Plan Musawarat Es-suffra Trip The Ancient Meroitic City Of Temples In Sudan.
Tumblr media
Want to know more about the ancient temple city of that early Meroitic period? If so, then you should come and visit the beauty of Musawarates-Suffra for a change! It is situated in the Western Butan area in Sudan.
The Meroitic period mainly refers to the Meroë rise, which is the new center of that consolidated Kush kingdom. This area lasted from the 5th century BC to that of the 4th century AD.
This kingdom reached as far as the Sennar, located in the southern part of current Sudan.
It is quite as far to the north as the Nile’s Second Cataract.
This ancient temple city was established around the 3rd century BC in the valley, which was located just outside the Nile valley, and in the semiarid Keraba landscape.
Great monuments to check in:
There are various monuments that you can get to see during your trip to Musawarates-Suffra. Among the lot, the major ones that deserve special mention are listed below:
Small Hafir and the Great Hafir, which are two main reservoirs
The Lion temple, which was made using the time of early Meroitic king Arnakhamani
A labyrinth structured building complex, namely the Great Enclosure, was made using mid-3rd century BC.
The famous Great Enclosure:
The Great Enclosure comprises multiple temples, even though the dedicatory deities are still a mystery. Here, the central buildings are mainly connected to solitary structures by various long corridors and multiple courtyards and terraces. In total, this area covers around 13.5 acres of land.
Even to this date, the archaeologists have to come across any formal decorations. But some studies have already discovered multiple animal sculptures, with most of them featuring masons, pilgrim marks, and graffiti on the walls of the complex. These sculptures mainly mark the pictorial and Meroitic or the Greek script.
