It’s Not Just Him
Summary: Astrid realizes that Hiccup isn’t the only one slowly adopting draconic mannerisms.
Rating: Mature
Words: 840
Author’s Notes: The Hiccstrid that I promised!
Wrote this one a looooooooooooooooooong time ago. This one-shot has been finished for months and I just let it sit there, in my pile of finished fics, because I like hoarding fics.
But it’s here now. To make up for all the Zelda fics I posted this week.
Constructive criticism is appreciated!
Enjoy!

Number One:
I’m Scared
A modern Hiccstrid AU
Astrid chewed her lip as she waited for the answer. She rocked on her heels, hugging herself as she watched white coats and dull colors walked by. She looked to the ceiling, pushing her tears away and down her throat. She looked at the people gathered around her; Ruff and Tuff sat silently holding cups water; Snoutlout leaned against the wall, lightly pulling at his sweatshirt strings. Fishlegs quietly looked to the floor, occasionally glancing up at her.
Valka walked over to the worried blonde. She put her hands on her shoulder, trying to calm her nerves.
“I’m scared, Valka. What if- what if he... oh, gosh.” She hung her head, her stomach clenching. She swallowed thickly, “what if something goes wrong?”
“He’ll be fine,” Stoick’s deep voice washed over her.
“How do you know?”
“Cause he’s a Haddock. He’s stubborn.” Gobber tried to make Astrid smile.
“It was just... all so normal. He was cutting metal, and then...” her voice trailed off. “I went away for one second, and...”
Gobber frowned; he had heard the blood curdling scream, and Astrid’s worried cry. He hadn’t seen the accident happen, but he knew the pain and the fear.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Astrid chewed her lip as she followed the doctor into the room. She fiddled with her ring, oddly more scared now than she was waiting to hear from the doc.
“You have a visitor,” the kind doctor quietly said as she let Astrid into the quiet room.
“Hey,” she hesitated at the foot of the bed, observing all the machines.
He frowned, “it’s okay to come closer, Astrid. I didn’t lose my head, just my foot.”
“Oh, Hic.” She almost lunged at him, pulling him into a tight hug. “Are you okay? What can I do? Do you need anything?”
“I’m fine,” Hiccup was still a little groggy, but smiled nonetheless. He braces himself for what was coming.
“Good, because.... what on earth were you thinkin’?! Getting close like that! You could be in a wheel chair right now, or your whole leg could be gone, or you could’ve died!” It was as if saying it out loud made her finally realize the severity of the injury. She put her hand over her mouth as a sob escaped.
“Hey,” Hiccup tugged on her arm, bringing her to the bed. He hugged her tightly, “it’s going to be okay. They’ll give me the proper care instructions, I’ll go to PT, and everything will be normal.... I might need your help around the shop and house first thing.”
Astrid sniffed and nooded, “anything fo you, Hic.”
Hiccup held her hand and ran his thumb over her promise ring. Being an apprentice welder, he couldn’t afford a fancy engagement ring. He was relieved in Astrid said she’d marry him in paper rings. “This is just a small bump, okay? Just an adjustment.”
Astrid nodded, snaking her arm around his middle. “I’m glad you’re mostly okay, though. And I’ll do anything to Help you. Even clean toilets.” Cleaning toilets was Astrid’s least favorite chore, but she’d do it for Hiccup.
“Do something for me now?”
She lifted her head, “anything.”
“Kiss me and tell me you won’t stress yourself out too much.”
She smiled, “I promise to try not to get too stressed out.” She then kissed his lips, and settled into his embrace again. “You’re right, Y’know. About the little bumb? That’s all this is. Just a small setback. But we can beat it.”
“We can beat it.”
And they did. It took about a month and a half for Hiccup to get used to the fake foot, but he was greatful he had a girl like Astrid. Once he was back to work full time, he took his fiancée to her favorite restaurant as a thank you. He also got her a proper engagement ring.
It gets to be a lot sometimes. Running a village, being a husband, being a new father. Most days, he’s pretty sure he has no idea what he’s doing, can’t help but think that it would be easier if…
Dad were here.
Toothless were here.
… he had some guidance.
Of course, these feelings don’t always stick. He knows he’s turned out to be a good chief, someone his people revere and have come to love. His relationship with Astrid speaks for itself; they’re good together and good for each other. As for fatherhood, well it’s trial and error for everyone involved. Astrid had no more of an idea how to be a mother than he did a father, but they’re figuring it out together.
But there’s no denying that some days are just harder than others, and his shoulders don’t feel quite strong or broad enough. It exhausts him, and at the end of the day, he’s left quiet and contemplative, staring ahead without really seeing anything.
He doesn’t even hear Astrid settle behind him or realize she’s there until her weight is pressed against his back. Her strong arms are loose about his shoulders, fingers tangled together over his heart. He lets out a sigh, breath he hadn’t realized he had been so reluctant to let go, and leans himself back against her. She nuzzles into the side of his neck, and presses one quick kiss there.
Sometimes words aren’t needed.
She knows it can be hard on him, but she does her best to let him know she’s here for him, whenever he needs her.
If you have just looked at the picture, this is pretty big news, and I don’t think this was revealed on April 1st, either! Since it was in a different language on Instagram, I had to translate it into English to see what it was saying, I hope you’re surprised and excited as I am for this!
It is revealed by Dreamworks, despite the crazy pandemic going on, a new HtTYD Spin-off series will be coming on Netflix in April next year, after Dreamworks and Netflix worked together on Race to the Edge (2015-18), and they’ll be joined alongside Universal Studios on this too (plus two seasons have been confirmed)!
It will seem for this series, the story will follow the lives of Hiccup and Astrid, and their children, Zephyr and Nuffink, along with Toothless, the Light Fury and their offspring, the Night Lights, sort of like with Homecoming.
I know that some of you may think it might ruin the franchise, but I think it will be great to see our fav couples with their children again, plus it would make a Greta epilogue series just as Steven Universe did with Future!
Fingers crossed if we get more info soon!
Legend says that when the ground quakes, or lava spews from the earth, it’s the dragons, letting us know they’re still here, waiting for us to figure out how to get along. Yes, the world believes the dragons are gone, if they ever existed at all. But we Berkians, we know otherwise. And we’ll guard this secret until the time comes when dragons can return in peace.
When Life Gives You Timbits - Chapter 6
Read on Ao3: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6
If any of you have developed a craving/curiosity for timbits, I (Laura) highly recommend it. Well, this is the last chapter. We hope you enjoy! PS: @celtictreemuffin my awesome co-author has beautiful moodboards on her chapter posts, so check them out :)
Being at the airport two hours early was usually supposed to be good, but Hiccup was dreading every second he would spend in Boston without Astrid by his side. The long line for the check-in counter was normally a nightmare to endure. Ironically, today it was deciding to go fast.
He’d decided to wear his Harvard shirt and jogger pants again for the plane ride, because there was no point in sacrificing comfort to look like he was going to a no-longer-existing business meeting.
Waiting in line with him was Astrid, who played with her braided hair. She found Hiccup staring and smiled weakly. “Guess you’re off to Canada, then,” she sighed.
