How to Combat Stress
Juggling down from one task to another and while you are doing that, another task is being dump to your table, you are still working on the current task and yet you received a new one, making you not just physically stress but also mentally and emotionally. Yes, stress is a normal part of our life but handing it can be difficult. Sited on this blog are information on what causes stress and ways on how to handle it.
What is stress? Stress is the feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure. It is our body’s response to pressure. Everyone experience being stress and it is often triggered when we experience something new, unexpected situation that threatens our sense of self, and even when we feel we have little control over a situation. Our body produces stress hormones that trigger a fight or flight response and activate our immune system every time we encounter stress and that this respond quickly when we come face to face with a dangerous situation.
What causes of stress and how does it affects our life performance? Everyone has different stress trigger but work stress is the number one cause of stress, according to surveys. Some of the work related stresses that employees encounter are being unhappy with their job, having a heavy workload or too much responsibility leading to longer working hours, having poor management and many more. Life stresses like the death of a love one, loss of job, getting married and moving to a new house, increasing financial obligations, having a chronic illness or injury, traumatic event (like natural event and violent against you or your love one) and emotional problems (depression, anxiety, guilt and low self-esteem), can also trigger stress. Sometimes, stress can also be brought by our own doing especially when we worry about things that we cannot control.
Here are some simple ways on how to relieve or combat stress;
1. Exercise and eat healthy foods

Aiming for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity everyday can help to reduce stress. Eat healthy foods and as much as possible lessen or avoid vices like, smoking, drinking and especially doing drugs. Doing physical exercise can help manage the effect of stress by producing endorphins that boost your mood and people who exercise regularly are less likely to experience anxiety than those who don’t exercise.
2. Get enough sleep

Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep to recharge our body and mind. If you have trouble sleeping, avoid having to much caffeine (a stimulant found in coffee, tea, chocolate and energy drinks) also, high doses of caffeine can increase anxiety.
3. Write it down (having a journal)

For some people writing things that give them stress is their way of reducing it. Also jotting down the things that you are grateful for can help in relieving stress.
4. Listening to music

Listening to music has a tremendous relaxing effect on our mind and body. Music can distract attention, by doing so it divert your attention away from the things that give you stress.
5. Spend time with family and friends

Sometimes having the social support of your family and friends can help you though out stressful times. Having someone to laugh and talk with can help improve your mood.
6. Learn to say no

Saying yes out of guilt or inner conflict can cause stress to a person. Learning to say no to more requests can be the biggest favor you can give to yourself and to that person asking the favor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying no, especially to things that you know will give you anxiety and discomfort.
7. Take time out

Take time to relax and practice self-care. Treat yourself for a vacation or to fancy meal. Another way is to disconnect yourself from social media, especially if it causes you stress and discomfort. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Maintain a balance between your responsibility to others and your responsibility to yourself.
8. Get help
If worse comes to worse and you continue to feel overwhelmed by the stress, don’t be afraid to ask or seek for professional help. Seeking for professional help does not mean that you’re a failure.
Although stress is already a part of our everyday life and it can sometimes overwhelm us, just like every problem that has solution, there are also ways on how to reduce stress. So are you going to let stress and anxiety defeat you?
