Food Security in New Zealand
UN101: Responding Crisis
                                               New Zealand to UN
Background and Main Problems
According to National Geographic, climate change is a long-term shift of the pattern of the global or regional climate. It is a problem at the international and global level already. Climate change causes a lot of troubles not only for the environment but also for the whole world as well. Now, every different country has a crisis of their own as impact of climate change. For New Zealand, there are mainly three different crises we have. Waterways pollution, rising sea level, and water and soil degradation. During this period, the degradation of soil and water quality became a mass problem in New Zealand. The latest NZ Ministry of Environment and Stats data, Our Land 2018, found 192 million tonnes of soil are lost to erosion each year. Erosion is perhaps the most important problem concerning the soil and the productivity of the land we use for agriculture, horticulture and forestry that is actually really important toward food stock in New Zealand and also another state. Erosion impacts productivity by destroying topsoil which is the richest nutrient component of the soil. It also impacts the quality of the local rivers by rising sediment and loss of nutrients. Moreover, New Zealand also faces some challenges in ways to maintain food for all people around it. We call this case as food insecurity where it’s a crisis based on the pattern of food intake caused by lack of resources such as money or even other resources (Nord, 2005).
 Country Policy and International Actions
As a country that ranked fifth in the world’s richest countries, New Zealand doesn’t really go through hardships during the climate change that caused food insecurities. Almost half of New Zealand’s territory is used for agriculture and horticulture needs. Being one of the countries which main commodity export is dairy products and meats, New Zealand contributes a lot in saving other countries that are currently going through a food insecurity where the foods there lack of nutritions, Philippines for example, yet our country focuses more only on the exports. We think forming a food policy council to drive and advocate for work regarding food insecurity is one of the best ways to get the problem solved.
Every existing work can be supported by the food policy council to be collaborative and all broad. Being placed in the 19th list of the countries that have a good food security, New Zealand Aid Programme collaborates with FAO in the aspects that could help others such as on economic development, human development especially from health and education, responding to climate change, even building safe and secure communities. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has spread the aspects they identified, called four pillars, regarding food security as availability, access, utilization, and stability. New Zealand is planning to just be flexible, yet we still must make sure that we fit  those four securities at most times while also preparing for the future.
 Proposed Solutions of The Topic
Under such a problem and status quo, every country is entitled to zero hunger and other food insecurities problems. But however, it does not mean that every country can easily solve this problem. New Zealand believes that it is such a dilemma problem, while a lot of countries scream about their hunger and New Zealand as the fifth richest country, so it means New Zealand needs to spread their wings to help each other for the common good. This of course must not neglect the economic and environmental conditions from within the country. Therefore, New Zealand is proposing a few outlines of the solution as below:
1.      New Zealand must commit to Sustainable Development Goals, that is a goal to ‘end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture’ by 2030.  It means that New Zealand needs to push agriculture more to maintain zero hunger toward another country. It can be export food and any other.
2.      New Zealand is a leading member of 46 countries involved in collaborative global research to grow more food without growing greenhouse gas emissions. With this way, new zealand can keep growing to reach any goals in food stock without broke the environment around New Zealand.
3.      New Zealand run study tours for farmers and technical training for scientists and greenhouse gas inventory specialist to raises awareness of the impact.
4.      Monitor the prevalence of household food insecurity among New Zealand children and household food insecurity as an outcome indicator, to evaluate the success of a range of policy actions. This way is one of solution to minimize food problem in New Zealand. And the ministry believe that it works well, even it needs time.

MON FILOS
Tumblr media
Filosku jeneng e Kak Bryan Nathanael, terus clue pertama nya itu “Mang Dudung”. terus setelah nanya2 ke kakak2 HI 19 yg lain, ternyata Kak Bryan itu susah moveon, dulu pas IRFEST 2019 dia dr negara Indonesia, terus faksinya Dauntless. Aku nanya ke kaka2 HI 19, “Kok Mang Dudung?” Ternyata, setelah aku telusuri, Kak Bryan lah yang mengenalkan anak2 HI 19 yang rantau kepada bubur terenak di Surabaya (rumornya, krn aku belum pernah nyoba HEHE), yakni Bubur Mang Dudung, makanya clue utamanya itu Mang Dudung. Kak Bryan juga doyan banget bola, apalagi tim Setan Merah (meskipun lagi drop banget kualitasnya WKWKWK), gara2 pas IRFEST pernah pake jersey MU HAHAHAH.

Brief Summary UN 101
Amelia Putri S - 072011233091 - New Zealand
United Nations, or UN for short, was first created to continue the League of Nations which failed due to conflicts during Great Wars. United Nations was created with combating Axis Power as its main goal. On 1st January 1942, Franklin D. Roosevelt suggested the name. Once it was fixed, 26 allied countries had a meeting in Washington D. C., including sponsors (US, UK, USSR) to sign the declaration of United Nations. They have held several meeting with their main goal that had changed into creating world peace and minimizing conflicts all over the world. United Nations was established on October 24, 1945 and its headquarter is placed in New York 10017 United States. In 2020 the countries that joined as members have reached the number 193. The first elected secretary was Trygve Lie, yet Gladwyn Jebb was the first one to serve as the first. In total, UN had changed its general secretary nine times, the current one in charge is Antonio Guterre.
UN’s meeting is named as United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA for short. It usually holds meetings which take place at the headquarter. Each meetings is usually divided into two sessions, regular and special sessions. Regular sessions are hold annually on Tuesday of the third week of September and ended on the agreed date. This session talk about general stuff but also used by the countries to tell their concerns about their main problem regarding their own countries. There is aslo special sessions, yet they have no specific schedule. Usually, the delegates are notified two weeks which means it’s a meeting that would be held by Security Council, if it’s ten days before means it’s a meeting that’s lead by either the General Assembly or a member state, and if it’s notified the day before the meetings means it would talk about the emergency matters that has the highest urgency. The meetings usually start with address by the general secretary, followed by the president and heads of the state before going into the main discussion and debate session, which is later followed by the voting. Each member state has one right to vote. For Security Council, there’s a veto rights given to its five permanent members; China, France, United Kingdom, United States and Russian Federation. They can use their veto right to cast a negative vote, then even the almost-final decision would fail immediately.
UN has six main organs. The first one is General Assembly. As United Nations’s representative and main deliberative organ, this organ also have the right in policy making. All 193 members of the United Nations are also under General Assembly. UNGA has six committees in total; Disarmament & International Security, Economic and Financial, SOCHUM, Special Political, Decolonizationm Administrative and Budgetary, and Legal. The second one is Security Council which consisted of 15 members; China, France, United States, United Kingdom and Russian Federation as five permanent members, and 10 other member whom are a non-permanent ones. Security Council’s  role is to ensure international security and peace, to approve any changes made to the United Nations charter, and to recommend the admission of new United Members to the General Assembly. The third one is Economic and Social which consists of 54 members that are elected by the GA for overlapping three-year terms. Its role is on economic and environmental fields; policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations, and implementation of internationally agreed development goals. Next is International Court of Justice which role is to settle important disputes that are submitted by the States and to give advisory opinions regarding legal questions. Then there is Trusteeship Council which was made to provide international supervision for 11 trust territories which had been administered under seven Member States and to ensure that adequate steps were taken for the sake of a country’s territories. The Trusteeship Council has been inactive since 1994. Lastly there is Secretariat that does the substantive and administrative work of UN under the order from the main organs,it also provides the administrative guidance.
Considering United Nations is a giant inter-governmental organization countries around the world are allowed to join, yet in order to get accepted they have to undergo a few process first. The first step is submission where countries send a formal letter and application to General Assembly, agreeing to all the obligations under the UN Charter. The second step is review that is done by Security Council. To get the recommendation, 9 out of 15 countries of Security Council must give affirmative votes and none of the 5 permanent members says otherwise. The third step is vote where final voting takes place after Security Council forwarding the admission to General Assembly. Two-thirds of  majority vote has to be accomplished in order for a country to be accepted. The last step is admission, the country will immediately become a member once the admission’s resolution are accepted.
UN has as special membership, often called as the permanent observers, which consist of non-member states and IGO along with other organizations. The current non-member states are Holy See and State of Palestine because they have unclear status of their sovereignty. However, they are considered special members as they usually receive an invitation to observe the work of the General Assembly. Meanwhile, organizations like ASEAN, Red Cross, European Union and such are considered as special members, they are granted permission to also observe the work and annual sessions of the General Assembly. UN also has five permanent members, or P-5 for short, which consist of China, France, Russian Federatioan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

MIND MAP INTERNATIONAL DAY PROJECT
Tumblr media
Amelia Putri S - 072011233091 - New Zealand

Summary International Day Project 2020
Tumblr media
Amelia Putri Sukmawati - 072011233091 - New Zealand
Rethinking International Community’s Role and Contribution in Climate Issue
Indonesia berkontribusi menangani iklim global melalui Conference of the Parties (COP) UNFCCC.

Rising Sea Level in New Zealand in The Eyes of International Relations
Nowadays, war doesn’t occur between states in the actual field. A lot of nation-states are more frightened and worried about another type of war by that the war in context means war in economy, diplomacy, and so forth. When in fact, there is one most important thing that we face, yet only some of the states are aware about it. The case that we should underline is the environmental issues, which is very dangerous both for the lives of many people and for our planet. One of the issues is Rising Sea Level (RSL). According to IPCC, the definition of Rising Sea Level is height of the sea surface in a certain sea which is measured either by observing the solid Earth surface or by geocentric reference.
The scope of international relations, on its development, has widened thus the focus of world politics is not only concerned with high political issues such as political alliances, military security and economic cooperation. On this day, International relations no longer overrides the lowly political issues to which humans are most closely related to. Low politics have many kinds, such as human security, human rights, environment, technology of information and communication, as well as many others medium to achieve national interests. From that, we know that RSL is one of low political issues that occur in this world, but this doesn’t lessen our responsibility to face it well and wisely. Environmental problems are long-term, have global impacts, and cross national boundaries, so multilateral cooperation is needed to overcome them
Come to the fact that Rising Sea Level has been happening all over the world. The IPCC’s 2007 and 2013 reports pointed the coastal areas as the most vulnerable to climate change-induced effects on sea levels. Rising sea level is one of the problems that happens all around the world, not to mention New Zealand also got the impact. RSL come along with other serious risks including changes in groundwater salinity, increased probabilities of the spread of infections and disease,  reduction in agricultural productivity, and severe strain on the aging wastewater and other public infrastructure systems (Binder 2011; Selman and Daigle 2011). New Zealand’s activity and infrastructure mainly located in coastal areas. Thus makes it vulnerable to coastal catastrophe such as erosion and floods. New Zealand's oceans absorbs 90 percent of the heat from ongoing climate change. According to the Ministry of Environment, the surface of New Zealand’s sea rises on average by 1.7 mm per year from 1900 to 2008, including the expansion of ocean water while combined with the water coming from the melting of icebergs. those are some of the effects of the increasing Earth’s average temperature.
According to the Ministry of Environment as well, the local government already has responses for the rising sea level. New Zealand completed the valuation of coastal hazards and developed maps that shows which areas are going to possibly affected for years ahead. We also include the restriction on the development around coastal areas, planning for coastline retreat, rejecting permissions for any project to build construction around coastal areas, and also disapproving the construction of sea walls. Many councils are creating resources and tools to help with planning around flooding and sea level rise. Waikato Regional Council, for example, has created an online coastal inundation tool that helps give a general indication of the areas that may be at risk. Greater Wellington Regional Council has also created a website with a dynamic maps of areas that prone to be affected by sea level rise. A new system for calculating land elevations has made fresh estimates of the numbers of people at risk from rising sea levels.
In conclusion, RSL in this entire world is coming up right now and may be injected into every possibility. It will bring danger soon enough and must be treated immediately. It also threatens the situation in New Zealand, because some lands in our country are in a circle of danger. We know that most of the place in New Zealand located in coastal areas, that means if RSL can not be prevented as soon as possible, New Zealand will sink sooner or later. This environmental case is one of low politic issues because it contains basic things that important in society. Hence it requires diplomacy and a good government system to solve it. We also have been getting some ideas and suggestion, as described above. We will try our best to resolve this case immediately and create a better world by prioritizing environmental safety, to save everyone’s life precisely.
