sexual behaviours (other than that one instance of Hisoka being a pervert in GI, but it’s not totally clear whether Gon realises the nature of that behaviour, as he’s visibly creeped out but that could just be a reaction to the feeling of (blood)lust - it’s Killua who tells the clown to stop). For example, in ch. 262, just before the palace invasion, there’s a conversation about Meruem’s movements and whether the presence of a woman could be affecting his behaviour, namely because of his instinctive drive to procreate. All the characters except for Gon cringe at the very real possibility that the King could be mating with Palm, and are glad they’ve considered it before potentially seeing that with no warning. Meanwhile, Killua notes internally that Gon has no idea what they’re talking about - before verbally warning him that he needs to worry about his own mission, no matter how they find Palm. Gon is completely focused on her safety (and of course Kite’s wellbeing) in this situation, which also creates a comedic dynamic as he’s the only one totally serious and focused on his goals, as the others momentarily squirm in discomfort.

So it’s evident that Gon is still immature in his idea of relationships, platonic or romantic, while Killua has little experience but more “street” smarts. This is what is funny about ch. 217 — Gon has been on dates, but we know that he’s too innocent to understand what that really means in an adult sense. Killua acknowledges this too, until he probes further and seems to have his worst fears realised in Gon’s answers. This peaks when the ambiguity in Gon’s line “they took me into town and taught me a lot of stuff”* highlights Killua’s worry that the dates were mature in nature. As well as being fucking hilarious, this is such an awesome character moment of Killua’s for me. Since we mostly see him presented as a very advanced, superhuman young assassin, his admission of “my god… he’s so… experienced”** reframes him as a silly lil 13yo boy who feels insecure about his own lack of experience. Not to mention this whole scene’s implications of Killua’s feelings towards Gon (but that’s a wholllllle other post hehe).

I think the humour in this scene truly comes from the fact that both boys are too naïve to know what the other is thinking. Gon is confident, if only because of his lack of knowledge. Killua has more knowledge, and is therefore more uncertain. This dynamic is a reflection of their wider respective characters, which makes it even more believable and a funnier interaction. If people can’t appreciate that for what it is and just think Togashi writes perverts for the heck of it, then I think it’s kinda lost on them lol.

idk how exactly to talk about this bc theres a lot to be said but its always very surprising to me how many people think that part in 217 where gon talks about going on dates with older women on whale island is like a genuine indication of sexual abuse or predation. like i mean considering he prefaces it with "well mostly [ive been on dates with] aunt mito" i figure part of the reason why this scene (and much of the subplot) is framed humorously is bc its meant to be ironic. like part of the intended humor comes from the idea that gon has a very loose understanding of what a "date" is and killua doesnt pick up on it at all bc hes too busy doomspiralling. again theres a lot to be said about that subplot regardless, its just always puzzled me why people take that comment 100% at face value

Man, we have got to stop treating art like it has an expiration date. That show stopped airing? Doesn’t mean it can’t haunt your every waking thought. Everybody’s into this album, but you don’t have the energy for new music right now? It’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready. That movie’s fifty years old and indie as shit? Incredible, you have the chance to share it with folks who might never otherwise feel that particular punch of delight. Books don’t go bad. Shows inspire fandoms decades after they’ve wrapped up. We’re still looking at cave paintings and statue work from ancient times and letting the joy of creation bring tears to our eyes. That’s the point of art. It’s as close to immortality as we ever get. Why try to give that magic a shelf life?
