DID you know...V-Day is actually ‘Saint Valentine Day’?
SAINT VALENTINE DAY is deeply ingrained into our secular culture; from an ersatz holiday to an $18 billion dollar-per year industry. Yet few folks know that its origins are firmly rooted in ancient Christian history.
Originally designated as the ‘Feast of Saint Valentine’ in 496 AD by Pope Gelasius, Valentine (probably called Valentinus-an extension of the Latin ‘valens’ which means strong & effective) is believed to have been martyred on 14 February 269AD under Claudius II for illegally marrying Christians in Rome, then refusing to worship the Emperor. While awaiting his execution, his jailer, named Asterius; seeing the man was pious; is said to have asked him to pray for his blind daughter. When she miraculously regained her sight, the jailer converted to Christianity and was baptized, along with many others. Valentine wrote a note to the jailer’s daughter, signing it, “from your Valentine”, and was then beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate of Rome on 14 February, 269AD.
The day was further honored by Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English literature, in his poem, “Parliament of Foules”; where he commented on the mating ritual of wild birds (90% of which choose one mate for life):
“For this was Saint Valentine’s day, when every bird of every kind that men can imagine comes to this place to choose his mate.”
After Chaucer, literature began associating Saint Valentine’s Day with courtly love and romance. This eventually developed into the 18th-century English traditions of presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending Valentine greeting cards.
Even this favorite St. Valentine Day signature addendum has a Christ-based origin. The Greek name for Christ, Χριστό, begins with the letter “X” which in Greek is called “Chi”. In Medieval times, the “X” was called Christ’s Cross, or “Criss-Cross”, and eventually became a common accepted abbreviation for the name Christ. Such is the origin of signing a Valentines’ card with an “X” to express a pledge before God to be faithful, and an “O” to seal the pledge with a kiss of sincerity.
SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN? In today’s “Post Christian” culture, the ‘elites’ would have you believe Christianity is based only in myth and unsubstantiated lore; and should now be disregarded. Such is not the case; as historians are finding more proof supporting Judeo-Christian Biiblical narratives & tradition every day. The Valentine account tells us in all of life -romantic relationships included- there is joy, but there WILL be trouble…but with faith in GOD thru Jesus Christ and the leading of the Holy Spirit, we can weather ALL the storms of life!
