Going from School to College

As school life comes to a close and students step into the college life, the thought of transformation can be overwhelming. Being polite will help you gain new friends. Do not try to force yourself or your views on others or be adamant about choices and decisions. Respect others for who they are.

‘Shelved Knowledge’

Many students who graduate college and pursue careers, face tremendous amounts of pressure in seeking jobs and/or settling in one. This applies to students who find jobs that are related to their field of study and also those who enter a different career path. The students could have been very creative, studious, hardworking and top scorers. What is it that poses such difficulty for them when it comes to facing the outside world? When in college, the syllabus is set. Everything that is required to secure first-class marks is provided for. In addition they acquire guidance from their professors. Students erroneously believe that completion of the syllabus and making safe high marks will guarantee a long and prosperous career. Unfortunately this is not the case. With the relentless inflow of knowledge and the ever expanding field of science and technology, up gradation is a must. When students go out into the world seeking jobs, the knowledge gained in school and college becomes stagnant. They cease to learn. This is where the phrase ‘Shelved Knowledge’ enters. As and when they stop learning, they become unstable. Self doubt slowly makes its way into their minds. This makes them extremely vulnerable and insecure. Coupled with this, the pressure of earning and work stress bog them down and a lack of confidence sets in.  

In the initial stages, when students enter occupations they need help. Sports in Education

With the increasing level of competition in the academic arena, especially in the Indian scenario and in the various educational groups and institutions in India, the stress levels of students have gone up. Being caught up in the vicious cycle from school, to home, to tuition and back to school, children do not have the time to unwind and get their physical exercise. The idea of playing has become synonymous with wasting time. Mere education prepares the children on an intellectual and knowledge basis; however, without a healthy body the mind will not be able to function to its best. Sports play a very important role in the education of students. Firstly, sports help to develop a strong body. Fitness increases the ability to do more work and helps to cope up with the stress from studies. A healthy body can take more pressure without buckling under the stress in comparison to a body that is not physically fit. Secondly, bringing sports and education together promotes the self-motivating spirit to venture out, learn independently and explore the world. It makes students take responsibility for themselves and makes them think on their feet, making them alert at all times. When the lessons learnt in sports are applied in education, the learning becomes immense and the opportunities unfold without barriers. Team work and discipline are collaterals while playing sports. Mindfulness of others and the understanding of how an individual gels with the team takes place automatically once on the field along with a team.

Playing sports creates the opportunities to mingle with people and make new friends as sports is one of the best ways to break the ice. It instills qualities such as tolerance and patience and teaches how to handle pressure. Leadership qualities, team spirit, and dealing with victory or defeat are the people skills learnt in sports.

Many people attempt something they have always dreamed of doing, but at the slightest glimpse of hardship or failure, they withdraw and lose hope. Where self doubt arises, where own skills and talents are doubted, there begins failure. Dreams are often killed by doubts than failure. Looking at the lives of people who have achieved their goals teaches us one thing - they never gave up hope or courage. They never stopped believing in themselves. They faced whatever life threw at them with a positive attitude. What better example to look at than Thomas Alva Edison, an inventor who developed many devices that play a major part in our daily life. His inventions include the motion picture camera, phonograph, and the electric light bulb. He was always met with failure. In fact failure was the norm in his life. However he never gave up. He said, “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” This positive attitude is what has etched him in the books of history as one of the greatest ever inventors and scientist.  

Everyone has doubts and insecurities, but it must not be allowed to affect one’s aspirations. Alpha Group of Institutions aims to cultivate this positive attitude and outlook in the students. Doubting oneself is the greatest enemy one can have and the greatest hindrance to achievement. This doubt prevents the primary and most important step in achieving – attempting. Entrepreneurship in Indian Education

India is emerging as a global phenomenon and is expected to rank among the top economies of the world by 2025. Among the most important question we have to face is our entrepreneurship skill. In nations like USA children are encouraged to think creatively and independently and come up with fresh ideas and innovations.  Our country focuses more on rote learning which is not known to be imaginative or inspirational.

The overall economic situation is also not conducive to nurturing entrepreneurship and innovation. India’s universities the place where it all begins do not have strong links with industry. The curriculum which is offered does not match what the industry requires.  Entrepreneurship education determines the health of the economy, which is why it is important to initiate entrepreneurship courses early in the curricula of Indian Business Schools.

While there has never been a definite answer to the question of whether entrepreneurship can be taught, with many arguing that the entrepreneurial spirit is innate.  But effective entrepreneurial education does foster the right attitude towards starting an own business and gives the necessary skills to do so.

In the current scenario, the challenge is to overcome the myopic treatment of entrepreneurship education and focus on long term objectives instead of finding stop gap solutions. The key is to develop entrepreneurship course as a foundation course in business education with the course covering managerial aspects in new ventures. The aim should be to develop an entrepreneurship education system in India and to work out an improvised design of the course where further concepts can be added later on.
