Ren was already working out in their head faster ways to travel, gates to Elfhame, through it, pinpointed all around the world. They didn't say it, that they could potentially be anywhere once they knew where the where was and could trace the gateways through the mountains to those spots in the mortal realm, but they were thinking it.
Distance was less a physical issue than the emotional one it felt like right then, welling up in their stomach.
Of course she was leaving, starting new somewhere else, it wasn't like Martin who wouldn't leave because his roots were dug into that place so much the thought wasn't even on his mind. Even if Ren had tried to find reasons to say Elfhame would also be Martin's home too, was their own home and it was hard missing it, and it was an ugly little feeling for a split second, jealousy over what Paz could do easily ask Ollie. Ren pushed it down into the mire of other emotions rattling around inside them.
"Oh," Ren nodded; had they known it? Was it something that just hadn't sunk in? Or refused to?
Maybe they hadn't wanted to hear it.

"Civilized is a perspective," Ren countered, because naturally they were going to complain about having to move from that spot. "Most things I've read about mortals doing while being 'civilized' is the last thing I would call it." But they drug themselves up, dramatic, yes, and followed along after Seamus.
They didn't mind the dogs, although living with Martin and Mim had developed a healthy appreciation for felines in them, but foxes were canines so it was a familiar sort of kinship. Plus animals really didn't just automatically dislike them like people seemed to think would be the natural reflex of any mortal creature.
"Nice to see you're still delightfully unpleasant," Ren chirped as they sat the box on the table - mind you this was not an insult as they enjoyed how short-tempered Seamus was. It made being around him interesting when the man was so distinctly cut and dry about his opinions and who he was.
"Where's your friend? Somebody's been around here often enough that I can smell it," Ren added, since most people they knew forgot how sharp their senses actually were, and it was fun to pester Seamus about any topic that presented itself. "And here I was thinking you were out here all lonely by yourself since Nick decided to get all domestic."

Only months, it felt like hardly a breath, a moment, to Ren, but that was how it went in the mortal realm; time passed so quickly, so full of life; so swiftly changing always.
But their straying thoughts about outfits were brushed away by her words, if only because they hadn't actually considered the after. They didn't recall Paz mentioning it before, and Ren was aware of the mortal custom of sometimes spending time after the wedding as a vacation of sorts to themselves as a couple. It was different than what they knew, that period was shorter, more of an outing, than the year following a union in the Mountainlands where the couple might choose to be around others if they wished but it was viewed as a transgression to argue otherwise if they preferred to be left alone for however long during that year.
But a year for the fae was a short frame of time, so it felt like nearly the same concept.
"I would have thought you'd take some time as far away as possible," Ren mused with a chuckle, because Italy really wasn't that far away, and the world was big.

"Isn't that up to the Hollow to decide? As a whole; if the crown should go back there that's not really a single person decision," Ren replied, or if it was a one person decision, obviously fairies had their own culture when it came to how things were handled and they couldn't speculate too much there, that one person was the one who ruled. That was the point of having a figurehead; to avoid the potential fallout of decisions that affected everyone being made by one person.
Ren wasn't sure how important the crown was or wasn't to the Hollow, clearly not important enough to be guarded over if it was offered up to the town, but it was significant as a symbol, they assumed, between town and the Hollow.
"I'd agree it doesn't make sense for something important to the Hollow to be held by the town." Ren reasoned, by design they were a territorial creature and it was unfathomable really that a crown would be removed from its kingdom at all, but their brow furrowed because it wasn't a matter of being removed. "It was given to the town, right? Nobody demanded it? It's a decision that could be undone, sure, if it needs to be, and then it's an issue if the town refuses. But you don't know if they would, yet."

"I can feel the scowl a mile away," Ren pointed out, although the reason behind it might have been a dozen things. Seamus was exceptional at the grumpy old man thing, it was one of his more amusing skills, actually. One that Ren greatly enjoyed making a source of entertainment when the situation presented itself.
Such as an afternoon visit to Seamus' growing farmstead under the guise of discussing their shared interest in the crystals that Ren had been leaving to Seamus to find interested parties for since he had years and years of contacts in moving magical artifacts. And Ren knew there was nothing resoundingly powerful about the few crystals they handed off to Seamus, but strong enough to gain interest and, more importantly, the wider the net those little glittery bits of magic spread the more anchored their own magic in the mortal realm became.
Business ventures, yes. Very financially useful business ventures that served that twofold purpose, although the finances bored Ren so he left that part to Seamus.
But mostly the trip was to harass him, because Ren missed him, and Ren didn't like missing people. Didn't like them being so far away, even if Seamus was a stubborn old goat likely to last out the end of the world just fine on his own.
"I even brought you muffins," Ren reminded him with a gesture at the box on the porch, "even like you enough to not bake them myself." They left that to Martin, yes; less people were likely to end up with food poisoning that way by accident.
They shrugged though, reaching for the drink next to them - it was unfortunately not strong enough to do anything with their natural alcohol tolerance but it was a social thing really, having a drink with a friend - and stretching their legs out to hang off the edge of the steps.
"Was just about to tell you my ulterior motives for coming out here," they added, admittedly shamelessly pleased over the prospects of catching Seamus up on the recent updates in their life, and nosing into his business; what had that stubborn old goat been up to?

"Well, I'd like to think so," they chuckled; she could have asked a lot of things really and Ren would have found a way to accomplish them; that one was relatively simple. At least so far as the logistics; it wasn't simple for her to need someone to take that place, they knew that.
They might have deeply disliked Paz's parents and relished the thought of her actions against them but they did know how the emotions conflicted so sharply over their absence in those important moments. They didn't have any delusions over their own parents attending their wedding either, so that made the request even more important.
It was something that, humor aside, struck a softer chord with Ren; being a part of that moment in her life when moments would always seem to go by too quickly.
Tumblr media
"I won't even complain, much, when you boss me around at the wedding." They added with an amused roll of their eyes; they wouldn't complain at all, in fact.
And it all felt real then, with that conversation, hard to believe, in a way. "So, it's not going to be long now, is it?"

Ren was unpleasantly familiar with how thin the line was with mortals and acceptance at times, it was a fact that kept them cautious about the truth to what they were. Not because they worried about looking after themselves, few things in the mortal realm made Ren wary, but because of the way that, even at their best, their strongest, mortals were terribly fragile in comparison. It was too much of a risk.
Seelie were, largely, better accepted, but full acceptance seemed rare, even less so outside of town, from what Ren had gathered in their study of history.
Vidia likely was right that the fairies could look after themselves just fine in Enchantra, in wild places, but it wouldn't have been those places Ren would have been careful of, if they had been Seelie.
"You have the luxury of relative safety here, if the town wasn't protecting you in legal ways you'd all be fine in Enchantra, it's your home, but that's no guarantee people outside of town wouldn't just destroy a forest. Even a magic one." They mused, pausing again. "It's frustrating sometimes, yes, but Clarion has to weigh the value of an object and a gesture against the safety of her people. It's not ideal, nothing is going to be though, not entirely. You look after your own, sometimes that makes for complicated coexistence."
They could sympathize with Vidia being upset, but Ren also thought more from their own experience; hard decisions, a kingdom that also had to make some concessions to thrive.
"Have you asked?" They had no idea, really, all the details of the arrangement with the crown. "Have you given them the chance to show that goodwill? I'm not saying it shouldn't be in the Hollow if it's important for the Hollow to have it back, just that people can be very dense about knowing a problem is a problem until they hear it. Then you know what you're dealing with better."

"The mayor?" Ren had disliked Eboshi, Ren was somewhat indifferent towards Hades, honestly neither has ever struck them as a very good leader. But leadership was different to mortals; paperwork and laws, a lot of complications and contradictions that seemed designed to make people bad at the job. "Yeah, she was a problem."
Eboshi had hit a raw nerve though, probably because her stance towards Magicks was sharper, Hades at least Ren didn't see directly as a threat to 'dangerous' Magicks.
"I don't think that was the town's choice, and people did argue against it...I heard enough complaints from birdbrain about how miserable it was at town hall over that," Ren mused; Medes usually complained anyway, but they'd been pretty certain the owl was going to stress molt over it all.
Ren paused for a moment.
"Didn't the fairies give the crown to the town though? Can't you ask for it back? Or, Clarion can, I'm assuming." Ren thought it was probably something that fell to the person in charge. Vidia was clearly upset though, their brow furrowed watching her; trying to hunt for the root of that frustration beyond just the crown.
"I don't know a whole lot about fairies, but I do live in that forest part of the time; the Hollow is a little self-isolating, isn't it? I get why, you don't want anything damaged when that tree is so important to you all," Ren knew the Hollow was carefully tended because of how important the magic was, it made sense. "But town is too, isn't it?"

They were leaning about the vast differences in traditions along the way, some were more perplexing than others, but Ren had been fine with indulging whichever ones Martin wished, because their end goal was to make him happy and erase any chance of their own Court testing that bond. Their own traditions were easier to work into things, very few Mountainlands weddings were built on specific details. And they had discovered there were dozens and dozens of traditions that mortals followed based on religion, culture, even personal preferences.
This one they knew, it was a very foundational one in several cultures, Ren had researched enough to recognize it. Changing lives, stepping into your own, someone giving you that support and faith in knowing you could take that step.
Of course it made sense, someone had to replace the absent, and unwanted presence of her father. The surprise came more in her asking them to do so. They had wondered, uncomfortably, if the demon incident had left a scar in their friendship that might not heal.
It put that thought firmly to rest.
Tumblr media
They didn't try to hide the moment of surprise, or the smile after. Not a bold one, as if they were ever subtle really, but right then it was softer, warmer. "Of course," they agreed, the gaps could fill in later, she could tell them exactly what to do - she was among the very few who could without them bristling in annoyance - and they were glad to.
"Don't think about them," Ren added, although their tone lacked the usual snap that came with talking about her parents, it wasn't the time for that. "This is about you, and Ollie, and it's going to be perfect. You know I'm there for whatever you need."
They couldn't offer the promise in words, but it remained there, unspoken.
