Flame Retardant Textiles
Fire retardant textiles are fabrics that are naturally slow to burn compared to other fireproof and chemically treated fabrics. Fabric can be called a fire-retardant textile as long as it is slow to burn as most fabrics burn, but some burn slower than others.
Tests for the speed at which the fabrics burn are conducted in laboratories. These methods are used to check the time required for the fabric to start burning under wood-fueled fire and flame throwers. Both natural and synthetic fibers are flame-retardant materials and they can effectively be added to each other to create different types of blends.
Fibers are treated with a chemical that minimizes the flame catching ability of the fabrics and makes them practically fireproof. The chemicals coated on the fiber react with the gases and tars produced by the fabric when there is a burn. This transforms gases and tars into an insulator and slows down the fabric’s burning speed. For different sectors, such as in the metal industry and professions like firefighters flame retardant materials are used because of their protective properties against fire.
Further applications of flame retardant textiles are in tents, health fabrics, drape, tarps, military applications, banners and signs. It’s very important to find a supplier of the best type of protective fabric and ensure a high-quality product to improve consumer safety. Products such as Twaron are used in fabrics such as for firefighters to withstand high temperatures in rough conditions. Products like aluminum hydroxide, which provide three types of protection, are commonly used as a fire retardant.
Flame retardation of a flame retardant fabric depends upon how often it has been washed and the fabric has been cleaned dry and the climate it is used in. It is possible to hire workers to professionally clean and maintain fire-retardant fabrics. Every fire-retardant textile has a specific requirement for laundering; the directions must be reviewed for the label on the clothing. While washing this fabric, bleach should be avoided as bleach could affect the fabric’s fire retardation.
