Hey! I've been seeing a lot of BA stuff on tumblr and I wanted to get into it, but I don't really know where to start. I always thought it was a reality show on Netflix or something, but it's just on youtube, right? They have more than 1000 videos uploaded, any advice on where to start? Is there any kind of order to them or should I just pick whatever I like? I'd appreciate the help :)

This is going to be kind of a really long answer, and I’m by no means an authority on this, these are just my thoughts

If anyone else has any feel free to reply or reblog with that of course, or if you have a favorite episode I’d love some of that heat and I’m sure any newcomers would appreciate it

TLDR: All BA episodes are available on YouTube. There are no rules and you should absolutely pick what you like, but if you’re the kind of person who likes guidance, here’s a lot of guidance

Those are the big ones as of right now, or at least the ones I envision continuing for the foreseeable future. There are some minor ones that will pop up again eventually of course (It’s Alive: Goin’ Places, a spinoff, and if you’re a Claire fan there’s one season so far of Baking School which is really informative) but we are in quarantine so production is on hold (there’s quarantine-specific content too)

I think what you’ve gotta decide also is if you’re a person who finds more pleasure in viewing things in chronological order, or if you find more pleasure in seeing things out of sequence and gradually recognizing recurring jokes and connecting them to their origins (I’m the second because I’m the kind of person that could get really into Homestuck but that’s not necessarily better, different strokes)

So if you like chronological order there’s kind of two veins you can go: start in a certain time period and work through multiple chefs and series or start in a series you like and go through that

Regarding that first method, I got really into it like the spring of 2019, and what I liked about that stage is that you had these three pretty well-established recurring series (Gourmet Makes with Claire, It’s Alive with Brad, and Back-to-Back Chef with Carla), but it was also when they started to branch out with more series for the test kitchen crew who didn’t have a series yet so you got to see everything grow

And regarding the second one, I think it’s just human nature to pick favorites. So if you dipped into some of the Test Kitchen Talks or Making Perfect and you find a chef that resonates with your own brand of humor, why not dip into their series? Or, each chef also has a spotlight playlist on the BA Youtube channel

It’s hard to weigh like “which series is best” because that’s so subjective, but there are big differences between a series being informative and a series being comedic. Like, if you’re into the food science and the actual cooking, Andy Explores or From the Test Kitchen are going to be more geared toward that than Gourmet Makes, or It’s Alive, or Reverse Engineering. No matter where you go though, you’re almost always going to see multiple test kitchen members add their own flavor to whatever video, and it’s pretty much always going to be funny because that’s the blessing of their shift to personality-based content

That’s kind of long-winded but like you said, they have a thousand videos uploaded so there’s about a thousand things to consider if you haven’t dipped into it before. And I have a tendency to be long-winded anyway :’)
