Reading ”A Little Life” is like cutting yourself with a knife, unable to stop, and sort of liking it.

"Ten years ago, [A Little Life] was published, and my life changed. Not immediately: it had been unclear whether my editor, Gerry, would even buy it, and once he did and it was published, it was slow to find an audience. But then something happened that every author wishes for—it became a book that readers recommended to other readers. Over the years, I’ve been privileged enough to meet some of you. I always say that of all the gifts this book gave me, the best and most profound was that it allowed me to become friends with people I might never have encountered otherwise.

In late October, [Vintage Books] will publish a collector’s edition of ALL. The novel—with an afterword by and a Q&A with my friend [Neel Mukherjee]—has been divided into four books, which will be presented in a slipcase. I asked eight artists I admire to provide works for the slipcase and the books. For the slipcase, we asked the artists to imagine or depict a scene from the novel; [RF. Alvarez] painted the boys walking home to Lispenard Street from Pho Viet Huong; [Chantal Joffe], JB riding the subway; [Linus Borgo], Jude and Willem; and [Navot Miller], his version of Willem listening to Jude tell a story (there’s another of Navot’s paintings tucked inside the box). For the covers, [Salman Toor] imagined Jude; [Wangari Mathenge], Malcolm; Wardell Milan, JB; and [TM Davy], Willem. The only instructions these artists were given is that the work had to be figurative and in color…otherwise, it was up to them.

I hope you love this new edition as much as I do (don’t worry, the original “Orgasmic Man” edition isn’t going anywhere). It’s available for pre-order now wherever you buy books (US only.
