‘Why your freelance Business needs an LLC?’. Well, that might look kinda wired and odd question. Yet, one of the few right questions you should ask yourself if you are already a freelancer. I’m not an expert on forming business entities and the laws behind such processes. But, I know how to answer the burning question ‘Why your freelance Business needs an LLC and how to have one.’
If you think of taking your freelance business to the next level, then you should definitely be thinking of forming a Limited Liable Company (AKA LLC).
No matter where you are located, it really matters to have an organized business. And having a registered business entity will surely help you to gain and enjoy the exclusive benefits provided by banks. This guide on why your freelance Business needs an LLC, in a way, will be beneficial if you are not a US resident.
I’m located in Sri Lanka, and the majority of my clients are from the US. And I started my freelancing career back in 2010, on Upwork (Formerly oDesk). When I’m gradually going forward with my freelance projects on Upwork, I decided to have my own freelance agency. This is where I really needed an LLC.

What is an LLC?
You could find several definitions for this. Yet, this is what I understood.
A Limited liability Company or an LLC is simply a business structure. Either an Individual or several members can manage or own an LLC. The most important thing about LLC is, owners are not responsible for any liabilities or debts that the company has. If someone sues your LLC, the law can only deal with your LLC no with your personal assets.
In a way, which is super handy if you run a business in the US and need to keep your personal assets safe from any business-related issues.
Again, I’m telling you, I’m not an expert in this particular matter. What I’m sharing is what I learned and the things I saw benefits for me and my Business.
Benefits of having an LLC as a freelancer
Well, if you check on the internet for this particular topic, you will find hundreds, if not thousands, of benefits of having an LLC.
Especially as a non-US resident with an LLC registered in the US. But here I’m going to tell you the benefits I got as a freelancer.
I got an EIN
EIN stands for Employee Identification Number, which is pretty much similar to SSN (Social Security Number). If you have ever tried to set up a PayPal, a Payoneer, or Transferwise account as a US freelancer, you probably have met the word SSN. SSN is a 9 digit number issued to all permanent and temporary (People who work there) US residents. If you are not a US resident or not working in the US, you may not get an SSN. But, if you form an LLC, then IRS (Internal Revenue Service) will issue your LLC an EIN.
With EIN, you can simply access almost all the facilities that are accessible to anyone with an SSN.
I can have a US bank account, even if I’m not a US citizen
Yes, you heard it right. When you have formed an LLC (A legal business entity in the US), your Business will be treated as a registered business in the US. This being said, you can apply for your US bank account. Keep in mind, we talk about a real US bank account from an actual US bank. Not a virtual bank account. When you are extensively working with clients from the US, having a US bank account is priceless.
But there’s a catch!
If you are a non-US resident and have an EIN, you should visit a US bank to open a US bank account. After the 9/11 attack, this requirement has been enacted. This is to physically verify the person who is opening the bank account. Even though almost all the leading banks process all the documents required to open a US bank account, they all need you to visit a branch personally to finalize the process. If you visit the US for your business needs, then you can easily set up your bank account. All you need is an LLC.
Benefits of having a US bank account as a freelancer
You can accept direct payments from your US clients.
I know for a fact the client love when we offer them such flexibility when they need to pay for our services. There’s no middle-man when your client pay. That means you will receive every penny the client has sent you.
Zero fees (Or the Lowest fees)
Yes, when you offer your clients a means of paying you via ACH (Automated Clearing House), almost all the banks have ZERO fees for ACH payments. That will take the burden of paying extra processing fees. No matter how big or how small the transaction is, the fees will be the lowest. It is one of the key factors that helped me to sustain my client retention.
Higher Interests and Tax-free interests
If you are working with multiple cooperate clients, then it is sure that you shall have a steady and handsome monthly paycheck. When you receive money to your US bank account, that money is eligible to earn interest, and the interest is free from taxes.
Unrestricted PayPal account
PayPal doesn’t operate in all the countries, and in Sri Lanka, the situation is the same. We can make payments via PayPal. But, still, we can not accept payments via PayPal.
PayPal is one of the widely discussed topics in Sri Lankan ‘online’ entrepreneurs. Still, Sri Lankan PayPal accounts are restricted to accept funds.
Unrestricted Stripe account
If you are selling online, then credit card processing is one of the biggest hurdles you should pass to sustain your online business. Like PayPal, Stripe doesn’t operate in certain countries. That includes Sri Lanka. If you are from such a country, where Stripe doesn’t provide their services, you need an LLC and a US bank account. Then it is super easy to have a fully operational Stripe account for all your payment processing needs.
I’ve never been to the US, then what?
With a US bank account and LLC, you can have a brand new PayPal account, which supports accepting funds. Having an unrestricted PayPal is having gold at your disposal when you are dealing with US clients.
I have an LLC, and I never visit the US. So, how come I’m going to have a US bank account?
Yup, I heard you and trust me, you got two of us!
I have never been to the US either. But, that doesn’t mean I can not have a US bank account. Maybe it is not a ‘Real US bank account.’ But, with an EIN, you can apply for a Transferwise business account, Which I use.
With a Transferwise business account, you will be able to have a virtual US bank account. And that can be used to accept funds from your clients. I personally use my Transferwise business account to withdraw funds from Upwork.
Let me breakdown the numbers for you
Before Transferwise, I withdrew the Upwork fund as ‘Wire Transfers,’ and single wire transaction cost me $30.
But with Transferwise, it cost me $0.
Yes, Upwork funds are stored in US bank accounts (Most probably). When I have a virtual US bank account that accepts ACH payments, it is entirely free to withdraw funds from Upwork.
See, my LLC is saving me $360 from Upwork alone, per year!
That’s Upwork alone and not to mention all the benefits and savings that can be unlocked with a US ‘virtual Bank account.’
How to form an LLC in the US
Okay, then, let me walk you through the process, which I did to form my LLC in the US.
Here’s what you should keep in mind before setting up your LLC.
I’m not selling any products on the US market nor have any real businesses there.
That being said, the sole purpose of having an LLC in the US is to obtain my EIN and then have a US bank account.
But, if you have plans on opening a business in the US, then you should talk to your Registered agent first and should make sure all the legal prerequisites are in place before forming the LLC.
Things you need to register an LLC
As I understood, registering an LLC is super easy. Before registering an LLC, you should make sure to have followed in place.
A Registered agent
The registered agent, in a way, a middle-man. When you form an LLC, the registered agent will be the one who is doing all the paperwork for you. And the government will communicate with your registered agent, and the registered agent will communicate with the government on behalf of your business entity.
Depending on the state you form your LLC, you can find several registered agents. From what I learned, there are 3 significant states where non-US residents prefer to form their LLC. Nevada, Delaware, and Wyoming are the top 3 I found. They have no state income taxes for the businesses operating outside these states. That might be the reason most of the non-US residents love to form their LLCs in those states.
Forming an LLC will cost you money. It usually starts at $200. And to keep your LLC active, you should pay an annual fee. Again, this fee depends on the state you formed your LLC. I formed my LLC in the state of Wyoming, and I’ve told me that the annual fee is just $99. (Including the registered agent’s fee)
A US Address
When you are forming an LLC, you should make sure to establish a communication method. You need an address in the US. This address will be used to send you all the necessary documents to you. Even though you are not living in the US, you still can have access to virtual mailboxes for less than $10/month.
These virtual mailbox providers will scan the envelopes of the mails you received and upload them to secured shared cloud storage, where you can see the scanned items. If you need any particular enveloped to be opened, you can grant the mailbox provider to open it and send the scanned documents of the documents.
This way, you can make sure that you stay on top of all the legal documents, business-related documents being read by you. For less than $10 per month, it is a life-saver. Isn’t it?
NOTE: My registered agent provides the virtual mailbox facility for free. Therefore I never had to spend any money on virtual mailboxes. If you need a virtual mailbox, I recommend PhysicalAddress.com
A US Phone number
This is not a must. But, I recommend that you have a US phone number in place. It is not essentially beneficial when forming your LLC. But, it will come in handy once you have your EIN in place, and you are going to use your EIN to register an account in PayPal. This US number will be used to verify your ownership of your PayPal account (Also this will be used in Stripe verifications as well)

Forming a Wyoming LLC
Once all these are in place, you should reach out to your agent and seek their assistance in forming the LLC.
I registered my LLC in Wyoming, and my registered agent is Wyoming Trust & LLC Attorney. For the first year, they charged me $199 (All fees included), and when renewing the LLC, the total cost is $99.

If you are running a WordPress website, one of the biggest headaches you might have faced is updating your WordPress theme. In this simple guide, I will walk you through the process of the safest way to update your WordPress theme.
No matter what, if you are using a premium WordPress theme or a free WordPress theme, there will be updates. Based on the feedback (Bug fixes) or based on WordPress core updates, theme developers release updates for their themes.
Sometimes updates are solely for adding new functionality to the WordPress theme. That being said, whenever there’s an update, you should do the necessities.
When updating a WordPress theme of your live WordPress website, sometimes it may cause unavoidable issues. Sometimes even it may ultimately break your Website. It is a considerable risk.
Think that your site is getting a lot of daily visitors, and you are generating a reasonable amount of money from it. What if the site is not operational due to a failure occurred in the update of your theme? Sounds more like a nightmare, isn’t it?

When WordPress updates its core systems, all the theme should follow the newest updates. Or else, it will create lots of compatibility, functionality issues. All will negatively affect your site’s functionality.

No matter how good your theme is, still, there’s this thing called ‘Human Error.’. When coding a sophisticated and complicated theme, the code itself may create flaws, which can not be detected for a while. There are several ways to update a WordPress theme, and I’m here sharing the easiest (which I think) and the newbie-friendly method. Most WordPress users are updating themes via FTP.
Sometimes establishing an FTP connection might be a ‘tech work.’ If you are new to this, it is highly likely that you won’t get it for the first time.
I will walk you through the process of Updating your WordPress theme via cPanel.
1. Download the theme
The first thing you should do is download the updated theme from your vendor. I’m using the Rehub theme from Themeforest.
Don’t worry, if you purchase from your theme from somewhere else other than Themeforest, this is the only different step. All the other steps in this process will be the same. And I highly recommend you buy your theme or plugins from Themeforest as they are the best in the market.
Make sure to download the ‘Installable WordPress file only’ as shown in the image below.
2. Extract the downloaded theme
The theme will be downloaded as a Zipped file. You should extract the file, as shown in the image below. You can use WinRar to extract the zipped file. Or even you can use 7-Zip.
I recommend you use WinRar (For no reason, honestly. I’ve been using WinRar for more than 10 years now, and I love it
)

3. Rename the extracted folder and zip it again
It sounds a bit weird. But, yes, that is precisely what you should do.
One you extracted the theme, it should look like this
As the extracted theme folder named ‘rehub-theme,’ you should change it to a different name.
In this example, I will rename it to ‘new_rehub-theme.’
NOTE: The reason we should change the file name is, on your cPanel, there’s a folder named ‘rehub-theme’ as you already installed Rehub theme there. So, if we upload another folder with the same folder name, it will replace the files in the ‘rehub-theme’ folder on the cPanel. It is a risk, and to avoid such, we should make sure to change the name of the folder before uploading it to the cPanel.
IMPORTANT: When you are zipping the renamed theme folder, make sure to zip it as ‘Zip’ format. Don’t use the RAR format. To do that, you should right-click on the folder you want to zip, and on the dropdown menu, select ‘Add to archive.’ On the next window, select ‘Zip’ and hit ‘OK.’

4. Log into your cPanel and open File Manager
To log into your cPanel, first, you should log into your hosting account. I’m using Namecheap as my hosting provider. You may be using a different hosting provider. It doesn’t matter and just log into your hosting account and from there log into your cPanel

Once you logged into your cPanel, click on ‘File Manager’ and open it.
If you have trouble finding the file manager, use the search field, as shown in the image below.
5. Locate your WordPress installation folder and open wp-content folder
Once you open your file manager, you will see there are lots of files and folders.
Don’t get panic. If you have hosted multiple websites from the same hosting space, you will see even more files and folders.
In my hosting space, I have hosted several sites, and I see lots of files and folders, which is usual.
If your website’s URL is mydomain.com, you will see a folder named mydomain.com in the left-pane of your file manager.
In my case, I’m going to update the theme of Amigoreviews.com, and I located the folder named amigoreviews.com
See that is not hard!
Then click on the folder, and in the right pane, you will see the other folders/directories inside of the folder you just opened. (See below)
One your right pane, click on the wp-content folder
6. Locate and open the ‘themes’ folder in the wp-content folder
All your theme files are located in the theme folder, which can be found in the wp-content folder. Here’s how to locate your themes folder.
7. Uploading the theme to cPanel
Once you logged into your thems folder, you can see a folder named ‘rehub-theme’. This is why we had to change the name of the theme folder before uploading it.
Here’s how to upload your new copy of the theme to the themes folder.
First, click on the ‘Upload’ icon on the top left, and it will open a new window. There you will be able to browse and upload the theme.
Make sure you upload the ‘renamed’ theme in a zipped format.

Once the theme uploading completed, click on ‘Go back to….’ Link as shown in the below screenshot.
It will take you back to the themes folder, and you will find the uploaded theme in the zipped format in your themes folder.
8. Extracting the uploaded zipped theme file
Now you have to extract the theme content in the zipped theme to the themes folder. All you have to do is right-click on the zipped file and click on ‘Extract’.
9. Renaming the theme folders
Once the extraction completed, you will see a new folder named ‘new_rehub-theme’, alongside the folder ‘rehub-theme.’

Now we have to rename the themes.
First, we start with the currently active theme, which is ‘rehub-theme’.
Rename the ‘rehub-theme’ folder to ‘Old_rehub-theme’ and ‘new_rehub-theme’ to ‘rehub-theme’.
We are not deleting any file here. Just renaming the existing folders. This is important. If the newly uploaded theme is not working as expected, all we have to do is change the name of the ‘Old_rehub-theme’ into ‘rehub-theme’.

10. Check your website now
Once the renaming completed, go to your web browser and log into your website.
See if it is working as usual after the update.
If everything works fine, congratulations, you have successfully updated your WordPress theme.
Now you can delete ‘Old_rehub-theme’ and the Zipped file.
It will help you to keep your hosting space clean.
If you have a huge hosting space, you may keep the file.
But, it is recommended to delete the files as soon as you completed your updating process.
NOTE: Don’t think that this guide on The safest way to update a WordPress theme is only applicable when you are using a premium WordPress theme. Not true!
If you are using a free WordPress theme, you can follow the same steps and do the update. The only difference is you will have to download the theme from the WordPress theme directory.
And the rest of the steps are exactly as described in this guide.

There are several ways to update a WordPress theme safely. This guide on ‘The safest way to update a WordPress theme’ was prepared in keeping mind a newbie WordPress user. To make sure you are not breaking the code by updating your theme, you should make sure to keep a copy of your theme files, until you are sure that the update hasn’t broken your code. On this guide, it has clearly elaborated how to keep your ‘old theme’ files safe until you are sure that the update completed successfully. Sometimes Yes, updating a theme may create issues. But the truth is, before releasing an update the developers usually these the theme with numerous instances and they will only release the update when they are so sure on what they do. But, human error is something we can not take out from the equation, and anything could go wrong as nothing’s perfect. Let’s get to it. The process is simple and easy to follow
1. Download theme from Vendor
The first thing you should do is purchase the theme you like and download the theme from the Vendor. In this guide, I will be explaining the process of downloading a theme from Themeforest. If you have purchased your theme from a different vendor, then the process might be a little different. But it is easy to learn.
How to download a theme from Themeforest
Log into your Themeforest account and hover the mouse over your username. There will be a menu and click on ‘download.’
In the download page, you’ll find all your ThemeForest purchases (If you have purchased other plugins, themes, etc. Themeforest.
Find the theme you need to download (If you just purchased the theme, your download list will only have the theme you purchased) and click on the download button. Once you click, it will give you several options.
If you select ‘all files and documentation,’ it will download the theme and the associated files.
I personally see it is somewhat troublesome if you are new.
So, I recommend you click on the ‘Installable WordPress file only’ option.
Once you have downloaded the WordPress files, then you can start installing a premium theme on your WordPress.
2. Installing the Premium Theme on WordPress
Log in to your WordPress backend and hover the mouse over ‘Appearance’ and click on ‘Themes.’
It will take you to a new window.
This is where you can install a new theme for your WordPress.
The interface is almost self-explanatory!
First, click on ‘Add New,’ and in the next windows, click on ‘Upload Theme.’
Once you click on Upload Theme, you will be asked to browse or select the theme file you want to install.
Browse and locate the theme file you downloaded from Themeforest and select it and click on ‘Install Now.’
Once the installation completed, click on ‘Activate’ and congratulations, you just installed a Premium WordPress theme!
Once you activated the installed theme, it will be your active theme, and you can quickly see the new changes in your site as soon as you completed the activation.
3. How to find your Themeforest License Key
If you purchased your Theme from Themeforest, you should download your license key from ThemeForest and activate the theme. This way, you can get updates for your theme as they updated. And sometimes, finding the license key may be a difficult task. But it’s not.
All you have to do is, go to your ThemeForest download area and click on the green download button. In the dropdown, click on License Certificate and Purchase Code (either text or PDF) and download your license key.
Once you have your license key ready, you should enter your license key where it is requested.
