Journal entry #6
I agree that storytelling can make scientific research more impactful in society. If it is done well, storytelling can bring public attention to important scientific discussions that they didn't know or care about before. I also believe that these movies tend to sort of ‘dumb it down’ to people who don’t quite understand the issues in the first place. If overdone, I can see how people would get the idea that these scientific issues are ‘just fiction’ or ‘just a movie, just a stupid story’. But I do believe that if done well, story telling can really bring attention to issues and scientific research.

My three favorite myth/legend/lore adaptations:
One of my favorite adaptations is the Percy Jackson novels. These are based on greek mythology. It follows the son of Poseidon as he goes through various mythological challenges and conflicts. I think it’s a really cool concept and I from what I understand of the greek gods it adapts them very well and seems to keep to their characters.
Another favorite adaptation of mine is the Disney movie “The Sword in the Stone”. This is based off of the legend of King Arthur pulling the sword out of stone and claiming his rightful place as the King of England. I think this is a really cool interpretation of it that shows the legend in a kid friendly way that is really entertaining. And from my understanding of the original story it seems to be fairly accurate. A story told by Merlin about how the King of England came to be.
One more favorite adaptation of mine is the Disney movie (a bit of a theme here) “Hercules”. I have always really enjoyed the way Disney tells the story of Hercules in this movie. It is not the most accurate but it does tell it in an interesting way. It’s funny, cute and very musical and I have always loved it.

Journal Entry 4
For my Myth, Legend, Fairytale project I am thinking about doing one of the fairy tale stories from the book “The Tales of Beedle the Bard. The stories in this book include “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot”, “The Fountain of Fair Fortune”, “The Warlock’s Hair Heart”, “Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump”, and “The Tale of the Three Brothers”.
“The Tales of Beedle the Bard” comes from Harry Potter, the most well known being “The Tale of the Three Brothers” which gives us the Deathly Hallows. I think the short Fairy tales in this book cute and interesting. I haven’t quite figured out which story I want to do yet. I have narrowed it down though. I plan on doing either “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot” or “The Fountain of Fair Fortune” because I think these both have very interesting messages that could be translated into a modern setting.
I am worried about making this a modern setting. I wanted to challenge myself by using these stories that are entirely about witches and wizards and magic. My main fear is not being able to translate the story well enough into a modern setting, getting the same meaning and message behind it.

Childhood Influences
When I was younger, I was influenced mainly by books and things I would see on tv.
I grew up reading, to the point I got an award in preschool for doing it the most. I read things like Junie B. Jones, Amber Brown, and The Spiderwick Chronicles. Then onto things like Fablehaven, Percy Jackson, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I grew up reading a bit ahead of my grade level and I loved it, and it really got me into story telling. I could dive right into a story, a whole new world and go on wonderful adventures with really cool characters. I had what most people would consider an ‘overactive imagination’ which helped me to create my own stories. Of course, they weren’t Harry Potter level stories but to a 3rd grader they were pretty neat. I found a journal from elementary school where we would write stories and I found one about a guy ghost who was chasing these girls so they ran into the girl’s bathroom so the ghost couldn’t follow them. Reading has always been a big part of my life and a big influence on my life.
Movies and tv were also big influences when I was younger. At home I would watch things like SpongeBob, Fairly odd parents, Jimmy Neutron, Kim Possible. Almost anything on Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon network, or Boomerang. But I also spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house when I was younger. At grandma and grandpa’s there was a few less options, so we mainly watched PBS kids, METV and Disney movies. So, things like Clifford the big red dog, I love Lucy and Cinderella were on all the time. I loved watching shows and movies with my grandma, my love for Disney and musicals came from that. All of it was a giant influence on my life.

What I hope to get out of this class:
With this class I am hoping to understand different creative processes and use them to my advantage for my future. I am hoping to be able to understand how different industries in media use these creative processes and figure out what way works best for me and how I could fit in to the media world. I am also hoping to learn to find resources and to learn how I could find inspiration from different places.
What drew me to this major:
I am currently a screenwriting major with an English minor, but I didn’t start out that way. At first, I was a photojournalism student and was interested in media arts and film, so I started a screenwriting minor. After taking a screenwriting class last year I realized I loved that a lot more than I did photojournalism. After I started my screenwriting major, I decided to take an English minor. Movies and Books are two of the things that make me very happy so being able to pursue both is really cool to me. I hope to one day be able to make movies based off of books.
