ok but i love it when the true nature of a world is incongruous with how the beings in it understand it. having “natural magic” be somewhat of a misnomer is so interesting and would make sense considering the way people would guess at how it works and (idk how to put it) place emphasis on what’s familiar to them. hence, people (are they people, is it not humanity that made this misconception or the attuned themselves?) see an attuned and say that their power is natural whereas forces of the world were overlooked in that sense

like, no one in universe would probably be able to explain it as well as you, the creator, would bc of their limited perception of the world

on a further tangent, its also great when characters are straight up wrong bc they saw a glimpse of what magic is/the unnatural/etc and invent a mythos in their minds (Ricky from nope thinking he’s some animal whisperer, the Grey family from my ocs thinking they’re blessed by a well)

I'm interested in knowing how the animal whisperer and well blessings come into fruition! As for the misconception... that would be under the cut because it's long-

Almost all beings from all four categories have this misconception! The term 'beings' are used because some species aren't so... pro-human and take offence to being considered a part of humanity. Some species who dislike humans are:

- The super old-school/supremacist elves (who look down on what they consider to be poor imitations of the perfect beings AKA elves)

- Dwarves (who are really just sick of humans viewing them as 'mini humans with more hair')

- Dragons (who were pushed to the brink of extinction in Steruleang by the Unois Empire alone)

- Animal spirits (whose species were/are hunted by humans)

The thing is that if humans were crueler, more willing to invent destruction, more willing to seek harm just for personal amusement, most species would be critically endangered, if not extinct (such as Steruleangi dragons during the Unois Purge). The Traveller's Guide mentions that ambition is one of humans' strongest assets, and it's not really based on personal opinion but rather, based on historical facts

Actually, Trigis, Viegin, the Proélefsi-ranked celestials, Alexia, and Hadir will be able to explain magic as well as me to others as the first two possess omniscience, while the remaining were given that knowledge. The main reason why almost everyone doesn't know more about the truth of magic in the universe is because:

Viegin doesn't share it with anyone, preferring to use its abilities to fuck around with others solely for its personal amusement

Trigis is viewed only for its role as Death, so those who don't know it personally wouldn't know about its omniscience nor be brave enough to ask for the truth

The Proélefsi-ranked celestials were given this knowledge by Trigis after learning that Viegin didn't bother telling them and Trigis went "why not" when these celestials asked. These celestials then didn't tell the lower ranked celestials about it as the knowledge didn't affect them (considering that they're Bionects) and to prevent them from accidentally changing the course of humanity (a valid concern given Aiden's role in Ilias' life)

Within the Hourly Twelve, only Alexia and Hadir has asked Trigis about it. As for why only these two have asked:

- Alexia has been around far earlier than the first elf, to the point that she personally knows the 11 saviours that the horoscope are named after (she's the last one, though this isn't mentioned anywhere in history books). As someone who has been around (and mostly alone) for several millennia, naturally she has asked Trigis about a lot of things

She doesn't share with others as she has witnessed first-hand how too much of something (in this case, time) could easily drive someone to madness (10 out of the 12 original chronovens), and fears that anyone knowing the truth might be too much for them to bear

- Hadir's naturally curious about what she is and that led to a mind-blowing explanation on how magic actually worked, but she accepted it fairly quickly so it wasn't anything mentally ruinous

She doesn't share it with non-chronovens because how is she supposed to explain them that Death is real, knows everything, and that what most beings know isn't exactly true? She also doesn't want to explicitly reveal her current status as a chronoven, all 12 of them prefer to keep that part of their identity a secret unless it's with someone they can trust. Danielle's the exception as she doesn't want to risk yon revealing the truth about chronovens

- The remaining chronovens don't really care about how magic works and have other concerns that matter more to them

As it is closer to a setting where things don't exactly have an explanation, there is a lot of hand-waving which is why Viegin can just snap its fingers and create new species simply for the fun of it-

Magic is a term used to refer to the four types of abstract forces present in the world that are derived from their environment (in different ways). The four types are natural magic (this is a misconception), arcane magic, spiritual energy, and rune magic, with three out of four being derived from Ratein's ley lines

Why I specify Ratein instead of 'universe' is because there aren't any ley lines in the other planes, but it is possible to use magic in the other planes, just that it takes much more energy to do so as more energy is needed to connect to Ratein's ley lines. The energy needed to do so in different planes depends on how far they are from Ratein. A guide on planes that need the least extra energy to the most extra energy, from left to right, is found below:

Underworld/Celestial Plane -> Astral Realm -> Mirotein

Common belief is that magic is inherited, but the actual explanation to why some species living in Ratein 'inherit' magic is because their bodies are naturally attuned to Ratein's ley lines, making it far easier for them to cast magic. The latter group is called Attuned to differentiate them from species who are typically not able to naturally use magic throughout their lifespan (Non-Attuned), whose existence is tied to elements (Bionects), or those who don't fall under any of the three categories (Lithers)

Because almost everyone believes that the Attuned all born with the ability to use magic, the magic they use is erroneously called 'natural magic'. This error is further reinforced as the Attuned can use abstract elements such as emotion, teleportation, or mind control magic, though most of them are elemental in the typical sense. Ironically, the name they used to describe themselves is the one thing accurate to reality

Bionects are different as their existence is tied to natural elements, so beings such as celestials, demons, sylphs and raijūs would fall under this category. They're different from Attuned as while their abilities appear magical at first glance, it's lesser of 'they exist, therefore they can use this specific element' but more of 'this element exists in the universe, therefore they exist and can use this element'. Hence why their 'magic' isn't actually magic, but it's far easier to classify them as natural magic rather than calling them abilities

Non-Attuned are basically beings (mainly humans and animals) who aren't attuned to the ley lines, making it extremely difficult to use magic without additional support. Support mainly revolves around making the abstract tangible, such as through incantations and sigils, or runes AKA arcane and rune magic

Lithers are beings that don't really fall under the three categories, such as dragons who can use 'magic' (e.g. they're born with organs that allow them to breathe fire) but aren't attuned to the ley lines, animal spirits, tengus, liches, and chronovens. It's considered a hand-wave category for academics who are too lazy to properly research and classify them accurately

Generally magic enjoys a universal appreciation to it, but for the Non-Attuned and possibly Lithers, it's harder for them to draw on the ley lines for magic as both supported magic types (arcane and rune) require understanding, focus, and accuracy. Which means a lot of studying is needed and for those who aren't willing to put in the effort... well, chances are that the arcane magic cast would go really badly and/or the rune magic may bring about unintended abilities...
