sueño spanish [dreams]
Our culture has, like many others, an informal set of beliefs about dreaming
• Some people don’t dream. Research has shown that everybody dreams, though some people don’t recall their dreams. (See nondreamers.)
• Some people dream only in black and white. Everyone dreams in color, although, unless we are specifically paying attention to colors, they may be deemphasized so that we think we dream in black and white.
Some dream folklore can be traced back for generations and tend to cross cultural boundaries. Such beliefs, passed down through time, eventually lose their original meaning and become mere habit. Some familiar dream beliefs are:
• You will dream of your future mate if you sleep with a piece of wedding cake under your pillow. This is a romantic bit of folklore that may have evolved from ancient times as wedding cake has featured prominently in nuptial feasts for centuries. It is a symbol of fertility and good luck.
• Placing a knife under the foot of the bed will ward off nightmares. Such a notion could be tied to the original definition of nightmares, which were said to be menacing female spirits who attacked victims in their sleep. Tradition held that witches and evil spirits are easily discouraged by steel; hence, a knife under your bed will protect you from nightmares.
Other dream beliefs actually have some basis in empirical observation. It has been said, for example, that eating spicy food before going to bed induces nightmares. This is untrue, although if the food induces indigestion, it may disturb sleep.

Science of dreams
As human beings, we build elaborate sand castles, play games, sunbath and even spending time skimming the water with pebbles. The beach has a spiritual meaning to us all. Gazing out to sea in a dream can indicate that you need to focus on the things you like to do in life. A deserted beach in a dream signifies that if you take some time to do something for yourself, such as taking a vacation for a couple of days. This will provide an opportunity for you to reflect on what is important in your life. It will help you understand what is required in order to provide yourself with enough time to make sure you can distance yourself from stressful circumstances, which you have been worrying about too much lately. Spiritually beaches remind us of calmness and peace. This dream has both negative and positive meanings attached, depending on the details of the dream. The beach you see in a dream could be sand, but occasionally cobblers or even boulders. There is nothing better, in my view than dreaming about a lovely white sandy beach. It is a positive dream. In order to understand what the dream means Just make sure you remember all the details that appeared in connection with the beach.
What is the definition of a beach in a dream?
A beach in a dream can be associated with a new mindset. After all, the beach is where the sea meets land. In fact, the beach spiritually is about connecting us to a point in time. There is little that says in life “this is a beach” we only know "land" and "water." This is of course, if we take the geographical terms and define it. Humans can define geographically into two categories - water or land. So does a “beach” really have a definition? This is interesting because if you did have a dream of the beach this is worth thinking this through. It is our culture or beliefs that name things rocks, beaches, cliffs. In essence, they can all be defined as being on “land.” Seeking the true meaning of the beach dream (to you) is focused on what you believe and how you felt in the dream.
What is the detailed dream interpretation of a beach?
If you dream of a natural (not manmade) beach, it signifies you may soon take a holiday. This holiday will enable you to fulfill your needs and goals, whether by helping you reduce stress, lose weight, or just enjoy some luxurious pampering. If you are scuba diving during your visit to the beach, there are relaxing and adventurous times ahead. If the beach in your dream shows a dense forest and mountain range, this can suggest that you are searching for something attainable. However, this also shows you may encounter difficulties. You will not be affected by these obstacles as long as you are able to keep your goals steady and attainable. If you are happy and content on the beach in your dream, this is an indication that an important trip is on the cards.
This is because dreams are a way of your subconscious mind to communicate with your conscious mind.
Therefore, when things, in reality, do not go as planned, your subconscious mind tries to play them the way you would have wanted them to go, in your dreams.
You are what you dream.
Need to sleep on that big decision? Your dreams might influence your final choice, suggests new research.
Scientists disagree as to what extent dreams reflect subconscious desires, but new research reported in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Vol. 96, No. 2) concludes that dreams do influence people's decisions and attitudes.
Social psychologists Carey Morewedge, PhD, at Carnegie Mellon University, and Michael Norton, PhD, at Harvard University, conducted studies to find out how people respond to their dreams. Their study of people in the United States, South Korea and India found that 56 percent, 65 percent and 74 percent of respondents, respectively, believe that dreaming reveals hidden truths.
The researchers then wanted to know whether dreams could influence people's decision-making. They asked 182 Boston commuters to consider which of four scenarios would most likely change their flight plans: the government raising the national threat level; consciously imagining a plane crash; learning an actual flight crashed along your route; or dreaming about a plane crash. Commuters said the dream would be just as unsettling as a real crash and more unsettling than consciously imagining a crash or a government warning.
People also seem to selectively find meaning in their dreams based on their biases, Morewedge says. In another study, the researchers asked people of assorted religious beliefs to imagine that God spoke to them in a dream and told them either to travel the world or go work in a leper colony. The very faithful said that either dream would be meaningful to them, while the more agnostic said the travel commandment might be somewhat meaningful, but not the leper colony commandment.
These experiments gauge people's attitudes, not their behaviors, but Morewedge thinks one follows the other. In a different study, he found that 68 percent of people believe their dreams can predict the future. If they believe that, and they have a dream that weighs heavily on
Mechanics of Dreaming
While you are dreaming, your body undergoes noticeable changes. Your adrenaline rises, your blood pressure increases, and you heart beats faster. Given this hyperactivity, it should be no surprise how someone with a weak heart can die in their sleep. Their heart may not be able to withstand the strain and the erratic changes that their body is going through.
Dreaming takes place during REM, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement. It is thus called, because your eyes move rapidly back and forth under the eyelids. REM sleep takes place in the fourth stage of sleep and accounts for 15-20% of your sleep time. From the point you fall asleep, it takes 30 to 90 minutes before you start dreaming. You cycle through the 4 stages of sleep and may enter the REM stage 4 to 7 times in one night. During REM, your blood pressure and heart rate fluctuate and increase. It sounds like your body is going through a lot, but in fact, it is quite the contrary. During REM, your bodies are completely immobile and your muscles remain completely relaxed. You may shift in your bed throughout the night, but when in REM, you are completely still. This is commonly known as "REM Paralysis".
In REM sleep, the mind is as active as it is during waking. However, chemically it is different. REM is controlled by the excitability level of the cholinergic neurons. Noradrenaline and seratonin are missing in the brain when in the dream state. These chemicals allow the brain to carry out task, solve problems and remember things. This is a reason why you find it so hard to remember your dreams.

Seven planetary aspects or Classical planets
The sun, the moon, mercury Venus mars, jupiter and Saturn.
Alchemists associated these all with a metal and attributes or deities.
The planets are named after Roman gods.
In 2500 B.C.E., a man named Sarus Ignus believed that the seven planetary aspects were capable of helping him find Panacea. Panacea is an elixir that was said to cure all illnesses and prolong life, however this wasn't the Elixir of Life, but rather a connection to the Elixir of Life and the Philosopher's Stone. However, there has been no evidence proving the planetary aspects have anything to do with Panacea. There have been several witches and wizards who believed Ignus was just spouting lies. A well-known alchemist during the mid-1700’s named Tyrus Smith wrote a thesis about how Sarus Ignus never had any factual evidence supporting his ideas. This thesis was known as the Theory of Innovations. The story often dictated that Panacea was unreachable or that it simply didn't exist.
he picture to the right. Notice how each aspect has a line connecting them to another celestial body (with the exception of the sun)? That is what we call a transitional. A transitional, also known as medio, is when the characteristics of one celestial body transfers to another. The transitional phase is split up into two parts: aditus and barathri. Aditus means "the beginning" and is obviously the beginning of the transitional phase. Aditus lasts through pretty much the whole transitional; from the start of the transitional phase until the end of the phase. If you are transmuting metals, the aditus portion of the transitional phase includes the beginning of the transmutation through the actual process of transmuting the metal. Barathri means "the abyss" and this happens when the metal has gone through the full transformation and the characteristics have officially transferred over.
How long do these transitional phases take? Each individual transition has a certain amount of time it takes to complete the transmutation. This allotted amount of time is called the Transitional Period (TP). The Transitional Period can range anywhere from one day to thirty-one days, though there is one known to be infinite!
The chart below details each celestial body, what element and characteristic they're associated with, and which celestial body it transitions to. Remember when you write the chart down that even though we are talking about planets, the elements themselves are the ones that are being transmuted.

When spells are used to transmute the proper elements, the characteristics of each will change. For example, we can use iron and silver. Both elements correlate to the proper planet: iron goes with Mars and silver goes with Venus. Notice how Mars and Venus transition to each other. When using spells on iron, we can transfer the characteristics of silver into the iron and vice versa.
On to the actual transitions themselves! Let's kick things off with Venus and Mars. The picture below is a quick overview of the transitional phases between the two.

Ancient runes- Freyas aett [plural. Aettir]
meanings of these first eight runes were essential components of life for the Nordic people and are symbolic of nurturing and concerned with concrete matters of daily life. are particularly helpful as supporting and assisting forces, which can be added to spells to enhance or otherwise assist their effects.
FEHU
Cattle, wealth Owning cattle and gold were ways to raise yourself through the ranks of tribal society
The richness and gain of spirituality and happiness
Schreiber’s corrections, Fehu stands for fortune in both the material and immaterial sense of the word.
Merkstave, Fehu represents the opposite: loss [both personally and materially] as well as the negative forces that come with wealth: greed and poverty.
Magical use of FEHU
can use Fehu in a practical aspect to stabilize our magic and reduce the chances of backfire and side effects.
For added protection
do not make the mistake of trying to find a loophole to Gamp’s Principle Exception of Wealth with this rune.
URUZ
Aurochs [horned cattle], water
Bravery, strength
Schreiber noted the pictographic translation to be that of a Graphorn, which is incidentally the symbol for the number two in arithmancy.
Merkstave, Uruz speaks of slowness, dullness, and potentially even cowardice depending on how it is combined with other runes.
Magical uses of Uruz
can be used to bolster and enhance the effects of a spell, though precautions must be taken as side effects can also be juiced up. For this reason it is not uncommon to find Fehu and Uruz inscribed together.
I feel it’s important to note while it’s still early in your magical career that you should be very careful with the kind of magic you are doing. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and every spell has some consequence, whether you are aware of it or not. This is the Law of Unintended Consequences, and it states that every action has some unintended or unforeseen reaction that may be positive (i.e. luck, goodwill), negative (backfire, unnecessary harm), or neutral (the benefits and negatives cancel each other out). It is vital to keep this in mind with all of your spellwork but with runes especially; you will come across examples and texts throughout your time in this course where misuse of runes has resulted in some very unfortunate circumstances, and you would be wise to learn all you can to avoid following in those footsteps.
THURISAZ
Giants jotun
Thor, god
magical use of Thurisaz is associated with change, constructive conflict, and defense.
To strengthen offensive spells
Strong defense
Schreiber’s corrections tell us that the standard form of this rune is used to denote the giant race, and it has been used in this sense on maps to mark the territories of giants. This use eventually became so common that the rune assumed the more general meaning of danger as well.
Merkstave, Thurisaz represents unbridled destruction and danger, as well as unresolved conflict. Thurisaz is most commonly used in its merkstave form to bolster defensive spells and decrease destruction caused by offensive spellwork. As noted in your textbook, this requires a great deal of skill and concentration as the defensive spellcaster must keep both the spell and the rune in mind while building the defenses.
ANSUZ
Aesir God or gods
Spiritual magical
Higher power
Merkstave, Ansuz speaks to delusion and misunderstanding, and it may be used in conjunction with memory and befuddlement charms to increase their effectiveness. However, when used on Muggles, Ansuz can cause the spell to overpower the mind and leave the recipient generally incapable of higher cognitive functioning. It was declared illegal by the Ministry of Magic in 1939
Magical use of Ansuz
divinatory tools and spell craft. It may also increase the effects of communicative devices
RAIDO
To ride
Journey
Raido is significant in the use of magical transportation, and the original portkeys were in fact small rune stones inscribed with Raido that allowed witches and wizards to travel from one village to the next. Raido does not just represent physical journeys, but also spiritual and life journeys.
Upright, it may indicate positive changes while merkstave may represent chaos or stagnancy. As with all runes, read Raido in context with other runes to understand the precise meaning.
Raido’s magical effect is most notable in transportation spells, as it helps to stabilise them. It can, for example, reduce the effect of Portkey-sickness if inscribed onto the Portkey before activation. Unfortunately however, there is no evidence to suggest that Raido reduces the risk of splinching while Apparating.
Kenaz

Standard Merkstave Variant
Schreiber follows the Muggle interpretation for Kenaz, which is disease, and extends it to also include magical maladies. There is some speculation in the divinatory aspects, however, that may suggest a more accurate reading is “torch” (we will talk more about this particular rune and its divergent meanings next year), but when it comes to using Kenaz in spellwork, the primary effects noticed are in relation to health and disease.
Like Thurisaz, Kenaz is used mostly in its merkstave (rightward-facing) form to promote vigour, health, illumination, and creativity. Used upright (or leftward-facing) in its standard form, Kenaz associates itself with weakness, ill health (often mentally), and confusion.

Kenaz lends itself to potion creation more so than wand work. For hundreds of years, potioneers have carved the rune into cauldrons and phials, and even St. Mungo’s has Kenaz placed around the wards to promote health. It has been suggested that the late Potions Master, Severus Snape, used Kenaz to enhance the efficacy of several of his signature potions. Certainly for anyone desiring to become a healer, this rune may be of great use when performing your duties. (In the picture to the right, we see Kenaz upright, which suggests the brewer had ill-intent.)
Gebo

Gebo, as the Muggles understand it, means “gift.” Sophia Schreiber opted to leave interpretation of this rune open, as little is known or understood about Gebo. “Gift” is possibly an all-inclusive word for theorized interpretations such as sacrifice, companionship, and generosity; those are generally the accepted understandings.
Merkstave, Gebo may represent the dark side of these qualities: greed, loneliness, and selfishness. In an effort to make our lives more difficult as translators, upright and merkstave Gebo look exactly the same, and translating this rune correctly requires a great amount of context.
Using Gebo in spellwork is not recommended. Runologists are still arguing over the practical aspects of this rune and nobody is quite sure of the effect it has. In my own research, I suspect it was used in spellwork during times of perfect planetary alignment, possibly with human sacrifice to seal the work. Since all of these forces are incredibly powerful, these were spells most likely meant to bring destruction to rival civilizations or influence the course of history within a kingdom. As such, you should never use Gebo in your work, lest some undesired consequences result.
Wunjo

Upright Merkstave Variant
Schreiber and the Muggles both agree on the basic interpretation of Wunjo: joy. This rune deals specifically with emotional states, and healers at St. Mungo’s often place Wunjo in wards with mentally unstable patients to bring calm, happiness, fellowship, and clarity.
Merkstave, Wunjo represents the opposite: sorrow, anger, delirium, and debilitating mania. Wunjo works to enhance any spell that requires emotion to function, such as the Patronus Charm (which requires happy memories).
There have been several instances throughout history of Wunjo being used, both positively and negatively. It is said that the former Headmaster Albus Dumbledore placed the upright Wunjo around his office, causing a sense of calm and happiness to overtake those who entered. On the other end, Morgan le Fay, the infamous witch of the Middle Ages, is rumored to have used the merkstave Wunjo to depress those around her, ensuring her total power during her reign. From the tale of a rebellion mounted against her, we can learn that upright Wunjo can effectively cancel out merkstave Wunjo, allowing whole peoples and areas to immediately begin to feel like themselves.
Conclusion
We have yet again come to the end of another lesson. Remember that your midterm will be held after the lesson next week. You will have time to study, and it will be open note. Next week we will cover runes 13-18, which you will also be tested on in a separate quiz. Before I see you next week, take a look at Chapter Four: Heimdall’s aett. For today, you have a quiz on the runes we studied as well as the vocabulary covered in this lesson.

The oracles left behind by Fortuna mentioned the coming of a great adnuntiatrix [prophetess] by Palestrina, where the sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia had residence.
The prophecy was fufilled upon Amitys' birth, to every detail. And there was no doubt that the Fox family was immortalized by sharing a bloodline with the goddess.
The Prophetic script.
Only a few members of the Fox' family had laid eyes upon the oracle that predicted the Crown princesses birth.
Far off in the future, a Crown princess would be born into the Fox family, with remarkable powers of foresight.
In Fall, by dawn
a baby princess shall be borned
in times quite modern,
far from now.
Her birth will take place in Rome,
by a hospital of the times,
with much care taken in her delivery,
She will be crowned upon her birth as the adnuntiatrix,
becoming the benefactor
of the Fox family estate and affairs.
Her education will be rigorously academic,
beginning at the age of 4 years old.
She will learn of secret wisdoms
and spirituality; becoming a higher priestess in her adolescence.
Her visionary will take a pilgrimage
that goddess Fortuna
made to a secret retreat,
on the right bank of Tiber below Rome. There her passing will be made down the stream by land.
This happening occurs exactly upon June the 10th, the day of worship dedication to Goddess Fortuna.
However, when the princess takes her pilgrimage
much of Goddess Fortunas memory will be begotten by the times.
The future will be a very different place in time;
and the princess shall pass in grace and elegance with her traditional faith.

Fors Fortuna
Pilgrimage
the right bank of the Tiber, below Rome
the pilgrimage was made down the stream by land and water on the anniversary of its foundation.
June 26th
Fortuna had many temples in Rome, aswell as important cult centres in
Antium [Anzio] and Praeneste.
Primigenia Fortuna means first mother.
The name Fortuna finds its roots in the Latin Fero meaning to bring, win, recieve or get.
Fortuna had a very old temple on a hill between the Forum Romanum and the Forum Boarim, near to the temple of Mater Matuta. Dedication day here was June 10th.
As a goddess of fate, Fortuna naturally had the power to foretell the future.
Fortuna Primingenia in Praeneste had an oracle in which tablets inscribed with messages were chosen from a jar.

goddess of good luck, worshipped from remote antiquity in Italy. Her worship was supposed to have been introduced into Rome by king Servius. Tullius, popularly believed to be her favourite and confidant. He was said to have founded her oldest sanctuaries, as, for instance, that of Fors Fortuna, or lucky chance, on the right bank of the Tiber below Rome. To this a pilgrimage was made down the stream by land and water on the anniversary of its foundation (June 26). As time went on, the worship of Fortuna became one of the most popular in Italy. She was worshipped at a great number of shrines under various titles, given according to various circumstances of life in which her influence was supposed to have effect. These titles were Fortuna Primigenia, who determines the destiny of the child at its birth; Fortuna Publica or Populi Romani, the tutelary goddess of the state; Fortuna Coesaris or Augusta, the protectress of the emperor; Fortuna privata, or of family life; Fortuna patricia, plebeia, equestris, of the different orders, classes, and families of the population; Fortuna liberum, of children; virginalis, of maidens, muliebris, of women; Fortuna virilis was the goddess of woman's happiness in married life, of boys and of youths, who dedicated to her the first cuttings of their beards, calling her from this Fortuna barbata. Other epithets of Fortuna were victrix, or giver of victory; dux or comes, the leader or attendant; redux, who brings safe home; tranquilla, the giver of prosperous voyages. This Fortuna was worshipped with Portunus in the harbour of Rome. There were also Fortuna bona and mala, good and evil Fortune; blanda or flattering, obsequens or yielding, dubia or doubtful, viscata or enticing, brevis or fickle, and manens or constant. Trajan at last founded a special temple in her honour as the all-pervading power of the world. Here an annual sacrifice was offered to her on New Year's Day. In works of art she was represented with the same attributes as the Greek Tyche (see TYCHE).
