Bro what do you MEAN the art book for the Live Action httyd has a whole page where they brag about the fact they casted 3 whole actors with Limb Differences?? They were cast in minor background roles that 95% of audiences will forget about before the credits are finished (if they even noticed their existence at all)!!
You know who WASN'T played by a disabled actor? Gobber, the major character who is a Double Amputee. He was played by an able-bodied man (though don't worry, they took ~inspiration~ from the fact he's got a bad knee and switched which leg he's missing! #representation) Or how about Hiccup, our literal protagonist? Sure, he spends most of this film with both his legs, but the sequel is already greenlit, and unless it bombs horrifically they'll absolutely make the third film too. So even though he spends about 70% of the film series as an Amputee, he's played by an able-bodied actor too!
I'm so fucking tired of seeing able-bodied actors cast to play Disabled characters. I mean, we *JUST* saw this with the Live Action Snow White deciding to make the dwarves cgi abominations instead of just hiring Little People. But it's fine guys! It's not like Disabled People are hugely underrepresented in media - especially kids/family media - but we're expected to not only be content with the crumbs we're given, but to actively celebrate them as if they were full course meals. Excuse me for not wanting to heap praise onto Dreamworks for having three background actors with Limb Differences when their major Disabled characters are played by able-bodied men dressed up with special effects and cgi to cosplay being an Amputee.

Just finished watching the Live Action How To Train Your Dragon.
I've had a lot of thoughts about this movie since it got announced way back, and they've fluctuated wildly the more we heard and saw of it. While there's a lot I could say, I'll keep it brief. This film exceeded my expectations (though they were, admittedly, very low). It was an enjoyable enough watch, and though it definitely had it's clunky moments and occasional narrative missteps it wasn't enough to tip the overall viewing experience into a bad one. It's not as good as the original - obviously - but right now I'd rank it quite considerably above literally anything that's come out of the Dreamworks side of the franchise since the end of rtte, so that's something, at least.

Do you ever stop and think about how small Hiccup was?
Like, think about it from the perspective of Furious. You're this ancient, agonized creature. You loved a human once, but you've outlived your love for him, by so many aeons that you can barely even remember what he looked like—all you remember is his name and that you did love him. But not anymore. Because you've lived so long and been in chains so long and stewed in your rage so long that you're too broken to feel anything soft anymore. All you can do is rage and rampage and shape the world with your fury, and you have enormous impact because you have exactly that much power. You're so powerful and majestic that even the most terrifying dragons cower before the uncontrollable wildfire of your hate. You are ultimate, and everyone knows. You're this massive creature, older than time, who's seen centuries of abuse and pain and loneliness and grief and born it all, understood it all, you're the size and age of a mountain, you are grand and great and terrible, you're colossal, gargantuan, you're cosmic—
And you have to reckon with this tiny newborn child. This little infant who can't comprehend what you've lived through and can't comprehend how long you've lasted and what you've lasted through. He's microscopic compared to your size and age and wisdom, he's so tiny and insignificant and young and foolish that he should have no impact on you whatsoever, you should be able to crush him under your feet, he should be as significant as an insect, as dangerous as a mouse, as powerful as a mote of dust, because he knows nothing and he's seen nothing and he is nothing—
But this tiny little human being that only just entered the world, so small and young and meaningless you shouldn't even know his name, has the capacity to tear apart your entire universe.
And there is nothing you can do to stop him.

It's been so long since I've drawn the bog standard Dreamworks Toothless (or posted anything), so here's a silly little doodle of the silly little guy

Old sketches of Hiccup.
In my old sketchbook I had a whole page full of little pencil doodles of my favorite wild characters. Those who speak to the animals and understand the tides and wind. Those who are chased and cornered. Those who fight just for survival or Those who fight for something more. Those wrapped in fate and circumstance. Those who have chipped teeth, bloody knuckles, scraped knees, with skin coated in grit and determination beyond death.

Toothless pressed his forehead onto Hiccup's forehead and gazed deeply and solemnly into Hiccup's eyes. They stayed there, snout to nose, without moving, for about sixty seconds. Hiccup had to blink a lot because the gaze of a dragon is hypnotic and gives the unnerving feeling that it is sucking your soul away.

This was the first gouache painting I tried to do back in December. I really loved painting the Windwalker’s wings as feathered so I think I’ll keep that idea around!
