Update 07.03.19
Despite the recent wet and windy weather excellent progress has been made on all fronts at our Countess of Brecknock Hospice site. Indeed the pictures of this blogging visit may look sunny but the audible safety bleep system for high wind speed could be heard clearly on the crane, meaning it could not be operational.

Update 07.03.19
The joists are currently being fitted to the flat roof area. Joist caps are being used on the end of the timbers to protect the wood from moisture ingress and to make a good seal between the joist and the brickwork. When almost complete the building will be air pressure tested.

Update 10.01.19
Amiri Safety Advisor Jim Moss was on site during the Blogging visit. Jim works closely with the Blogging Team and has taught Ben and Chris a great deal over the last three years about safe construction methods and best practice on construction sites. Jim is also a qualified drone pilot and takes the fantastic aerial shots for Amiri. These pictures give a unique view of our sites for the construction teams and clients, and are also of great interest to the local community.

Update 10.01.19
Our Countess of Brecknock site is quite a complicated build as it connects to the existing building which is on a different level. The construction requires a large retaining wall which is already at an advanced stage. The retaining wall includes extensive drainage and moisture defence properties to ensure water cannot seep through to the new basement from the higher level.
One of the defences is the RIW Cavity Drain R20 membrane drainage system. The HDPE profiled sheet has 20mm raised turrets which channel any water ingress to a sump or collection point for safe disposal.

With groundwork’s continuing excess chalk is being removed by tractor and trailer. This allows for greater manoeuvrability and safety on a tight site with the public still accessing the hospital services.

Update 01.11.18
The site is quite striking on first viewing due to the colour of the soil. As with much of the Andover area it is chalk based, with approximately 265 to 365 meters of Upper Cretaceous Chalk underlying the district. This forms the extensive dip slopes and undulating ground seen throughout Andover. See the Technical Focus on chalk below for more information.
The chalk soil can actually help work at the early stages of the build. If it stays dry it can allow for cleaner lines in the foundation digging and the trench walls are also less prone to collapse. On the site the foundations to the lower level have commenced and the main split level retaining wall is well underway.
Demolition of the existing structure has started and the balcony will be removed over the coming week. Later in November work on the substructure block work and drainage will begin.

Update 01.11.18
On all Amiri sites the health and safety of our own workers and also the nearby community is of paramount importance. As we know construction work can be disruptive (particularly in the winter months), so all lorry deliveries at the Countess of Brecknock Hospice get the hosepipe treatment to wash the chalk and debris off the wheels before heading back into the surrounding community.

Update 01.11.18
Amiri are pleased to have been able to help the hospice move into temporary accommodation in an area of the main hospital complex. The large bright and tranquil space now has its own kitchen facilities and overlooks a lovely garden.
