Assessment 3-
In regards to researching images, we were inspired by the technology and icons of different eras, and how recognisable these time periods are to these specific objects/ideologies. These images are specific to films, tv shows, and icons of the 70′s, including technology.
-The Brady Bunch -tv series
-The Man Who Fell To Earth-Film
-Scooby Doo-Tv series

Concept statement
My final artwork is focused on the concept of ‘glitch’, following my previous artwork. My previous work explored the notion of a natural glitch and the possibilities of how that could be represented. The initial thoughts that came to my mind when considering the term glitch were digital malfunctions and technological breakdowns, however through exploration in my previous work I have found new ways to continue the idea of a natural glitch.
My work ultimately investigates the natural and manufactured deformities of food, combining the initial assumptions of a glitch by transforming them through replicating a digital process. My final project consists of 10 images, which were printed from a computer, then dipped in water, then transferred onto gloss printing paper by using pressure. This process began with the idea of natural glitches being transformed in a digital way. I experimented with many techniques on how to convey a natural anomaly in a digital manner, specifically through using Photoshop. To break away from my previous project, I decided to focus on food rather than roses. I was interested in the process of how food can transform due to its production process, whether it is natural or manufactured. I used this idea to create my own version of food malfunctions using Photoshop, each item being a new creation and way of presenting the glitch as one of societies most central elements, food. After experimenting with different kinds of food and transforming them, I decided to do some research to take my work further.
The weekly concepts gave me new ideas and works to research, as well as different ways of approaching my final project. During week 3 we focused on ecologies, which I found interesting as it pushed me to consider my artwork as a process. The food items aren’t how I wished to finish my work; I wanted the main focus to be on my process. Through week 6 we discussed uncreativity in class, which prompted artworks to research. Andy Warhol’s ‘Campbell Soup Cans’ (1962) stood out to me as I had used Warhol as my main inspiration for my previous artwork. This piece relates to my work, as it uses an everyday item to convey something greater by presenting it in a new way. Like soup cans, my work focuses on ordinary food items, yet transforms them through manipulation. The week 8 concept of value also made me reconsider my work, as the food items were very bland and normal without their deformities. Alex Seton’s ‘Washout’ (2008) forced me to consider the importance of materials in altering an artworks meaning and importance. This prompted me to present my works as images and moments captured, rather then leaving them as digital entities. Other works such as Nike Savvas’s ‘Showtime’ (1999) influenced my final work. Initially I thought her installation was a visual representation of a glitch, however I realised that it focused mainly on the relationship between colour and light. This inspired me to consider the importance of colour and how that could impact my final work.
After researching, I wanted to focus on how to transform these glitches further; I wanted the objects to be distorted and unidentifiable. Through experimentation I discovered the process of transferring printed images. This procedure led to the objects transferring in bizarre and unrecognizable ways, heightening the sense of the glitch and a breakdown in a system. My final artwork is a representation of a natural glitch, highlighting the uncontrollable variables within my process that create the glitch. The images and final product were altered depending on how much water was placed on the prints and how much pressure was applied. The images were ultimately a reflection of the glitches that can occur and the extent to which variations ensue.

These are the images chosen for my final work. I needed to figure out how to present them in a way that incorporated both the natural glitch and my initial idea of a glitch as a technological breakdown.

Nike Savvas- ‘Showtime’ (1999)
I found this work really interesting, as I initially thought it was a glitch. I had to do further research to discover that it was actually focused on the relationship between colour and light. It influenced my work, as I started to focus more on the importance of colour and how that could affect my final work.

Alex Seton’s ‘Washout’ (2008) was shown in class, as an example of value within art. I really liked this work, as it demonstrated the importance of materials within art, and forced me to consider the direction I was taking, and think more about the materials I would use for my final product.

I previously researched Andy Warhol for my past assessment; however throughout our weekly discussions in class we learnt about the concept of uncreativity and Warhol’s work was shown as an example. This particular work relates to mine, as I’m focusing on food items and creating something new from an ordinary object. This artwork also forces me to consider our consumer driven society and how we only choose the perfect items, like selecting a ripe banana over an unripe version.

These images are of a gummy bear I chose to edit on Photoshop that enabled me to create my own version of a natural glitch. I played around with different ways of making it interesting. This idea of our food glitching often happens in the manufacturing or development process, which i found quite interesting.

These images are a representation of a natural glitch. For the first image I wanted to copy the previous experiment, yet break away from the rose symbol. I chose tomatoes because they are vibrant and food is a main focus of today’s society. The second image is on a deformed tomato surrounded by other perfect ones. I was really interested by this, as the tomato is a visual representation of a malfunction in the items growth, and a natural glitch. I chose to explore this further, as these images are quite plain.

Experiments: For assessment 2 my initial experimentation was derived from my previous poster. I wanted to play with the idea of the rose again and see how I could adapt this concept of a natural glitch in a new way. I started to use photoshop and explore further.
