Let's Talk About Videos: Everything is Golden in Xia Junsu's "Flower"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From the "Flower" music video by Xia Junsu. Rights: CJESJYJ, 2015)
On March 2, 2015, Xia Junsu of JYJ returned to his throne with the music video for "Flower" (featuring Tablo of Epik High). The song is on his third solo album also titled Flower, and there are thirteen songs in total.
Though he's capable of any genre, the album especially showcases Xia's specialty: heartfelt, emotional ballads.
In the music vid. for "Flower" (and like in "Tarantallegra" and in "Even Though I Already Know"), we're invited again into Junsu's world: odd but mesmerizing landscapes, an entourage of writhing, choreography-loving, fur and leather-wearing servants, plus Xia's perfect hair and nails.
Yes, Junsu's silver, metallic nails were inspirational, but let's keep going and talk about this music video because we've got questions and possible answers.
JYJ Really Like Acropolises, Don't They? (And What Kind of Pronunciation-Sorcery is the Plural Word 'Acropolises'?)
Tumblr media
(From "Ayy Girl" music video by JYJ. CJESJYJ/Vitamin Entertainment, 2010)
Tumblr media
(From "Flower," CJESJYJ, 2015)
Setting
If you close your eyes and think back to the days of "Ayy Girl," you'll recall that the gentlemen of JYJ were dancing in a floating, crumbling acropolis/Greek structure in the sky. The city below was intact, but the "Ayy Girl" acropolis was falling apart. In "Flower," Junsu chose another acropolis to live in, but this time, all of the surroundings are gone and destroyed, while his acropolis is doing well and prospering.
The setting in "Ayy Girl" might have represented something like the ruins in Greece: yeah, the ruins are respected, full of history, beautiful, but they are still ruins with a questionable future. Will they survive for another decade, to be appreciated by new generations? Though we know how talented JYJ as a band is, at that time and given The Lawsuit (deserves capital letters) -- they may have been worried about their future as musicians.
In the visually-stimulating "Flower," Xia lives in his well-maintained, golden empire. It looks perfect, yet there's a possibility that his kingdom is made of the melted-down bodies of gold, robotic people -- perhaps the ones who served him were all robots. The warriors at the beginning deliver only the head of one of the robots who once served Xia, but he isn't phased or upset.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(One fish, two fish, what kind of fish is that?! Picture Source: "Flower," CJESJYJ, 2015)
Sure, he has a dinner composed of a cup of cafe latte C3-PO and prehistoric monster fish on a bed of fresh parsley, but it took one whole robot head to make that latte.
How to Get Away with Assassination: Did She or Didn't She Do It?
Tumblr media
(The goodness/humanity in Xia's character is awakened by the baby's crying. Picture Source: "Flower," CJESJYJ, 2015)
Xia, in the music video, is prospering, but he seems isolated, alone -- letting very few people close to him. This might represent how Junsu might actually feel in real life.
In the music video, the one he lets be the closest to himself is the one who seems the most innocent: a little girl. There's a possibility the ending shots of him hearing a crying baby was a flashback; Xia may have found the little girl when she was a baby and raised her like his own daughter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(What's she doing here, right now? Picture Source: "Flower," CJESJYJ, 2015)
All over the internet, most fans believe that she was the one who poisoned Junsu's kingly character. However, I'd like to say that she didn't do it.
He seems to be concerned about her watching and witnessing all of the questionable things he does. She smiles no matter what she sees, because of her innocence.
She's so young and unaware of evil that she might not realize when her surrogate father has been poisoned at the dinner table. She might even think it's some act or game.
We assume his character is assassinated, and leaves behind this child -- the flower, the last bit of innocence left in the entire world.
"Even if it’s a small light, the darkness can’t swallow it..." Xia Junsu in "Flower"
Tumblr media
(Golden Junsu. Picture Source: "Flower," CJESJYJ, 2015
Ultimately, Xia Junsu is able to subtly talk about his own possible struggles. To his fans, he may seem like he's got it all figured out and has achieved everything he set out to do as a musician, but to Junsu, maybe he still feels like this is a beginning -- and that personal healing and rebirth are on the daily To-Do List.
Although there are several ways to interpret this music video (such as 'more money, more problems'), there are three things we do know for sure: 1) Junsu's dancing is artwork-in-motion, 2) Any album by JYJ or a member of JYJ is worth owning, and 3) If something is too weird for even our Xia Junsu, then it's probably okay for you to put your fork down and not partake in what's on your plate.
Really, though, what kind of wine goes best with creepy, SyFy Channel, primitive fish, anyway?
Please support the super-creative Xia Junsu and his album Flower [now available on different music sites including Itunes.]

Let's Talk About Videos: Topp Dogg Goes Klassical Music 101 on Us in "Top Dog"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Topp Dogg in music video for "Top Dog." Pic Rights: Stardom Entertainment, 2014)
Trap-classical music has arrived.
On June 8th, 2014, Stardom Entertainment orchestrated the release of Topp Dogg's music video for their newest song "Top Dog." This brand-new composition is from the group's third mini album titled AmadeuS. And if you watch the high-energy music video, you will absolutely feel like you've been shot out of a canon.
Okay, now that the classical music references and puns are out of the way (or are they?), before we discuss the music video, let's give a little more background about the title track.
Member Kidoh is not in the music video; he is currently working on his solo album, which should be released soon. However, he is part of the track "Salieri" on this album.
AmadeuS is themed around the legendary rivalry between classical music composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. It is even more epic because much of the rivalry is still full of mystery -- and really, only Mozart and Salieri know what really happened.
So we'll sum it up, including both fact, myth, and info that scholars are still debating: Salieri was a talented and well-established guy who fought hard for his success, but then this kid Amadeus came along and he was a prodigy. Both worked hard, of course -- but it seemed to Salieri that things just came too easily to the genius Amadeus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yano and A-Tom of Topp Dogg in "Top Dog." Pic Rights: Stardom, 2014)
Some say that Salieri anonymously requested Amadeus to compose a requiem and gave him a very tight deadline to complete it. Supposedly, the stress drove Amadeus insane. In addition to that, another debatable myth is that Salieri poisoned Amadeus and that is what killed him.
What we do know is that both composers ended up not-quite-sane by the time of their deaths. However, Mozart's music would end up being even more popular after he passed away.
In "Top Dog," similar to how they faced off at the beginning of "Say It," shaggy-haired B-Joo (most likely portraying Amadeus) faces off with a fiercer-than-usual-looking Hansol (our Salieri here).
And thus begins Team Amadeus versus Team Salieri.
(Or the new generation of idols with a new sound versus the bands who are reusing the same sounds/themes we've seen lately).

Music Appreciation 101: Let's Talk About "Top Dog"
"Top Dog" samples Mozart's "Symphony No. 25 in G Minor," which he composed when he was only 17 years old.
First off, Topp Dogg get an A+ for concept and theme. They're making fans do research and look deeper into classical music -- maybe even fans who didn't have any interest in that TOPic before.
This next statement might be controversial, but I'll "say it": Topp Dogg's dedication to theme is helping them to glide their way right up there into the top few bands who actually think and choose a real, full-fledged concept these days.
Topp Dogg use the bad boy theme, but they aren't just bad boys: "Arario" from the previous album and "Top Dog" from AmadeuS actually tell a story and have an actual point. They aren't just bad boys because it's cool or because it's what is popular right now.
The commitment is there, right down to the ruffle collars and leather, so much leather (wait, what?).
The Song, The Video, Our Topp Dogg Maestros
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Seogoong and Xero of Topp Dogg in "Top Dog." Pic Rights: Stardom, 2014)
So when you take two best friends who happen to be Wizards and make them face off in some of kind of a desert, what ensues? Answer: one of the best light, magic, and laser shows this side of Final Fantasy the video game.
Forgive my language, but that was some darn good acting: Hansol and B-joo worked well with the special effects. Even though this looks like the same set from "Say It," everything seems better put-together. Plus, you get those awesome moments of Salieri/Hansol's "I'm getting desperate" face versus Amadeus/B-Joo's "I'm the cocky new kid on the block" expression.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(P-Goon and Sangdo of Topp Dogg in "Top Dog." Pic Rights: Stardom, 2014)
There was some worry that this song would be all beat and no hook -- that it would lack a particular line that people can repeat and get addicted to when they think of this song. Of course there's Xero's fierce refrain of "T-O-Double-P, D-O-Double-G," but can we just...can we just...Seogoong's (let us call him our Bach) "Do the right thing" lines are amazing. Vocals in this song are incredible, and Stardom gets a gold star because Nakta and P-Goon's great voices aren't auto-tuned here, which would have been unnecessary.
Xero definitely leads the dancing well (can we call him the Beethoven?), Jenissi's (he can be our classical composer Haydn) rapping is becoming one of the most recognizable raps in K-Pop, Yano and A-Tom are some of the most talented new-school rapping maknae lines out there, and to be quite honest, I didn't expect to be this impressed by the video and song for "Top Dog" -- but I am.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Jenissi and Nakta of Topp Dogg in "Top Dog." Pic Rights: Stardom, 2014)
A part of me really wanted more actual lyrics; however, in lieu of more lyrics, the dancer line gets more time to shine, so it's forgiven.
My only complaint (no, it's not about B-Joo's hair, which is epic and fab) is that I feel like there's even more to the story to be shown. A follow-up music video -- maybe for "Salieri" or "Amadeus" -- would be greatly appreciated someday, but for now, we're content with "Top Dog."
Now, we think it's important to issue a disclaimer: if you are currently studying classical music in school, and you are assigned to write an essay on Salieri and Mozart -- if you mention the words "Seogoong's blue hair," "ultimate laser and light showdown," or "epic Hanjoo battle," we recommend that a wee bit more research might be required.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Please support the bad boys from the South -- Topp Dogg -- during their promotions for "Top Dog" and AmadeuS! You can currently pick up autographed copies of the album (which includes a 72-page photobook) from MWave or YesAsia!
[UPDATE: Kidoh composed and produced "Salieri." A-tom, Yano, and Jenissi helped with the lyrics. Jenissi, Yano, and A-tom wrote a lot of the lyrics for "Top Dog." Kidoh, Jenissi, Yano, and A-Tom (plus DEEZ) wrote "Amadeus."]

Let's Talk About Videos: Getting Lucky with Block B in "Jackpot"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(From the "Jackpot" Music Video Starring Block B. Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
Those oppas are weird. ~ Line from Block B's "Jackpot" Music Video
On April 14, 2014, Seven Seasons opened the gates, gave free admission, and heralded the return of Block B with the music video for "Jackpot." The song "Jackpot" will be on Block B's seventh album (also called Jackpot). This mini-album includes a 112-page photobook plus the "rough" or guide version of the song "Very Good," as well as a second version of "Jackpot."
In 2013, Block B saw their first win on a music show with the song "Very Good." The band is back just in time for their third anniversary. In addition, they will visit the United States for the first time as part of their 2014 tour, and their newest reality show -- "Five Minutes to Chaos" -- is already underway.
But we are here now to shake our Dixie cup full of quarters, take a sip of our complimentary beverage-of-choice, slip another coin into the slot, and chat about "Jackpot."
I. Welcome to B.B World ~ Abandon All Sanity, Ye Who Enter Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Kyung of Block B in music video for "Jackpot." Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
In the "Jackpot" music video, is it a carnival? Is it a circus? The differences between a carnival and circus is an actual debate on the Internet (what isn't?), and if we throw in the "is it a fair?" query -- well, then things really get crazy.
Technically, a circus has animals, while a carnival supposedly doesn't.
Did anyone see any animals in "Jackpot?" No, I think not -- besides the dead birds, but we'll talk about that in a little bit. This leads to an even better question: if there are no animals at B.B World, then why does Kyung need a whip?
Indeed, Park Kyung's whip-happy ways are back in "Jackpot" -- actually, many details from "Very Good" have returned, harkening to an idea of some unified theme between the music videos.
II. A New Adjective: "It's very Block B-ish"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(B-Bomb of Block B with actress in "Jackpot" music video. Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
A discussion on the lyrics and style.
Many fans, upon first watching "Jackpot," don't quite know how to describe the video, but most of us agree that it is very "Block B-ish," which is definitely a good thing. I've seen a couple of fans saying that this video is not like Block B's earlier style, while I scratch my head in confusion and ask if they've viewed the band's reality program "Match-Up" or even "Match-Up Returns," or seen the "Nillili Mambo" music video or at least one version of "Very Good."
"Jackpot" is Block B. Very, very much so.
Before we move forward, let's talk about the actual song for a moment. Just like "Very Good," "Jackpot" attempts several different sounds at once, sometimes making the song sound a bit disjointed or like two different songs. "Very Good" did this very well; however, for some fans (not all fans), "Jackpot" might take a few listens to help you fall in love with the song's style.
Tumblr media
(P.O and Zico of Block B in "Jackpot." Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
By the second time I'd listened to "Jackpot," I appreciated it more. The chorus is wonderful -- especially Taeil's parts, and I would have loved even more singing from all of the guys from the Block.
The lyrics for "Jackpot" allude to a certain maturity and humility that "Very Good" did not. If you look at the lyrics for "Jackpot," Block B is calling their success so far as just luck, and they want to avoid messing everything up. They're saying that they still need to work hard -- luck only takes you so far. It's not so much about the criticism anymore -- in fact, the lyrics mention not seeking revenge against critics, but about just shaking the hands of the people who doubted them. There's even a part in the song that says success can sometimes imprison you.
"Jackpot" is about not listening to the bad things other people might say about you -- like telling you that you'll never succeed; you should always keep trying, keep running toward the finish line, and if you get lucky enough to succeed, appreciate what you get.
Of course, the "jackpot" also refers to three lucky sevens in a row: seven albums, seven band members, and their new record label, Seven Seasons.
III. Survival Guide to Living with Block B
Do you wanna b? Here's how! Tips based on what we learned in "Jackpot."
Tumblr media
(From Block B music video for "Jackpot." Pic Right: 7Seasons, 2014)
1) Be afraid of clowns. Or don't be afraid of clowns. Either way, just like in "Very Good," there will be clowns. [But look! That one clown in the blue suit is picking his nose -- I wonder which Block B member that is, huh? We know, we know...]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(P.O of Block B in music video for "Jackpot." Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
2) Take an interest in any of the following hobbies/topics: bird taxidermy, insects that can be eaten, lemons, insane piano-playing, knife-throwing, paper clothing, home hair-dressing/barbering, and random rings of fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Zico of Block B with actress Kim Sae Ron in "Jackpot." Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014).
3) Pass Zico's interview process. Process may include human ventriloquism and being part of his magic show. And no, "his magic show" is not a euphemism for something dirty -- we really mean magic show here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(U-Kwon of Block B in "Jackpot" music video. Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
4) Realize that every game played which involves a member of Block B will most likely end with a gun being aimed at someone (just like in "Nillili Mambo").
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Jaehyo of Block B in "Jackpot" music video. Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
5) Know that Jaehyo will try to Eliza Doolittle-you and groom you into being a fine young lady (or a fine young gentleman). He will succeed. And if B-Bomb calls you "dollface," he really means it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Taeil of Block B with actress in "Jackpot" music video. Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
6) Never forget that Taeil loves lollipops (learned in "Nillili Mambo" and in "Very Good"). If he tries to go all cannibal on you, offer him candy instead.
Tumblr media
(From Block B's music video for "Jackpot." Pic Rights: 7Seasons, 2014)
7) Learn tips from P.O on how to be a classy and elegant lemon tree.
Kudos, though, to U-Kwon for finally being the one to punch his attacker, rather than getting attacked this time like in "Nillili Mambo" and "Be the Light".
Notable Detail: On one of the banners, it says "New Kids on the Block" -- the title of Block B's first mini-album.
Finally, we have to applaud the stylists that costumed Block B and the actress -- Kim Sae Ron -- in the video. You, too, coordi-oppa Jaehyo -- great job, even if you only played one in the music video.
IV. Last Words About B. B World ~ Where All the Tickets are Only 50 Cents Each ~ And About "Jackpot"
We can definitely say that there is no video like "Jackpot" out there. The ending was perfect, too. Do you all remember last year when we thought "Very Good" was eccentric and different? No one but Block B had any idea that in comparison to "Jackpot," the video for "Very Good" could later be considered quite normal.
Well, normal for Block B -- whatever that means.
Tumblr media
Please shake it like a lemon tree and support the seven guys of Block B during their "Jackpot" promotions!

The Debut of Rookie Group JJCC: This is Just the Beginning for Double JC
Tumblr media
(Rookie group JJCC. Pic Rights: Billboard.com)
Someone ring the official "rookie alert" bell: new idol group JJCC has dropped their first music video and debut stages on us, so let's chat, shall we?
The group is managed by the Jackie Chan Group Korea (yes, for people who don't know already -- it's that Jackie Chan). JJCC or Double JC means "Jackie Chan's Joint Culture," which has to do with Chan's vision to reach out to and unite multiple countries in Asia through music. JJCC aims to be global idols in the future, starting in South Korea with plans on doing promotions in China and beyond.
So what do we know about these mysterious men? What do we think of the debut stages and the music video? And what should fans expect from JJCC?
Tumblr media
(JJCC. Pic Rights: Newsen.com)
Based on a report on Reuters, the members of JJCC have been training together for four years; however, some of them have been trainees in the industry much longer than that. Two sources say that Eddy had the longest training time.
Leader SimBA, member E.Co, member Eddy, and youngest member San Cheong are all South Korean, while Chinese member Prince Mak joins the list of Australian K-Pop singers (he's in company with sexy and charismatic performers: Hanbyul of LEDapple and Rome of C-Clown).
All of the band members are in their twenties, so no youngsters here. Many sources say that every guy in JJCC is able to both rap and sing -- we got a taste of vocalist Eddy rapping during his appearance on Master Chef Korea. We've also read that all members are at least 180 cm tall (5'9'') -- with E.Co being 186 cm in height (6'1''). Prince Mak, but also Eddy have been heard conversing with fans in English, in addition to Korean.
JJCC's first album has two songs -- their debut song "Everyone is Like This at First" (also called "At First") and the instrumental version of this song.
Tumblr media
(San Cheong and E.Co of JJCC. Pic Rights: Star News)
Their debut stages came before the release of the music video. One of the joys concerning rookies is that fans get to witness those debut jitters being gradually conquered.
First Stage: (at M!Countdown) A smiling Prince Mak gets a lot of love from the cameraman (he earned that karma because he missed out on being in the music video). Overall, the JJCC debut stage seemed more like they were testing the water: focused on finding the right camera, concentrating on the choreography, showing a "let's just survive this without mistakes" kind of vibe. However, it wasn't a bad debut. In a season of "bad boy" themes, a smooth song like "At First" stands out.
Second Stage: (at Music Bank) Prince Mak is still comfortably smiling. Eddy looks a bit like he has some nervousness, but maybe because his solo bit is so important to the song. San Cheong has more bounce in his step and looked more confident. E.Co gives us a this-is-not-a-game hair flip, he's getting into it.
Third Stage: (at Inkigayo) The fan chants are louder. E.co seemed pretty fearless by now. And camera, where are you going? SimBA isn't done with you. The leader SimBA -- a former model -- is gradually appearing more comfortable on the music stage, and he should, because who wouldn't fall for that deep voice, right? Hakuna matata, no worries, SimBA -- you got this (had to slip at least one Lion King reference in there, apologies to everyone). Awaiting when he will loosen up more on stage -- since whenever he smiles, little happy cartoon bluebirds fly around everywhere...wait, what?
Tumblr media
(JJCC. Pic Rights: Naver.com)
Okay, okay, okay -- let's take a moment to fangirl/fanboy over these guys. Eddy's got that hair and that voice and he was doing his thing on a cooking show. He's like right out of a romantic movie. San Cheong has those emotional eyes that you could drown in if you don't drown in your own feels first. Prince Mak's smile is so cute -- like he's thinking about puppies and flying a kite, all the time. Don't even mention his charming Aussie accent. SimBA's deep voice proclaims "I am manly, hear me roar" (indirect and unintentional Lion King reference -- again, sorry). E.Co is tall sexy eyeliner hair flip guy.
Ahem. Onwards.
The music video for "At First" is decent enough to introduce the world to JJCC. Its only downside is the lack of Prince Mak. According to an article on Newsen, Prince Mak was injured and even had to spend a good amount of time in the hospital, so he wasn't able to be in the video. Some critics say that the video isn't flashy enough, but let's be honest: it's only the debut vid, and the song is nice enough to attract fans.
So what can we expect from JJCC? First off, hopefully we'll get some stats on these guys soon -- birthdays, background, etc. (Jackie Chan, release the documents! Where are the files on these guys -- hidden on the private jet?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Newest band JJCC. Pic Rights: JC Group Korea [Official Teasers])
Some will imagine that JJCC will have it easy, since they are being showcased and spotlighted by a star like Jackie Chan, but like Eddy said during an interview, it actually adds pressure because everything they do -- on-stage and off-stage, good and bad -- will reflect upon Chan. They have the burden of representing his name and company well.
We can probably expect some kind of volunteer and charity work from JJCC, especially since Chan himself is devoted to humanitarianism and to environmental issues.
Although Jackie Chan is a worldwide celebrity and an overall likable man, we look forward to JJCC being known more for who they are as individuals and for their music -- and not just as the K-Pop band that Chan started. Anyhow, though, for many fans, JJCC was still love "At First" sight.
Please support the five men of rookie group JJCC! They will continue their promotions this week on the music shows :)

Let's Talk About Videos: 100% Puts the Pieces Together in "Beat"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(100% in the "Beat" Music Video. Pic Rights: TOP Media, 2014)
On March 16, 2014, TOP Media finally brought to life and published the music video for the newest song “Beat” (also known as “Heart Beats”) by 100%. The song is from the band’s second mini album memorably titled Bang the Bush.
First off -- yes, the album is actually titled Bang the Bush, but we can all collectively get our minds out of the gutter and put away our dirty Scrabble. When you order the album, some of your family and friends may think it's either a hard rock album or a grown-and-sexy movie. The meaning of the album's name is to surpass everything that has come before now. Upon research, another way of saying this is to "take the rag off the bush." Then again, if we put this in 2014 terms, it means "ain't this album swell -- fresher than the albums before this!" Okay, maybe that wasn't very 2014, but you get it.
Let's say something right now: the song "Bad Boy" (from 2012) by 100% is one of their best songs. It's now 2014, and that song is still powerful. Some of their other songs that left a great impression on us personally were "Flavor," "Want U Back," and "Cause You're Beautiful" (by subunit 100% V).
Tumblr media
(100% in "Beat" music video. Pic rights: TOP Media, 2014)
Another moment of honesty: 100% are a very talented group. They definitely deserve more time and attention to show off that talent. TOP Media finally gave them their own solo concert in 2013, but TOP Media can still do more to give these particular "TOP brothers" more of the spotlight.
This is a year that has already brought a lot of change to the band. Leader Minwoo has enlisted for his mandatory military service, and maknae Sanghoon has recently stepped away from the idol life. The five active members -- Rokhyun, Changbum, Jonghwan, Hyukjin, and Chanyong -- are now the heart that keeps 100% alive.
Now, yes, now -- we can discuss the music video for "Beat."
Concept: Can We Rebuild Chanyong? Yes, We Can!
Tumblr media
(Chanyong of 100% in "Beat" music video. Pic rights: TOP Media, 2014)
The music video concept is an update of the Mary Shelley book Frankenstein, about a man named Victor Frankenstein who successfully uses the body parts of the deceased to create his own human/monster.
So Chanyong's character must have passed away somehow, and his love interest wants to bring him back to life. Or perhaps she had a vision of the perfect man, decides to utilize build-your-own-boyfriend (home-edition) and creates Channie.
It would have been really easy for the director of the video to make "Beat" gory, but he treads lightly. On the scale of supernatural K-pop music videos, "Beat" is pretty clean and tame. A lot of fans are probably thankful for that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Rokhyun and Hyukjin of 100% in "Beat" music video. Pic rights: TOP Media, 2014)
However, it would have been intriguing if the director/TOP Media had taken a few more risks artistically: perhaps some black-and-white scenes, maybe more dramatic make-up, possibly even include a more emotional aspect to the music video -- like making us feel sorry for the monster (ahem, in the music video, it is a dazzling and gorgeous Chanyong) or its creator (in the m.v., it's an attractive actress) like one of the original themes in Frankenstein.
The main filming set is a mix of both laboratory and crypt. On each sarcophagus ("coffin" seems too heavy of a word to be used here), we see the birthdays of the band members.
Can we just say that the cutaway scenes that either featured 100% dancing while lightning flashes in the background and the shots of them in the white room were beautiful. Maybe a dance version would feature more of those sets.
Tumblr media

Okay, hold up. We all need to take a moment to admire Jonghwan's outfit. You know which one, right? You know.
Tumblr media
(Jonghwan of 100% in "Beat" music video. Pic rights: TOP Media, 2014)
Anyhow, even though the music video isn't something that will give you nightmares, certain aspects are implied. The scenes of the guys running are probably them trying to escape the love interest, who is seeking to basically steal their body parts. The metal braces on their bodies represent what she takes from them.
Given that many of the caskets in the lab/crypt mention that soldiers from WWII are buried there, perhaps the director was aiming at some speculative science-fiction about sexy cyborg soldiers (the members of 100%) whose ultimate demise is a lovelorn woman who only wants them for their bodies, literally.
One of the most memorable scenes -- besides Chanyong's close-up -- is when he awakes to see his band members lying on the ground and he realizes that it took a little bit of Changbum, a little bit of Hyukjin, a little bit of Jonghwan, and a little bit of Rokhyun to bring him (back) to life. He's so disgusted that he rips out his own heart and destroys himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chanyong of 100% in "Beat" music video. Pic rights: TOP Media, 2014)
100% started their "Beat" music show performances before the release of the video. Honestly, even though there's the Frankenstein concept -- the song is bigger than the concept/music video. In the future, we'd love to see 100% with more powerful choreography like they've done in the past, because we all know that they can dance really well.
As for the rest of the album, we had a serious fangirl moment to see a song titled "Bad Girl." It's like, we have "Bad Boy" and now, "Bad Girl" -- perfect. "Bad Girl" (Track 5) is the song you want to sing after you eat an entire half-gallon of ice cream in one sitting, or after spending way too much money on K-pop albums. The song "You and I" (Track 3) was love at first listen.
Tumblr media
(Changbum of 100% in "Beat" music video. Pic rights: TOP Media, 2014)
So why should you support 100%'s comeback with "Beat"? Because it's one of those songs you can sing along to all dramatically, while making equally dramatic hand gestures. Because 100% has potential, and we know that there's still more for them to show us.
The band is currently selling autographed albums, so please go over to Soompi or Mwave to Bang the Bush, and please support 100%!

Let's Talk About Music Videos: Why We Dig B.A.P's "1004 (Angel)"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Bang Yong Guk and Jongup from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
On February 2, 2014, T.S. Entertainment gave us the newest music video from B.A.P for the song "1004(Angel)" -- which was off of the group's first full album (First Sensibility). Admittedly, dearest readers, this review is late, but still relevant. Indeed, the music video has been recently criticized as being "only a music video," and B.A.P described as "only actors in a music video" -- two very casual statements that try to dismiss the symbolism in "1004."
Just because it is "K-Pop" does not mean the music in its genre lacks meaning, or symbolism, or the ability to affect the lives and minds of its fans.
The images and scenes in the m.v. (as well as the lyrics) can stand for the experience of losing anyone -- not just a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Oh, but we're getting ahead of ourselves. Before we discuss the music video, let's say a few words about the album First Sensibility: twelve all new songs (thirteen if you count the intro track) and is definitely one of those albums you won't regret buying, especially if you like a bit of R&B. "Body & Soul" is a personal favorite.
But we're getting wordy here. It's time! We must talk about "1004 (Angel)."
Being a "Badman" Causes the End of a Relationship (Or Is the Music Video About Something Else? Possibly.)
The actual lyrics for "1004 (Angel)" are about a relationship between two people which is so badly damaged that they can never repair it. It is completely over. One person was so good and kind in the relationship that she was like an angel, and the other person feels that he himself was the bad, selfish one in comparison.
The end of their love (or friendship, or bond -- either can apply) is so final that it is as if she's passed away. That's the direction the music video takes.
No one handles the end of a relationship in the same way. Also, no one copes with the death of a loved one exactly the same, either. Let's see how each member of B.A.P reacts in "1004 (Angel)." We'll also look at how they move toward acceptance of what's happened.
Bang Yong Guk --  Fear of Losing the Memory of the Loved One
Tumblr media
(Bang Yong Guk from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
Firstly, do you all remember the "Power" music video? Remember that dusty field that B.A.P danced in? The field was full of equipment, and fire, and all of the members were together exuding toughness.
In "1004," we open with Bang Yong Guk running through a very empty and desolate field. All of the toughness from "Power" has been drained away. He is alone, and due to loss, his emotions are exposed. He doesn't care about being tough, or about being seen as weak -- he is just a normal human being who is trying to deal with how much he is hurting inside.
He probably already feels like a madman. Did you see the camera-shot of the many deep holes he dug just to look for that little castle?
Tumblr media
(Bang Yong Guk from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
If we apply this music video to indicate the death of someone close to him, then Bang Yong Guk is terrified of losing even one memory of the person who has passed. He wants to remember even the smallest things. That isolated field that he's in could represent his mind -- a mind that is quickly losing everything it remembered about that deceased loved one. So he digs and digs, and struggles to remember.
The little castle that he finally finds represents a memory, and he is understandably relieved to find/recall it.
How He Finally Accepts the Loss: He's okay as long as he has his memories.
Daehyun -- Coping with What the Loved One Left Behind
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Daehyun from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
If you've ever lost someone close to you, then you know that there's always a family member who has to sort through the possessions that were left behind. Every item has a bit of the deceased person's memory attached to it, and it can be a very hard task.
Daehyun, in the "1004 (Angel)" music video, is the person who must deal with the belongings/items that have been left by the one who is gone.
How He Finally Accepts the Loss: He sees the hourglass (which represents time, of course), and he sadly watches it -- realizing that every person's life is like an hourglass. His character seems to eventually accept loss as a normal part of life.
Zelo -- Blaming of Self for the Loss
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Zelo from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
In a way, Zelo's part in the music video is one of the saddest, besides Himchan's. Could you imagine how much it would hurt to blame yourself for the death of someone close to you? But if we take the lyrics into account, the actual song is about someone blaming himself for the end of a relationship. In his mind, it is all his fault -- he was careless toward the other person.
He's feeling guilt, even though he unintentionally caused pain (represented by almost hurting the girl on the carousel).
How He Finally Accepts the Loss: Looks like he thinks it over, and eventually, his mind grasps onto happier memories/thoughts. He's even smiling at one point.
Jongup -- Innocent View of Heaven, Death, and Loss
Tumblr media
(Jongup from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
For the video, Jongup's character takes a more innocent view of death. He imagines himself able to actually break into heaven, and see her once more. The wall he's pounding on represents the divide between life and death (or heaven and earth). He's angry because she's been taken from him.
Even when he breaks through -- he reaches for her, but she knows she can't come with him and he knows it, too.
How He Finally Accepts Loss: His anger subsides. His anger and sadness has left him exhausted so he just rests his head against the wall. The feathers could represent how his once angry, grieved heart has softened. He's letting go of his pain.
Youngjae -- Imagining that You See the Loved One Everywhere
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Youngjae from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
Oh, how real Youngjae's actions are in the music video! Have you ever missed someone so much that you imagine that you see him or her everywhere? Then you're heart-broken again when it's not that person.
He keeps seeing the one that he's lost all around him. His mind plays tricks on him, but her reflection seems so real to him -- it's like she's really there. In the mirrors of a fun house, you can't easily tell if what you see is only a reflection or is the real thing.
How He Finally Accepts the Loss: After he punches the mirror, he's left with only the very real pain in his bloody knuckles. He accepts that she actually is gone and can never return.
Himchan -- Happy Memories are now Sad Memories
Tumblr media
(Himchan from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
Kim Himchan really impresses with his acting skills. In fact, the ending is so well-done that sometimes, it makes it hard to watch because we feel it and it feels so realistic.
His character is depressed because those happy memories he had with the one who is gone make him miss her even more. He maybe wonders if he will ever be happy again.
Tumblr media
(Himchan from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
He sees himself in the mirror and what he sees is this terrified, extremely depressed, suicidal version of himself. What he sees is how he's feeling on the inside -- his reflection represents his depression.
How He Finally Accepts Loss: He shoots the mirror, and I believe that actually indicates that he's against his own suicide. He's decided to fight against his own depression. Maybe he did originally consider taking his own life as a way to cope, but ultimately, he fires at the mirror, not at himself.
This music video was heart-breaking and beautiful. The tears shed are not about gender/sex, but about human beings having a difficult time coping with loss. We can all identify with that.
Tumblr media
(Jongup from B.A.P Music Video "1004 (Angel)." Pic Rights: T.S. Entertainment, 2014)
B.A.P: From "Warrior" to "1004 (Angel)"
Over and over again, B.A.P gets criticized for supposedly leaving behind their hardcore ways. Some fans and critics don't like seeing a softer side of the band, preferring videos with more "bad-ass" tough-guy acting.
But if they had stuck to the "I'm a bad boy" image, would people have been saying then that's the only concept B.A.P can do? Honestly, if a band maintained the same concept year after year, people would get the false impression that their talent is limited to one concept only.
B.A.P is too original for that. They are too talented to be stuck in a music concept black-hole. Can't we agree that making good music while encouraging their fans to positively change the world is their concept (and way of life)?
Congratulations to B.A.P for their first music show awards for "1004 (Angel)" and for their upcoming LOE 2014! Please continue to support them and be sure to check out First Sensibility if you haven't done so already!

Do you knowabout comebacks for this year? Every list is somewhat inaccurate. 100% and LC9. It's been said 100% came back last month but I haven't seen anything and I can't find anything about LC9 who is "coming back" this month. So confused?
Oh, those comeback lists…yeah, they can be a bit inaccurate or really, they go based on whatever info we have at the moment. Like we thought Boyfriend was supposed to have a Korean comeback in Feb./March, but it turns out, it will be another Japanese comeback (and then I go cry in a corner, lol…)(Well, their Japanese songs are actually really good, but I want to see them on the music shows, etc.)
I’m rambling.
Anyhow, LC9 said at a fanmeet at the end of last year (the Singapore concerts with Lunafly) that they were aiming for a comeback sometime before March *sigh*. I am so ready for LC9 to return, because we know how talented they are and they’ve only released one music video so far. So for LC9 = they hope for a comeback before March 2014.
Before LC9 debuted, they were supposed to add three more members. It will be interesting to see if Nega Network decides to go ahead with that.
As for 100% — in December, they held their first solo concert and I read that they performed a new song, which they would use for their 2014 comeback. Not sure if they are going to have a comeback soon (like try to hurry before Minwoo leaves for the army this year?) or if they are going to wait. So for 100% = they have a new song ready, but I haven’t seen any dates for a comeback.
Of course, I’ll probably publish this answer — and then, boom! Teasers for LC9, 100%, and Boyfriend (lol, I wish). Thank you for writing in and asking, I hope that I kind of, sort of, helped :)

Let's Talk About Videos: Topp Dogg Gets Klassy in "Cigarette"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Entertainment, 2013)
Let's talk about the best camera shots and moments from Topp Dogg's newest music video for "Cigarette."
On December 11, 2013, Stardom Entertainment sparked the newest music video by their rookie group Topp Dogg -- for the song "Cigarette." The tune will be on the group's first repackaged album, which will be released December 13th and in addition to "Cigarette," Dogg's Out Repackaged Album will include the Chinese version of "Say It/Follow Me."
According to many Topp Dogg fansites, "Cigarette" was written by member Gohn, along with singer/song-writer Deez. The song was first performed on stage at Topp Dogg's predebut showcase by vocalists Gohn, Nakta, Seogoong and rappers Yano and Jenissi.
Topp Dogg is having a big December: releasing their first repackaged album, they'll soon be part of Show Kpop, and they just announced the official name of their fanclub (Topp Klass).
When it comes to Topp Dogg, we have to admit one thing before we talk about the music video for "Cigarette": for such a big group, their fashion and style has been pretty much perfect so far. Their clothes are perfectly holiday-preppy in "Cigarette" with some vintage and British schoolboy flair.
...Okay, okay, okay, hold on. Forget fashion for a moment, because we know what's on the minds of many Topp Klass: where is the maknae line of Topp Dogg, A-tom and Yano in the "Cigarette" music video? Although we only know unconfirmed reasons why they don't appear, we're almost positive that Yano still raps first in the music video (even though he doesn't appear).
We'd like to imagine that A-tom is in the part of the kitchen that isn't on camera -- eating lemons and laughing to himself, while Yano is up that spiral staircase -- taking selcas on expert-mode (well, Yano-mode).
Now, there are three kinds of Topp Klass (fans of Topp Dogg): 1) Those fans who are still learning their names/faces, 2) Those fans who can recognize and name each member, and 3) Fans who know members' stage names, real names, former names, which "house" each member belongs to, bromances, titles to all of the mixtape songs, and predebut stories.
Topp Dogg and the Finer Things in Life [The Vocal Line and the Set]
It's quite obvious that this music video was filmed in a mansion in Downton Abbey and decorated by a interior designer who loves Pier 1 and The Great Gatsby. The house obviously only has five rooms/spaces: kitchen, hallway straight out of a museum, dark attic (?) with only one light and solely used for solo dancing moments, vintage living room full of business books and no computers, and one bedroom.
With eleven guys present, and the beauty of the filming location, we have to be truthful and say that the love interest kind of gets lost in the scenery -- though that doesn't hurt or help the music video.
Tumblr media
(Gohn of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Mainly because the vocals in this song are pro and that's what matters. Let us start off by stating that Gohn's voice is golden. He's like the star of one of those Hollywood movies where there's a new tough-looking, leather-pants-wearing guy singing in the choir who happens to have the voice of an angel and blows everyone away.
Nakta and his scene in the hallway with the girl was a bit awkward, but that just adds to our good opinion of his seemingly shy personality. He brings the loveable and adorkable aspect to Topp Dogg, and how can you not melt over his line in this song: "I want to be a perfect boyfriend." Awkwardness and all, we believe he's actually willing to try to be that perfect guy.
Tumblr media
(Nakta of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Tumblr media
(P-Goon of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Tumblr media
(Seogoong of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Tumblr media
(Actress and Sangdo of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
We're totally impressed by the high notes that Gohn, Seogoong, and P-Goon deliver in this song. We also feel that there's something to Sangdo -- like we feel there's more talent in him than he's been able to show so far. You just feel that there's something there, like we haven't even seen the total fullness of his talent yet. In fact, all members hint that they have so much more to show us.
Three of the Best Camera Shots from "Cigarette"
We'll always be fond of their first music video for "Say It" because it introduced us to Topp Dogg, but overall (camera shots, song, smoothness) -- the "Cigarette" music video really starts to show Topp Dogg's ability more than "Say It" did. Here are some of our favorite moments in the music video:
Tumblr media
(Jenissi of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Jenissi's Face.  He's got it: Jenissi has that feel that rappers need. That attitude when he raps. The camera catches his classic facial expressions when he's rapping in the kitchen, and we thank the film crew for that. Just admire the way he looks into the camera. Jenissi is definitely a character -- a rapper with a big personality.
Tumblr media
(Kidoh of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Kidoh, the rapping museum curator. There is something very stand-out about that shot of Kidoh rapping in the hallway with the old paintings around him. He's dressed like a teaching assistant or museum curator with this old-school, vintage clothing style but he's rapping. You already know he has loads of talent, right?
Hojoon Potter. Dancer. Don't tell us that someone at Stardom Entertainment isn't a fan of the Harry Potter books. Come on, Hojoon has a Harry Potter style at the moment and he's in the Wizard house (Topp Dogg is divided into "houses"). But the incredible thing is, Hojoon (along with Xero, Hansol, and B-Joo) brings some great dancing to the music video. A lot of people wouldn't expect, based on appearances, that he could shut a club down with his good dance skills -- but him and the dance line could.
Tumblr media
(Hojoon of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Tumblr media
(Hansol of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Tumblr media
(B-Joo of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Tumblr media
(Xero of Topp Dogg in "Cigarette" music video. Pic rights: Stardom Ent.)
Though it's small, it's a nice touch: near the end of "Cigarette," one of the rappers (quite possibly Yano -- though, again, he doesn't appear in this m.v.) coughs a bit before saying the last lines of the song. [UPDATE: Some sources say the last lines are rapped by A-tom.]
Topp Dogg: Great Beginning for these 2013 Rookies
No one should underestimate Topp Dogg. Their funny team interactions and different personalities will keep us intrigued. One of their strong points (and classic of Stardom) is that for the most part, even though they are rookies and could worry about their image, they aren't keeping themselves and aspects of themselves hidden: they are ready to show us who they are -- awkwardness, weirdness, and craziness included.
Please support Topp Dogg with their comeback for "Cigarette" and if you're a new fan, welcome to Topp Klass!

Let's Talk About Videos: VIXX Meets a Very Special Girl in "Voodoo Doll"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(VIXX in "Voodoo Doll." Pic rights: Jellyfish Entertainment, 2013)
The return of saying "Ravi" and the world heaves a sigh of relief, vibrant meaningful choreography, and awesome stop-motion animation -- VIXX continues to set the standard for dark concepts in K-Pop.
On November 19, 2013, the true masters of K-Pop horror -- Jellyfish Entertainment -- posted the music video for the newest song from VIXX called "Voodoo Doll." The upcoming Voodoo album is the first full album for VIXX, and it contains fifteen tracks, including previous songs like "On and On," "Super Hero," "Hyde," "Only U," and "Rock Ur Body" plus many new songs we haven't heard yet.
The album is available for preorder now and will officially be released on November 25th. The busy gentlemen of VIXX just completed their first world showcase Milky Way tour at a sold-out stadium in Seoul.
Now that we've discussed some basic background info, are you ready to chat about this "Voodoo Doll" music video? Okay, prepare yourself, take a few breaths, and get comfortable -- we're about to go deep because this video is full of details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(N of VIXX in "Voodoo Doll." Pic rights: Jellyfish Ent.)
VIXX and the Art of Music Video Storytelling
As many of you know, the song for "Hyde" was connected to the song "You're Impressive (G.R.8.U)." Those songs and videos told a story of love gone bad.
In the same way, we'd like to say that the lyrics for "Voodoo Doll" describe the aftermath of lyrics for "On and On."
First, let's look at some important lines from "On and On" -- with English translations provided by kpoplyrics.net.
"She pokes at me and then runs away Can’t let go. She does it on and on and on She calls me and then turns away They say she’s dangerous but I can’t hear them." -- from the song "On and On"
and even further, there are these lyrics:
"I’m a toy that’s made for you, my life line is always in danger... Just play with me for sure today... Roughly play with me, then throw me away – I’m all done getting ready to get hurt." -- from the song "On and On"
May we repeat once more that those are lyrics from "On and On" -- yet the words properly describe the events in the music video for "Voodoo Doll." Also, like fans have pointed out, "Voodoo Doll" repeats the line "ready to get hurt."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Leo of VIXX in "Voodoo Doll." Pic rights: Jellyfish Ent.)
In addition, at least one part of the choreography for "On and On" is redone in the dance for "Voodoo Doll." Remember that moment near the beginning of the "On and On" live performances when Hongbin jabs his arm up past Leo like his arm is a sword, and Leo pushes it out?
For the choreo in "Voodoo Doll," N and Ken repeat this move -- but they don't force the needle back out again. However, toward the end of the video, it is Leo who is the one that removes the needle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ken of VIXX in "Voodoo Doll." Pic rights: Jellyfish Ent.)
Two last things to say about the dance for "Voodoo Doll" (corny joke included): 1) The throwing movement involving Ken has been compared to Shinee's throw in "Everybody." The nature of the two dance moves is completely different: the one in "Everybody" is meant to "wake up" or stir Taemin into action and symbolizes being brought to life/revived; the throw in "Voodoo Doll" is about restraint, loss of control over your own limbs and actions -- the dance move could even be reminiscent of the medieval torture device called the Rack which painfully stretched a person's limbs outward.
Secondly, the VIXX guys dance with an oversized needle, so this is literally a point dance (status of corny joke: complete).
So What Exactly is Going On in the "Voodoo Doll" Music Video
Do you know who is probably the most shocked about finding out this chick secretly chooses torture as a hobby (because crocheting was officially not hardcore enough for her)?
That's right: Dongwoo and Hoya of Infinite H. If you recall, this is the same lady from the "Special Girl" music video. Who knew that just beyond that blue door, she would soon hold VIXX captive?
Tumblr media
(From Infinite H's "Special Girl" music video. Pic rights: Woollim Ent.)
In "Voodoo Doll," she is obsessed with biological science (as shown by the writing and drawings on Ravi's glass holding cell), perhaps because she seeks to learn how best to control living beings by studying them. In one scene, we see what could be the word "mecha" written on Ravi's cell, and "mecha" can refer to a robot or machine controlled by people. Ultimately, she resorts to misusing voodoo dolls to get that control over other people that she desires.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ravi of VIXX in "Voodoo Doll." Pic rights: Jellyfish Ent.)
Most of the VIXX members seem to be experiencing some Stockholm Syndrome at the beginning and middle of the music video, meaning they still love or desire the one who is badly hurting them (and how interesting is it that the "Only U" video was filmed in Stockholm, Sweden).
When the heart of the voodoo doll lights up, it could symbolize them coming to their senses and finally getting the strength to let go, to move on, to get away from this bad relationship.
So in the song lyrics for "On and On," the pain that comes with this particular toxic relationship is welcomed. In "Voodoo Doll," love has blinded them, and they are willing to lose everything for the loved one. Ultimately, voodoo in this video is supposed to show how love can be this force that can control you, a force that leaves you powerless.
By the time they realize this kind of love isn't good for them by the end of the video and song, almost all of them escape -- except Hongbin.
He eventually accepts the fact that he is stuck. He doesn't even try to escape anymore -- to the point where the captor doesn't have to lock him in a cell. The X in his eyes could symbolize stitch marks that keep a deceased person's eyes closed tightly. He ends up losing himself to the one he thought he loved, and he is dead inside by the end of the music video -- which is shown one final time (and throughout the video) via the X marks on his pupils.
And thus, VIXX has added a chapter to their story about how romantic love can sometimes become rotten and destructive.
There are several aspects of the "Voodoo Doll" music video that are impressive, but we'll only mention a couple of those aspects now. Even before you look up the English lyrics, you can feel the sadness that underscores this song. You feel this song deep down inside of you, even before you know what the words mean. Secondly, the choreography is very well-planned and expressive.

One thing we know for sure from the "On and On" and "Voodoo Doll" videos: ladies love touching handsome Hongbin's face and head. Seriously, forget the Leappad tablet or the newest IPhone -- go for Mr. Lee Hongbin "Bean".
If you're like us, the "Voodoo Doll" music video gets you into the holiday mood (what? you don't feel that way? oh...). May we recommend a stylishly-torn sweater like the ones VIXX wore in this music video as a present for that someone special? Go to any clothing store, and scoot on over to the K-pop bondage-chic department. Just make sure they gift-wrap.

VIXX is trying to win their first award, and we were up by a strong lead, but now, we’re losing that lead.
I must appeal to Starlights, supporters of VIXX, and please A+ (MBLAQ fans because MBLAQ taught and mentored VIXX when they were rookies; also, because A+ helps us so much):

EDIT: This has been put on hold. I need to catch up on quite a bit of K-pop updates and news.
A Little Later
Hello to everyone! Hello to new followers! A little bit later, I will answer the question in the inbox about Topp Dogg on this blog [Your Moment of K-Pop] and I plan on writing a post about MR.MR’s new music video over at my other more serious blog — americanokpop.tumblr.com.
But let just say briefly that MR.MR’s new song and video are pure magic.

Let's Talk About Videos: Troublemaker Returns with the Very Sexy (and Highly Flammable) Video for "Now"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TroubleMaker's HyunA and Hyunseung in "Now" music video. Pic rights: Cube Entertainment, 2013)
On October 27, 2013, Cube Entertainment gave us a brand-new music video from the subunit of TroubleMaker (HyunA of 4Minute and Hyunseung of Beast) for the new song "There is No Tomorrow (Now)." The song is off their second mini album called "Chemistry." The album will be released on Oct. 31, and later on, an adult-rated version of the album will come out.
The subunit was formed in 2011, and the song as well as the dance for their first music video called "Trouble Maker" gained a lot of love (and thus, was parodied quite often) in the K-Pop world.
Before we talk about the good (and there's a lot of it) -- let's get the not-so-pleasant bad out in the open: there are critics and fans already judging TroubleMaker negatively. Of course, when we say "judging TroubleMaker" -- we mean judging HyunA.
The teaser photos featuring risque poses, bras, and panties stirred some people up and it's quite unfortunate that HyunA is criticized as being scandalous when she is only promoting the image created by Cube Entertainment. Even more unfortunate is that this isn't the first time she's had to endure this kind of criticism (and she definitely isn't the only singer in a girl group that has had to experience it -- for example, there's the negative reaction Girl's Day received for the "Female President" music video).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TroubleMaker in the "Now" mv. Pic Rights: Cube Ent.)
There is an upside to this, however: even with the hell they could catch from critics and fans, Hyunseung and HyunA's subunit is called TroubleMaker -- and they are here with "There Is No Tomorrow (Now)" -- ready to intentionally, well, cause some trouble in the K-Pop music universe.
Now that we've traveled down the serious-social-politics lane, let's cruise and have some fun talking about this music video.
If you read the English translation of the lyrics and take a while to decipher them, you'll see that the song is about one of those possibly toxic or just rocky relationships where two people can't decide whether to stay together or not, can't figure out whether they love each other or hate each other -- and whether to walk away or stay. This song demands that they make a decision now -- don't wait until tomorrow to decide, just act like there is no tomorrow.
So HyunA and Hyunseung play a couple and we guess it's a toxic relationship (they did try to shoot each other and/or set each other on fire in the the "Trouble Maker" music video, so we'd say their relationship is at least a bit unhealthy). They are possibly incompatible -- he's a Heineken guy, she's a Budweiser gal. Perhaps they had an argument, so she goes out to the club; he uses his hundred dollar bills to entertain several "ladies of the evening" back at his trailer (the ladies leave without payment, though...Hyunseung, you smooth operator, you.)
The duo are supposed to represent a couple of broken individuals who indulge in self-destructive stimulants -- beer, cigarettes, Nature's Valley Crunchy Granola Bars. They both live life too fast without worrying about the consequences, and their personalities are symbolized by the speeding race cars.
Ultimately, they realize that they are both on the same level of crazy -- and that they are meant to be together. Other than the Dark Knight moment, when they look in the mirror, they see each other -- because they are so much alike. They both enjoy the same things: making love in cars in fields, fireworks, and they apparently share a strong dislike of the TroubleMaker posters -- which they douse with alcohol and set on fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TroubleMaker in the "Now" mv. Pic rights: Cube Ent.)
Speaking of fireworks, HyunA and Hyunseung cause sparks with all of the kissing that goes on in this music video. They have chemistry, just like the title of their mini album.
So what do we think of the music video for "There is No Tomorrow (Now)" by TroubleMaker? It's risky, beautiful, steamy, colorful, and the duo take chances that most idols aren't willing or able to take. The video is memorable, and the song is decent (although HyunA and Hyunseung's true singing talent is better showcased in the other songs on the album).
In sum, we share in the excitement that TroubleMaker is back together again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TroubleMaker in the "Now" mv. Pic rights: Cube Ent.)
But some questions still remain. Since when did Aztec fleece blankets become so sexy? Is anything more dangerous than using the trunk of your love-nest-on-wheels as a bed, dancing between race cars, or lighting fireworks in close proximity to your trailer? Will Hyunseung place all of those hundreds in an appropriate savings account? And after sleeping with the fridge door open, what in the world will HyunA do with all of that warm beer?
Please support our favorite coed trouble-making duo TroubleMaker and their comeback for "There is No Tomorrow (Now)" :)

Let's Talk About Videos: Block B Makes Visiting the Bank Fun Again (Was It Ever?) in "Very Good"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Block B in the "Very Good" music video. Pic rights: Seven Seasons, 2013)
Jaehyo's very special dancing while wearing the clown mask, B-Bomb's corset, Zico in crushed red velvet, Block B robbing a bank without actually taking any money at the end, and fans having the urge to choose a serving of Kyung instead of a bottle of V8 veggie juice -- Blocktober has begun.
On October 1, 2013, the entertainment company Seven Seasons posted Block B's second new music video -- "Very Good."
The song is on their third mini-album of the same name (this is the fourth mini-album if you count the Welcome to the Block repackaged album), which contains three other songs including "Be the Light" plus an instrumental track.
So now that we have the basic information out of the way, let's jump right in and talk about the song and music video for "Very Good" -- because many people are trying to understand it.
First off, for all of you fans who love details -- certain subtle aspects of the "Very Good" music video refer back to previous Block B music videos, especially "Narina/Nalina" -- a song that leader Zico wrote himself.
The coat that Zico is wearing in "Very Good" is a lot like the coats the band wore in "Nalina" for the gorilla dance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Zico of Block B in "Very Good." Pic rights: Seven Seasons)
In "Nalina," Taeil plays with Zico's leg like it's a guitar; in "Very Good," P.O playfully pretends Zico's leg is a shotgun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First Pic: Block B in "Nalina." Second and Third Pics: Block B in "Very Good" -- pic rights: Seven Seasons)
In "Nalina," the time when the two rival gangs are supposed to fight is written on the wall as 7:30. In "Very Good," the numbers 7,3, and 0 are floor and wall tiles during Kyung's table scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First Pic: From Block B's "Nalina." Second Pic: Block B's "Very Good" -- pic rights: Seven Seasons)
As other fans have pointed out, Taeil seems to still have his love of candy and lollipops in "Very Good" like he did in "Nillili Mambo."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First Pic: From "Nillili Mambo." Second Pic: Block B in "Very Good" -- pic rights: Seven Seasons)
Then of course, Park Kyung's famous shoulder dance from that very popular teaser is back and here to stay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First Pic: Block B teaser. Second Pic: Block B's "Very Good" -- pic rights: Seven Seasons)
So why notice these tiny details? Some fans are pointing out how the music video for "Very Good" has certain scenes and costumes that remind them of music videos from other K-Pop music labels.
Block B and the music video director are aware of this -- and any details that seem similar to other artists are probably deliberate and intentional. In a sense, as shown by the lyric "We’re pros when it comes to concepts like this" from "Very Good" -- Block B is showing that the weird, strange, or swag music video concept isn't owned by any one group or label. In fact, Block B wants to show with the "Very Good" music video that they can do the same odd or original concepts successfully.
Hence we get a music video that is chock full of multiple concepts. Indeed, with "Very Good" we see that originality isn't reserved for only one member of the band -- all seven members are allowed to stand-out and have their own flavor.
Block B is proving and saying that they can take any concept and make it work for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Park Kyung of Block B in "Very Good." Pic rights: Seven Seasons)
So yes, the video for "Very Good" is a parody at times of K-pop music videos that market strange and hard-to-understand images/costumes that equate weird with better.
Don't worry, though -- Block B members are willing to make fun of themselves, too. Park Kyung, who holds the nicknames of Cucumber and Carrot, is shown with his head on a platter with other vegetables.
If you've listened to enough K-Pop songs, then you've already heard quite a few that are "Our band is the best in the music industry" songs or songs that bring up the "real rapper versus fake rapper" issue that's hot in K-Pop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Maknae P.O, Jaehyo, and B-Bomb of Block B in "Very Good." Pic rights: Seven Seasons)
"Very Good" has lyrics that do both of those things. For instance, Zico powerfully calls out and asks how many fake MCs (rappers) are out there [in the music world]. "Very Good" is sung and rapped with much more confidence, force, and conviction than a lot of those other "we're the best, forget the rest" songs.
This song mixes rock-and-roll with rap, and it works really well. P.O and U-kwon as some kind of Sex Pistols-esque band was definitely something we haven't seen yet in a Block B video. In fact, most of the events in "Very Good" are things we haven't seen in their videos.
B-Bomb has some powerful vocals to start the song (and throughout), and Jaehyo promised on his Twitter that fans would see more of him in "Very Good" -- and he definitely had memorable scenes with the eventually barely-dressed bank customer who knocks him out. Taeil gave a great performance as a Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter-like character and villain, plus U-Kwon finally escapes trouble without getting roughed-up, punched, or bitten.
Also, we learned in this video that Block B really, really hates overdraft loans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(U-Kwon and Taeil of Block B in "Very Good." Pic rights: Seven Seasons)
But the best part about the "Very Good" music video: this is only the beginning of Block B's resumed quest to impact the music scene in 2013. If they accomplish what they did in "Be the Light" and "Very Good," then there's no limit to what they can do in the months to come.
As P.O. said at the end of "Nillili Mambo" -- "We going to the top forever -- we going take it to the next level."
Please support the "Kings of the Jungle" Block B during their comeback stages for "Be the Light" and "Very Good" -- and bees (BBCs) keep buzzing!

Let's Talk About Videos: Block B Stays Strong in "Be the Light"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Ukwon of Block B. First Pic: From "Nillili Mambo" music video. Second Pic: "Be the Light" music video. Pic rights: Seven Seasons)
On September 22, 2013, the band Block B returned to the music scene with the pre-release of their new song and music video for "Be the Light."
The song will be on their third mini-album called Very Good (this is the fourth mini-album if you count the Welcome to the Block repackaged album), which will contain three other songs plus an instrumental track.
Now, in this article, we aren't here to discuss the details of the past. We are here to talk about the return of a group that has risen back up after some very unfortunate events.
We want to share your excitement about the "Be the Light" music video. The guys have been gone a while and we didn't know when (or if) they would have the energy and desire to return -- but with their new entertainment company Seven Seasons (@7seasons2013), we're already seeing that they are returning as an even better Block B.
Not much information is available about Seven Seasons yet; however, we get the strong impression that Block B members have more control over their careers with this company. Seven Seasons is so focused on and dedicated to BBCs (fans of Block B) that it's almost like Block B is running the company themselves -- which wouldn't be a bad thing.
Now, let's talk about "Be the Light," okay?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Block B in "Be the Light" music video. Pic rights: 7Seasons, 2013)
In "Nillili Mambo" and in "Be the Light," U-kwon plays the hero: in the first music video, he defends his band mates (or "fellow pirates") from getting hurt; in the second music video, he's protecting a girl. Neither of these times end well...or do they?
But we're talking about the end too early. Let's start off by saying that Zico going all vocal on us and singing at the beginning was just a hint at how all of the members' voices have become more polished. P.O's voice is smoother than ever, and even though we loved all of their singing voices in "Be the Light," Taeil was really allowed to do his thing in this song. He can bring tears to your eyes.
This song would be incredible as an acoustic track -- of course, with Zico playing the guitar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(First Pic: Taeil of Block B. Second Pic: Kyung and Jaehyo of Block B in "Be the Light." Pic rights: 7Seasons, 2013)
K-Pop bands often film at least one music video where the band is involved in some kind of fight or where a member gets roughed-up. Usually, band mates are fighting over a girl, but in "Be the Light" -- U-kwon seems to be defending or protecting the girl.
Also, in music videos that do include fighting, band members will typically defeat the bad guys with suspiciously expert high-kicks and well-timed punches. Indeed, U-kwon could have fought in "Be the Light" -- but he doesn't. He doesn't play that role of a "superman" who is untouchable, macho, or even one that is so unstoppable that he never gets hit.
No, U-kwon goes by himself and faces the trouble. It seemed like he had planned to fight to defend the girl in the music video -- which is a bit sad, because she doesn't seem to think or worry about him much except for that fleeting second when she's in the bathtub. Though it's not completely clear, it really seems like the girl betrayed or set U-kwon up in some way.
Tumblr media
(Block B's "Be the Light" music video. Pic rights: 7Seasons)
Remember the appearance of the chinook (military helicopter)? Chinooks are often used to deliver soldiers or to rescue people from disaster in times of emergency. Perhaps the chinook is supposed to symbolize the arrival of help in the form of the other Block B members. The girl in the music video seemed surprised to see the chinook -- maybe because she thought no one would come to help U-kwon.
This is something I must go through -- it'll be hard, but I have to face it. There will be times when I'll have to face this alone. Just encourage me while I go through it -- that seems to be the message of the music video. U-kwon's character is constantly thinking of the girl when the pain is the worst and the thought of her helps him to bear it. Even though he sees now that she's no good for him, he still clings to the memory of her because he feels like that's all he has to keep him going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Zico and Kyung of Block B in "Be the Light." Pic rights: 7Seasons, 2013)
But then, the rest of Block B shows up, and shows him that he isn't alone. That someone will always be there to pick him up again after he goes through a horrible experience. For BBCs, this is Block B showing that their band is still united and have not been broken by what they've gone through.
Of course, "Be the Light" would end on a cliffhanger. The van with the Berlin license plate, the clown masks reminiscent of Batman The Dark Knight movie -- we can not only sense a follow-up music video soon, but also, that Block B's about to wreak havoc, go rob and/or burn something down. Notice that the band member getting picked up by the van is wearing the same hooded leather coat that Kyung and Zico are wearing during the bathroom rapping scene in "Be the Light."
But being the Block B that we all know and love, in their next video, there will probably be some funny moments mixed in the chaos.
Please support the return of Block B with their much-anticipated new album Very Good when it comes out!
